The Take

The best scoring team in the competition, Avtodor Saratov (4-2), hosts Beisktas Sompo Japan Istanbul (3-3) for the first of three Group F games on Wednesday. Newcomer Avtodor beat Besiktas 79-103 five weeks ago in Istanbul, and is the only team that posts more than 90 points per contest through six rounds (90.3). Nonetheless, in its two home games so far, Avtodor has one win and one defeat. Besiktas has lost its last two games by an average of 17.5 points. Next, Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (2-4) and Gound 6 co-MVP Ksistof Lavrinovic take on visiting Szolnoki Olaj (2-4). Rytas looks to build on the momentum of its victory last week in what was new head coach Aurimas Jasilionis's debut on the bench. No team distributes the ball better (19.7 assists per game), makes more steals (9.0) or forces more turnovers (18.3) than Rytas. Meanwhile, Szolnoki has the Eurocup's second-highest turnover rate, 16.5 per game. PAOK Thessaloniki (2-4) hosts group leader Zenit St. Petersburg (5-1) which can clinch a Last 32 spot with a victory. PAOK has lost four of its last five games, while the visitors are perfect 3-0 on the road so far.

Quotes Head Coaches

ULUG, YAGIZER HAMDI
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"It will be the two strong teams' match in the Group E. Avtodor Saratov was on the lucky side to win the first match in our hall. Now we want to take the advantage by defeating them in Saratov. We came here without one of our strongest player Maciej Lampe. His absence is really critical."

Players

MURPHY, ERIK

"Away matches in Russia have always been tough. We want to leave here with a victory and forget about the loss we took in the first meetings of the season between groups. We are playing matches consecutively. We want to go through this period by taking the best results as much as we can."

Avtodor Saratov outlasts Besiktas

In a high-profile clash at Kristall Arena, Avtodor Saratov downed Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul 93-83 on Wednesday in Group E. Avtodor strengthen its position in the standings with a 5-2 record, while Besiktas fell to 3-4, but remains in the running to reach the Last 32. The game was close until the midway point of the last quarter, when Avtodor took a more comfortable margin, 79-69, and managed it the rest of the way. Paul Stoll starred with 21 points, 7 assists and 9 fouls drawn for the winners, Jeff Brooks added 20 points on 8-of-9 two-point shooting, Travis Peterson scored 15, Jeremy Chappell 13 and Artem Klimenko 12. Chinemelu ELonu scored 20 points in defeat, Cenk Akyol added 19, Lamont Hamilton 11 and Nate Wolters 10.

At the midway point of the first quarter, Akyol tied the score at 11-11 before his three pointer and a jumper bagged by Wolters gave an 11-16 margin to the visiting team. Chappell exploded with 5 consecutive points for the hosts, but Erik Murphy fixed the score at 17-21 for Besiktas after 10 minutes. Klimenko fueled the home team to take the lead at 24-23. Tremmell Darden and Stoll scored as the lead changed hands before Travis Peterson set a 34-30 margin for Avtodor. The hosts raised the lead through Chappell to 38-33. Then in 90 prolific seconds for Besiktas, Engin Atsur put his team in front 40-41, but Jeff Brooks after grabbing his own rebound scored underneath for a 42-41 halftime lead for Avtodor.

The home team took a slim margin early in the third quarter behind Brooks went up 57-50. Chinemelu Elonu and Akyol carried Besiktas to 62-60 before Stoll made it 64-60 through three quarters. Alan Makiev from mid-range and Peterson from long distance tried to break the balance at the midway point of the fourth quarter, putting the hosts ahead 75-66. Hamilton exploded for Besiktas and kept his team in the picture at 84-76 after his three-pointer with two minutes left. Peterson scored again from three-point land and Stoll 4 attempts from the free throw line to seal an Avtodor win.

Head Coaches

VASILYEV, ALEXEY
Avtodor Saratov
"We had a one-week interval between our previous game and the game tonight. I think it was one of the reasons for our not-well organized performance in the beginning of the game. Generally, we were able to stop Wolters. However, Akyol scored too many points. But we spoke about him and considered him as a very dangerous perimeter player. Sometimes we had a good pace. We made a lot of turnovers due to the high speed. It is really good we could win the game despite the many turnovers. I would like to thank my team and our fans who supported us very well tonight."
ULUG, YAGIZER HAMDI
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"First of all, I want to congratulate Avtodor Saratov. In my opinion, they are the best team in our group. The hosts controlled the game until the end. We responded to them very well in the first three quarters, but we lost control at the end of the game. We got tired in the last quarter and could not stop them."

Players

STOLL, PAUL
Avtodor Saratov
"We played solid in the first half. In the second half we played really hard, really good defense and won. "
WOLTERS, NATE
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"It was a tough loss for us in a game against very strong opponent. They made more plays in the fourth quarter than we did. That allowed them to win."
