THE STAKES

Both teams are 1-1 and will be looking to raise their records to the positive side. Banvit need to grab the win to stay unbeaten at home, a fundamental goal in a short competition, while Buducnost will try to build on last week’s road win with another. A victory here means either sole possession of second place or a tie for first with Spartak.

THE TAKE

Banvit would seem to have an advantage in the paint where the trio Kenan Bajramovic, Chuck Davis and Lance Williams have size, power and offensive skills to outduel Hasan Rizvic, Cedomir Vitkovac and Bojan Dubljevic. Banvit has a deep and experienced bench, while Buducnost can call on talented youngsters. The home crowd could help the hosts, who may also get a boost from newly signed point guard Kalin Lucas, formerly with Olympiacos.

Lance Williams - BK Banvit (Photo: Lokomotiv Kuban)Banvit BK improved to 2-1 in Last 16 Group K and increased its chances to make it to the Eurocup Quarterfinals by edging Buducnost Voli 68-61 in Bandirma, Turkey on Tuesday. Banvit improved to 2-1 in Group K and will qualify to the Quarterfinals if it beats Buducnost in Podgorica, Montenegro next week and Spartak downs Krka. Buducnost dropped to 1-2 and may run out of chances to qualify with a loss next week. Lance Williams paced the winners with 21 points on 9-of-10 two-pointers in less than 23 minutes. Chuck Davis added 12, Serkan Erdogan had 10 while Baris Ermis got 9, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for Banvit. Bojan Dubljevic and Cedomir Vitkovac each had 14 points for Buducnost while Jermaine Anderson added 10. A 12-0 run that Erkan Veyseloglu capped with free throws gave Banvit a 51-34 margin late in the third quarter. Buducnost managed to get within 62-60 with a minute to go but Williams scored in the paint and added free throws to lead Banvit to a pivotal win.

Williams got Banvit going with a jumper and a layup by Kenan Bajramovic gave Banvit a 4-0 lead. Anderson and Bojan Krstovic stepped up with consecutive baskets and a put-back layup by Vitkovac gave Buducnost its first lead, 4-6. Anderson capped a 0-9 Buducnost run with a three-pointer, as Williams and Dubljevic traded layups for a 6-11 score. Williams kept pacing Banvit with a layup-plus-foul and Davis scored down low but Aleksa Popovic and Dubljevic kept the guests ahead, 11-16. Banvit found a go-to guy in Erdogan, who had 5 points in a 7-0 run that gave his team a 18-16 edge after 10 minutes. Nikola Ivanovic sank a jumper and Vitkovac matched Izzet Turkylmaz's shot with a put-back basket for a 20-20 tie. A layup by Cemal Nalga and an easy basket by Cliff Hammonds gave Banvit some fresh air at 24-20. Hasan Rizvic and Hammonds exchanged jumpers but Davis and Erdogan made Banvit extend its margin to 31-24. A three-pointer by Anderson fixed the halftime score at 31-27.

Dubljevic struck from downtown immediately after the break but back-to-back baskets by Davis and Williams gave Banvit a 35-30 edge. Erdogan shined with a layup and Williams added a jumper but Vitkovac and Dubljevic kept Buducnost within 39-34. The guests entered the foul bonus early in the third quarter and Banvit made the most out of it. Davis and Erkan Veyseloglu each had 4 free throws in a 12-0 run that broke the game open, 51-34. Buducnost had been scoreless for 4 minutes until Anderson made free throws but a jumper by Hammonds made Banvit regain a 17-point margin, 53-36, after 30 minutes. Vitkovac and Krstovic took over early in the fourth quarter, combining for all points in an 0-8 run that brought Buducnost within single digits, 53-44. Williams scored again but Ivanovic and Vitkovac got the guests even closer, 55-48, with 6 minutes left. Williams hit a jumper that Vladimir Mihailovic erased with foul shots. Ermis hit a triple and Williams sank a jumper to restore a 62-52 Banvit lead with 3 minutes left. Buducnost was not done, however, as Ivanovic and Dubljevic fueled an 0-8 run to get their team within 62-60 with a minute to go. Williams scored again and added free throws to seal the outcome, 66-61, rounding his near-perfect game in style.
