The Take

In an all-Russian clash, unbeaten Zenit St. Petersburg (5-0) plays at home against Avtodor Saratov (3-2) . The visitors have the most productive offense in the competition, averaging 90.8 points per game, but have not had success against Zenit this season. The two teams have played each other twice already this year. In their Eurocup opener, Zenit won on the road 85-90, and Zenit also won a VTB League clash in St. Petersburg earlier this month, 90-74. A win combined by losses to both Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius and Szolnoki Olaj would secure Zenit a place in the Last 32. The Hungarian champ Szolnoki Olaj (1-4) welcomes PAOK Thessaloniki (2-3) in what feels as a must-win game for both sides. PAOK hopes to keep its perfect 7-0 record against Hungarian teams intact, while is looking to build on its last week's win over Avtodor, when the team held Eurocup's highest scoring offense bellow 80 points. Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul (3-2) is at home against Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (1-4), looking for a win that would trace its path towards the Last 32. These two teams played each other five teams in the past decade, and it was the road team that has won four of those contests, including each of the last three. Besiktas won in the Lithuanian capital 87-91 to start this campaign.

Quotes Head Coaches

POR, PETER
Szolnoki Olaj
"We would love to continue from where we left off against Saratov, on that game we played well, the players were focused and helped each other the way I wanted them. We aim for the win, nothing else, so we could keep our qualyfying hopes alive. PAOK changed a lot since our first meeting, they have now Sofoklis Schortsanitis at center, we have to be aware of that."
MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"Szolnoki won a very important game, they have made significant changes and this game may definitely be much different than that of our original encounter. Both teams have changed a lot anyway. Szolnoki is much stronger than at the beginning of the season, they are still a team that tries to press all over and run on open court so as to achieve fast breaks and easy baskets. It's going to be a very important game in terms of qualification, but all games are going to be very important from now on anyway. We need to maintain our concentration, not allow mistakes that are going allow our opponent score easy baskets and try to exploit on our strong points in the game."

Players

BORISOV, MILOS
Szolnoki Olaj
"Nothing else than a win would satisfy us against PAOK. The team has responded positively for the change as Peter Por stepped in for Dragan Aleksic, we are on the right track. We got to stick to what are good at, but has to adopt to PAOK's play a bit as they got stronger under the basket."
LIAPIS, MICHAIL
PAOK Thessaloniki
"We have a very tough game ahead, against a very good team that gave us a hard time in the first game. We need to remain focused in our game, play good defense; this is the most important part of the game and make the right decisions in offense. We need to stick with our game plan and then all will depend on us. We have better psychology now, we have left bad performances and losing streaks behind, the team has had a series of good results and we need to continue this way. We know our mission is going to be tough, Szolnoki will continue fighting to qualify following its win over Saratov, and maybe this game is their last chance. I think that we can win if we remain focused and serious."

Szolnoki Olaj storms back from 19-point deficit to beat PAOK

Szolnoki Olaj picked up its second win of the season after coming back from 19 down to beat PAOK Thessaloniki 76-69 on Wednesday in Group E. Both teams have now 2-4 records, but Szolonki claimed the potential tiebreak advantage between them. A 6-25 run bridging halftime gave a 26-45 advantage to PAOK at the midway point of the third quarter, but Szolnoki did not give up and with a furious comeback in the last quarter took a 65-64 lead and never looked back, scoring 37 points in the last 10 minutes. David Vojvoda led the way for the winners by scoring 13 of his 15 points in the last quarter, Strahinja Milosevic added 13, Krisztian Wittmann 12 and Peter Kovacs posted 10 with 7 rebounds. Kostas Vasileiadis had 11 points for PAOK, while Apollon Tsochlas and William Hatcher bagged 10 each in defeat.

Wittmann scored twice from long distance to take a 17-9 advantage for Szolnoki late in the first quarter. Uros Duvnjak fixed the score at 17-11 at the first break. Michalis Liapis put PAOK in front 17-18. The lead changed hands four times, but when Tsochlas hit from three-point range for a 22-24 PAOK lead, he also started a 2-12 run to complete the quarter and establish a 24-36 halftime lead.

Vasileaidis capped a 2-18 run to lead 24-40 and then raised the cushion to 26-45. Dino Gregory tried to keep his side alive with a three-point-play to close within 36-49, but Sofoklis Schortsanitis in the paint and Nikola Markovic from downtown gave a 41-55 margin to PAOK through three quarters. Georgios Dedas opened the last quarter by giving a 41-58 cushion to PAOK, but the home team made a big effort to climb within 56-60 when Milos Borisov nailed a three and Wittmann scored a jumper. Borisov from the foul line put Szonlonki ahead 65-64. A triple by Vojvoda made it 69-65 and sealed the incredible comeback by the home team.

Head Coaches

POR, PETER
Szolnoki Olaj
"The first quarter we did okay, but in the second we made lots of mistakes in defense, that is why we fell behind. For the last ten minutes we had a small lineup that found the rhythm and stopped PAOK, and with the help of the crowd we turned the game around and recorded a fantastic win.”
MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"We came to Szolnok to win and create a chance of moving up on the standings. I believe we played well during the first three quarters, but we were terrible in defense and offense in the last, so Szolnok came back and won. "

Players

KOVACS, PETER
Szolnoki Olaj
"We believed in the victory even when we trailed by 19 points. Through the first three quarters we shot the ball poorly, but we did not give up, found a formidable and small lineup and as our supporters were behind us, we did a great job of coming back and winning a crucial game.”
DEDAS, GEORGIOS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"We were great up until the 33rd minute, then we made stupid mistakes and as the crowd stood behind Szolnok, they came back and won... We had a chance in the last minute, but Szolnok penalised us with free throws and three-pointers.”
