THE TAKE

Stelmet Zielona Gora of Poland hosts Spartak St. Petersburg in a critical match in Group K. Both sides have a 1-1 record after two games played, emphasizing the even nature of this encounter. The host will try to push the game at a high pace, while the visitor -averaging 74 points per night in the Last 16 so far- will look to drop the tempo and work its way to the basket with patience. At point guard, Stelmet’s Walter Hodge has been the main contributor for his team, but struggled in the last game with Lokomotiv. He will face Spartak’s Janis Strelnieks and Zach Wright in the backcourt to dictate the speed of the game. Wright dished 8 assists last week, running Spartak’s game from the top of the key. The duels in the paint will also be crucial to kicking off the fast break for the host. Oliver Stevic and Dejan Borovnjak are solid under the defensive glass for Stelmet, who also count on the athleticism of Quinton Hosley for rebounding. Spartak big men Vladimir Dragicevic and Loukas Mavrokefalides are strong enough to compete with anybody, so get set for a battle for boards. The two scoring aces for their respective sides, Hosley and Joshua Carter, will face off in a match in which one eye will always be on the points differential.

Stelmet Zielona Gora
"We still don't know what is the matter with Quinton Hosley's health; we're still waiting for information from doctors. But we've had another problem right now, as Oliver Stevic left practice today and we don't know if he'll play tomorrow or not. I'm afraid that the case may be that we will have to play without both of them. Oliver had to leave practice because he had pain in the heel. Spartak is a team that we have analyzed very well. It's a strong team with a huge budget. Until now in the Eurocup, they had 7 wins and only 1 loss. They are playing very good in the Russian championship, too. So, I think that tomorrow we will face a very strong opponent. This game will be one of the crucial games for us. This situation we have in our team right now puts us in a slightly disadvantageous position. We cannot decide nothing on our own, however. We have to wait for the doctor's opinion."

"Our teammates who left for most of the training session are a very important point to our team; they are our leaders. We need them very much and we do not know at the moment whether they will play or not -- the doctors decide -- but we really need them. At this time, we do not think that we have achieved our plan in the Eurocup competition. We want to surprise people again, and it would be a good way to show that our first round was not an accident. We want to advance, we feel very good and we feel that we can do it. If it turns out that tomorrow we will play without Oliver and Quinton, the task will be difficult. But we will fight, we will give our heart and we will try. Tomorrow's opponent is a tough rival. We know that it is a Russian team with good players. They are strong in all parts of the game and we have to play well on defense and attack well to defeat them."

"Congratulations to Spartak on a good, strong game. For over 95% of the game, we were passive and could not break through the pressure that the visitors used. We had a big problem on defense, and then in the second half came problems with our attack. The second quarter really decided the outcome. To be honest with the fans, I must stress that we had a problem today with Quinton Hosley and Oliver Stevic. Needless to say, Spartak was just better. We cannot live a dream and swing in the clouds. In this duel, these were the realities and facts. Spartak is the toughest opponent of the teams we played so far."
ZDOVC, JURE
Spartak St. Petersburg
"Congratulations on a good game for both teams. I want to praise my players, in particular for the second quarter, in which they were very good in attack. The second quarter was the key to our victory today. We were very nervous because we knew that Zielona Gora players are very good in offense. We knew that if we just had the slightest gap in the defense, they could score and so they did. Therefore, in the third and fourth quarter we further strengthened our defense so not to allow too many points. "
