PHASE PAGES, Eighthfinals 2002-03
Eight countries were represented among the 16 teams that reached the first eliminatory round of two-game series, each team playing a home game and the aggregate score after the second deciding the winner. Two of those matchups were pairs of teams from the same countries: Udine and Varese of Italy in one, Lasko and Novo Mesto of Slovenia in the other. In a bit of foreshadowing of what would happen later in the spring, the only two teams to sweep their series 2-0 were Krka Novo Mesto and Pamesa Valencia. Second-game winners who advanced in comeback fashion were Lleida, Estudiantes and Varese. Losing on the road in their second games, but with margins to spare from the first, were Zadar, FMP and Joventut. The results set up the following quarterfinal pairings: Joventut-Zeleznik, Lleida-Novo Mesto, Valencia-Zadar and Estudiantes-Varese.
Eighthfinals, Game 1
Eight teams are halfway to the quarterfinals after winning the first legs in their two-game second-round series. Zadar picked up a 94-71 home victory over Gravelines, and the regular season's top team, FMP Zeleznik, won 73-91 at Trieste. Spirou Charleroi beat visiting DKV Joventut 64-56, Roseto topped Adecco Estudiantes 80-72, Snaidero Udine dropped Metis Varese 83-77 and Ural Great downed Caprabo Lleida 84-79. The two other road winners were Pamesa Valencia, 72-76 at RheinEnergie Cologne and Krka Novo Mesto, 78-79 at Pivovarna Lasko.

Eighthfinals, Game 2
Eight proud teams marched into the quarterfinals. DKV Joventut got there by downing Charleroi 73-57 to make up for an 8-point loss in their first game. FMP Zeleznik advanced despite an 81-86 home loss to Trieste because of the 18-point edge it held from their first game. Caprabo Lleida downed Ural Great 86-69 to eclipse the 5-point loss it suffered in their previous game. Krka Novo Mesto prevailed 76-69 over Pivovarna Lasko to sweep their series. Pamesa Valencia won its second game against RheinEnergie 93-84. Zadar lost 78-64 at Gravelines, but advanced after a 23-point win in the first leg. Adecco Estudiantes turned back Roseto 84-68 to erase an earlier loss. And Metis Varese’s 73-59 win over Snaidero Udine made the difference in their series.
