PHASE PAGES, Regular Season 2002-03
A new, exciting European club competition started with the 2002-03 ULEB Cup regular season. All 24 teams were drawn into 4 groups. Only the best 4 teams in each group would make it to the eighthfinals. Gravelines dominated Group A with a 7-3 record, beating the expectations against DKV Joventut, Ural Great and Snaidero Udine. In Group B, FMP Zeleznik posted the best regular season record in the entire competition, 9-1. Pamesa, Euro Roseto and Pivovarna Lasko also advanced in this group. Krka Novo Mesto won Group C with a 7-3 record, beating Estudiantes on points differential. RheinEnergie and Trieste also made it to the next round. In Group D, Metis Varese finished first by winning a three-way tie against Caprabo Lleida and Spirou Basket. Zadar also reached the next round. Chris Anstey of Ural Great was the 2002-03 regular season top scorer (21.4 ppg.). Zelly Wesson led this phase in rebounds (12.7 rpg.) while Scooter Barry of Cholet Basket was first in assists (5.3 apg.).

Ognjen Askrabic - FMP
The ULEB Cup debuted with Krka Novo Mesto defeating Darussafaka in Istanbul 76-89 in the very first game. The ULEB Cup’s inaugural night also saw the very first overtime game with Fuenlabrada outlasting Snaidero Udine 90-83. Other big winners on opening night were DKV Joventut, Gravelines Dunkerque, FMP Zeleznik, Pamesa Valencia and Metis Varese, who all started the regular season with convincing victories. MORE

Roger Huggins - Spirou Basket
Only six teams were 2-0 after Game 2. In Group B, Pamesa Valencia stayed perfect defeating Pivovarna Lasko 78-83, and FMP Zeleznika did as well with a 72-82 victory at Roseto. In Group C, Krka improved to 2-0 beating Adecco Estudiantes 92-74, and RheinEnergie Cologne blew out Darussafaka 98-60. The survivors in Group D are Zadar, which won 73-71 over Varese, and Charleroi, which escaped Lleida with a 72-76 decision. MORE

AJ Bramlett - Caprabo Lleida
Only three teams reached 3-0: Pamesa Valencia in Group C won its head-to-head showdown with FMP Zeleznik, 85-61; Krka Novo Mesto recorded an impressive 70-87 triumph at Trieste in Group C; and Zadar is the sole leader in Group D after escaping at the last second 91-90 over Cholet. And in a double-overtime thriller, Adecco Estudiates finally outlasted Darussafaka 95-102 in Istanbul. MORE

Euro Roseto
Home court advantage was a big factor in Week 4 as 9 of the 12 home teams claimed victory. Krka joined Pamesa as the only 4-0 teams after knocking RheinEnergie from the ranks of the undefeated with an 85-75 win. Darussafaka won its first, 84-79 over Elan Chalon, while Adecco Estudiantes broke records in downing Trieste 121-76. Zeleznik also drummed Oostende 92-52. MORE

Halfway through the regular season, Pamesa stood alone as the only 5-0 team after rolling over Oostende 80-108 in Group B. Gravelines beat visiting DKV Joventut 88-82 to take over first place in Group A. Elan Chalon knocked off previously undefeated Krka in overtime, 102-99, which allowed RheinEnergie to tie for first place in Group C with a 79-74 victory against Adecco Estudiantes. In Group D, Varese claimed first by beating Amsterdam 69-79. MORE

Thompson - Udine
Gravelines and Snaidero Udine stood atop Group A at 4-2 after Telekom Bonn beat Gravelines 84-80 and Udine beat Fuenlabrada 93-64. In Group B, FMP Zeleznik tied Pamesa at 5-1 with a 59-68 win at Opel Skyliners and with Pamesa losing for the first time. In Group C, Krka slipped by Darussafaka 79-76, while co-leader RheinEnergie beat Trieste 84-80. Zadar beat Ricoh Astronauts 90-80 and Capbrabo Lleida downed Metis Varese 82-78 to co-lead Group D. Jones - Darussafaka
The first teams to make the elimination rounds 16 were both from Group B as FMP Zeleznik squeezed in with a 78-76 win over Roseto and Pamesa Valencia smashed Pivovarna Lasko 93-74. Group C could have had two qualifiers, but the co-leaders lost: Krka, 88-79 to Adecco Estudiantes, and RheinEnergie, 89-66 to Darussafaka. In Group D, Metis Varese beat KK Zadar 88-86 in overtime to grab first place, while in Group A Gravelines is first after downing Snaidero Udine 91-83. MORE

In Group A, Gravelines booked its ticket to the eighthfinals with an 87-94 win at Ural Great. Snaidero Udine also moved on with a 92-78 thrashing of Telekom Bonn. Three teams advanced from Group C. Krka Novo Mesto did so by stomping Trieste 101-83, which helped RheinEnergie survive to the next round despite a 91-85 loss at Elan Chalon. And Adecco Estudiantes squeezed in with a 105-79 blowout of Darussafaka. MORE

Five more teams joined the parade to the second round, leaving four berths up for grabs in the final week of play. In Group A, DKV Joventut advanced by beating Udine 84-90 in overtime. Group B also had a new qualifier, Pivovarna Lasko, following its 79-77 win over Roseto. In Group D, Zadar qualified with an 81-79 win over Capprabo Lleida and Charleroi did by winning 66-77 at Ricoh Astronauts. Varese moved on despite losing 85-74 at Cholet. MORE

Maric, Trieste advance
Roseto, Caprabo Lleida, Trieste and Ural Great became the final second-round qualifiers. In two showdowns for the right to advance, Roseto beat Opel Skyliners 84-79 in Group B and Lleida downed Cholet 99-84 in Group D. In Group C, Trieste won 73-86 at Darussafaka to advance in a tiebreaker with Elan Chalon, a 75-71 loser at Krka Novo Mesto. Ural Great moved on with a 86-61 win over Snaidero Udine. MORE
