Perennial Montenegrin champion Buducnost VOLI Podgorica returns to 7DAYS EuroCup for the ninth time in 10 years looking to restore some of its glory after a season that was below this ambitious club’s expectations. Last fall, Buducnost did not advance out of its regular season group for the second consecutive season. Grouped with very strong competition – eventual champion Unicaja Malaga, plus two of last year’s quarterfinalists, FC Bayern Munich and Zenit St. Petersburg – Buducnost struggled from the start. The midseason arrival of the former EuroCup Coach of the Year Ilias Zouros did not change things much. But the team never stopped fighting. Even though it was eliminated with two games to go, it took first-place Zenit down to the wire only for Stefan Markovic to hit a buzzer-beater that sent Buducnost to another defeat, and eventually a winless EuroCup campaign. At home, however, Buducnost was its usual self. It showed a brave effort in the Adriatic League semifinals and took eventual champion Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade to a deciding Game 3, while securing both trophies in Montenegro. It conquered the Cup with a win over rival Mornar Bar, and then captured its 11th Montenegrin League title in as many years with a 3-2 best-of-five series win over the same opponent.

History

Founded in 1949, it took four decades for Buducnost to cement its place in the first division of the Yugoslav League. By the end of the century, however, it was the team to beat. After Yugoslav Cup titles in 1996 and 1998, Dejan Tomasevic, Milenko Topic and Vlado Scepanovic helped Buducnost to a record-setting domestic winning streak of 51 games and three straight Yugoslav League titles from 1999 through 2001. Another Cup triumph made for a double in 2001 and Buducnost proved to be a force in the 2000-01 EuroLeague by reaching the playoffs. The club returned to the EuroLeague for the next two years, but failed to reach the Top 16. A quieter period followed before Buducnost became the new team to beat in the newborn Montenegrin League. The club has won every league title from the inaugural 2006-07 campaign, while also leaving its mark in the EuroCup. Buducnost reached the EuroCup quarterfinals twice - in 2012 and 2013 – and was ousted only by Valencia Basket and eventual champ Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar, respectively. At home, Buducnost won the Montenegrin double for six straight years, from 2007 to 2012. It won the seventh of 11 consecutive league crowns in 2013, and a year later started another string of Montenegrin doubles, but also a string of three consecutive Adriatic League semifinal appearances. In 2014-15, the team advanced through the EuroCup regular season and into the Last 32 and also lost a decisive fifth game of the Adriatic League semifinal series against Cedevita Zagreb. However the team bounced back by winning the Montenegrin League against Sutjeska and the Cup by routing Zeta. In 2015-16, Buducnost won the Adriatic League regular season, but failed to reach its first ever finals after getting swept in the best-of-three playoff semifinals against Mega Leks, and last season it was eventual champ Crvena Zvezda that got better of Buducnost in the semifinals. In Montenegro, however, the club continued its dominance. Buducnost captured its third and fourth consecutive double, beating Mornar Bar in each Cup and League final over the past two seasons. Now, with a new coach pacing on the sidelines and new youngsters emerging from its remarkable pool of talents, Buducnost has the foundation to build on for the challenges it is facing this season.
