Six seasons for the memories
In just six seasons, the ULEB Cup captured the imagination of players and fans throughout Europe and beyond, almost as though it had been producing thrillers forever. Europe's second-highest competition behind only the Euroleague was a source of great motivation to all who played a part of it. The list of participating clubs and players included former Euroleague champions as well as reigning World, Olympic and European champion players. And for those who aspired to be among the next generation of great clubs and players, the ULEB Cup became the perfect stage on which to prove themselves. The 2007-08 season saw 54 clubs from 25 countries take part in the ULEB Cup. On any given Tuesday night in fall and winter, ULEB Cup action could be followed in up to 10 national capitals among 27 European cities stretching from middle Russia to the Canary Islands, or from Jerusalem to southern England. In those places and many more, competitiveness was the standard, love of basketball the sentiment that united all ULEB Cup participants!
2008 - Joventut takes title at Final Eight!
The ULEB Cup's sixth and final champion was none other than DKV Joventut! With a defensive masterpiece that will go down in the record books, Joventut buried Akasvayu Girona 54-79 before an animated crowd of 4,500 at Palavela Arena in Turin, Italy on April 13, 2008. Akasvayu blasted ahead 12-2 to start the game, but Joventut roared back behind big men Jan-Hendrick Jagla, Petar Popovic and Jerome Moiso to lead 27-34 at halftime. Joventut's defense was phenomenal in the middle quarters, limiting Akasvayu to 16 points in 20 minutes. Demond Mallet paced the winners with 26 points, while Rudy Fernandez, who didn't start due to a shoulder injury, had 13, 6 rebounds and 3 steals off the bench and was named MVP. Ivan Radenovic led Akasvayu with 20 points. With the victory, Joventut earned a place in the Euroleague for the 2008-09 season, the 15th anniversary of its title in Europe's top club comeptition.
