THE TAKE

Looking to bounce back after a huge defeat on the road last week, Triumph Lyubertsy of Russia goes back home to face Last 16 Week 1 winner Budivelnik Kiev of Ukraine. Triumph was beaten comprehensively by Buducnost in the opening game of its Last 16 campaign, struggling on two-pointers and committing 16 turnovers in a tough night. A swift turnaround is what will be needed against Budivelnik –a team which poses its own unique problems. The Ukranian side’s strength lies in its offensive rebounding, as evidenced by its 20 offensive boards last week –some 7 more than any other team in the Eurocup. Leo Lyons and Artur Drozdov grabbed 5 each that night and will be tough opposition for Triumph’s Tasamin Mitchell and Kyle Landry to keep in check. Defense will be another key for Triumph against the balanced offense of Coach Bagatskis’ team. Twice MVP of the Week this season, Tywain McKee will look to set the tempo for his side, fueling shooters Sergey Karasev -who did not score in double digits for the first time this season in Podgorica- and Yuval Naimy. McKee’s matchup with Budivelnik’s competent ball handler Malcolm Delaney, who finished up without conceding a single turnover against Banvit, will be crucial. Triumph must also contain two big players coming off the bench for the Ukrainian side: Frank Robinson and veteran shooter Dainius Salenga. This is a game that the home team needs to win to begin a positive run, but could also be a big step forward for Budivelnik if it can send Triumph to a second consecutive defeat.

Quotes Head Coaches

KARASEV, VASILY
BC Triumph Lyubertsy
"Budivelnik is a good, balanced team with good frontcourt players and good playmakers, too. Leo Lyons, Malcolm Delaney, Georgi Tsintsadze and Artur Drozdov are their leaders. According to the stats, they score most of the team's points. There is not a single leader in this team, so this is why we cannot focus in just one of these players. Any of their players can step up in any game. It is harder for us to play against such balanced teams as Budivelnik this season than facing teams with a clear leader."

Players

Sergiy Gorbenko - BC Budivelnik Kiev - EC12 - (photo budivelnyk.ua)Budivelnik Kyiv escaped from Triumph Sports Palace with a thrilling 84-85 victory over Triumph Lyubertsy thanks to a Leo Lyon layup with 77 seconds left. Tyawin McKee gave an 84-83 lead to the home team with 1:22 left in the game and Lyons posted the game winner five seconds later, but the hero was Sergiy Gorbenko, who blocked the final attempt of Artem Vikhrov at the buzzer. Budivelnik remains unbeaten in Group I, while Triumphs is still winless. Lyons led the way with 26 points and 16 rebounds for the winners with a performance index index rating of 32; Malcolm Delany added 16 points with 6 rebounds and 3 steals, while Gorbenko scored 14. Tywain McKee was the main contributor for Lyubertsy with 21 points and 7 assists Sergey Karasev scored 17, Kyle Landry 12 with 8 rebounds and Tasamin Mitchell 10.

Evgeny Valiev opened the score for the home team, but 4 consecutive points from Lyons made it 2-4. Karasev and Mitchell fueled the home team before a three by Lyons put his team in front 9-10. Back-to-back triples by Lyons and Delaney increased the margin for the Ukrainian side to 15-19. Then Michalilis Anisimov took over, scoring twice from mid range to make it 17-24. McKee pushed his side with 6 points in a row to finish the first quarter at 23-26. George Tsintsadze, from beyond the arc, opened the second quarter and baskets by Karasev and Valiev closed the gap to 30-31. A three-point-play for Anisimov and a put back by Lyon extended the Budivelnik cushion to 30-36. Delaney nailed a triple for a comfortable 36-45 advantage. Even though McKee answered with 5 points in a row, Lyons and Delaney form the foul line scored for a double digit margin of 39-51. McKee from downtown and Karasev kept the hosts within 47-53 at halftime.

Lyons and Artem Vikhrov exchanged jumpers, before a dunk by Landry and a triple by Vikhrov cut the margin to 54-57. Lyons bagged 5 points in a row to go up 56-62, but then a 13-0 Triumph charge highlighted by a three-point-play of Vikhrov and capped with a McKee layup gave a 69-62 advantage to the home team. Gorbenko hit a three, which was answered immediately by Mikhail Kulagin. Then McKee scored from the foul line to fix the score at 74-65 through three quarters for Triumph. Gorbenko showed all his skills opening the last quarter by scoring 8 points in a row to bring his team within 1. Free throw from Delaney gave back the lead to Budivelnik with less than four minutes left in the game. Landry and Delaney again gave the lead to the respective teams. McKee scored for 84-83, what would prove to be the last advantage for the hosts, then Lyons scored the game winner before Gorbenko blocked the last attempt by Vikhrov at the buzzer to seal the win.

Head Coaches

KARASEV, VASILY
BC Triumph Lyubertsy
"I’m satisfied with my team today. We fought all the game till the end, but in the last play we lacked a bit of luck. Valiev played today with an injury, and Landry has a cold, but he played and helped our team. "
BAGATSKIS, AINARS
BC Budivelnik Kiev
"We had our fourth game in eight days and our team was tired and we had an injured player, Salenga, who didn’t play tonight. In the first half we tried to score more, but didn’t play defense, and I told players to pay attention to defense. But in the third quarter we made a few mistakes and Triumph took the chance. I asked my team to show the character and they tried to do their best in defense. The ending was not what we expected, but it was lucky for us. "

Players

LANDRY, KYLE
BC Triumph Lyubertsy
"It was a tough game. We ran a good game, but it rolled out at the end. We were almost unlucky at the end. It was a tough loss, but we‘ll keep working. We have to figure out our problems and win the games. "
GORBENKO, SERGIY
BC Budivelnik Kiev
"We started good in offense, but we let our opponent shoot a lot and we played soft defense. In the second half we started very bad, made stupid mistakes, and Triumph made a lot of easy baskets and was leading. But in the last quarter we played tough, very aggressive defense and we won the game, though we didn’t play as our coach told us at in the last play. I think it was lucky for us. "
