THE TAKE

Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar meets 2011 Eurocup runner-up Cajasol Sevilla in Krasnodar, Russia, with the possibility of advancing to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. Lokomotiv currently leads Group K with the Last 16's only undefeated record, 3-0, while Cajasol remains winless and has very few chances of getting back into the mix. Lokomotiv left Seville with an 80-87 road success last week, despite scoring just one three-pointer. Aleks Maric and Derrick Brown combined for 54 points, going 25 for 35 on two-pointers. Trying to contain that duo will be the main problem for Sevilla’s Latavious Williams and Luka Bogdanovic. The Sevilla frontcourt is undersized in comparison with Lokomotiv’s big centers, and the addition of newley-signed power player Richard Hendrix to the Russian side is another obstacle to overcome for Cajasol. In the backcourt, Sergey Bykov, Mantas Kalnietis and Nick Calathes have the talent and experience to work the ball inside or to finish if necessary for Lokomotiv. Sevilla perimeter players Tomas Satoransky, Milenko Tepic and Roderick Blakney must hold their own, or more, against their hosts if they want to stay in the quarterfinals race.

"It is necessary to treat the game with Cajasol very seriously. Our main task is to play from the defense, control the selection, to be attentive to the Spanish snipers and stop fastbreaks."

"Cajasol is an unpredictable team. We did not expect such resistance on their home court. After such a difficult away win we must do everything to be easy to beat them at home. The main thing - to play on the Spanish defense and dictate the game, that they are not forced upon us their rhythm."
Derrick Brown - Lokomotiv Kuban - EC12 (photo lokobasket.com)PBC Lokomotiv Kuban booked a place in the Eurocup quarterfinals with an 83-72 win over Cajasol Sevilla on Wednesday afternoon, keeping its perfect record in the Last 16 intact and denying the road side a first win of the stage. While Cajasol now has no hope of progressing, Lokomotiv’s path is assured after another key result in Group K went its way –Spartak St. Petersburg beat Stelmet Zielona Gora. Derrick Brown led Lokomotiv with 20 points and also contributed 5 rebounds and 5 assists, while Aleks Maric, whose late baskets ensured the win, tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mantas Kalnietis added 17 points, Simas Jasaitis scored 13 and Nick Calathes 11 for the winners. Luka Bogdanovic paced Cajasol with 15 points, with Tomas Satoransky added 14 and Latavious Williams 13 in defeat.

Cajasol made a storming start, going 0-9 ahead in the early stage of the first quarter. After being held scoreless for two-plus minutes, the home team finally put points on the board with free throws by Brown. He followed up with a series of dunks and steals which tightened things on the scoreboard. Lokomotiv's tactics revolved around putting the ball inside and, while it did not convert from outside the arc, Cajasol's Satoransky, Roderick Blakney and John Holland all hit triples with that pulled the road team to a 15-23 lead at the end of the quarter. Maric finally got his first points at the start of the second quarter. However, Cajasol remained in front as Williams did an excellent job inside on defense, which he then transitioned into offensive power with 8 of Cajasol’s 16 points in the period. His hot streak kept his team ahead, 35-39, when the halftime buzzer sounded. Lokomotiv had yet to open its account from downtown, but was shooting with 68% accuracy inside and was dominating the boards with 19 rebounds to Cajasol’s 11.

Brown continued to send down the dunks in the third quarter, turning the game in Lokomotiv’s favor midway through before Cajasol’s Joan Sastre leveled things up at 49-49. Assists and baskets from Calathes helped the home team’s cause, and Simas Jasaitis finally scored Lokomotiv’s first three-pointers with a pair of shots from beyond the perimeter. Kalnietis also hit a triple in a spree of scoring. Jasaitis and Kalnietis both went into double digits as Lokomotiv Kuban went 63-52 in front. New Lokomotiv signing Richard Hendrix made an impact off the bench in the final quarter, starting off with a dunk off Brown’s assist. For Cajasol, Williams kept on pulling down rebounds, but only bench player Bryan Asbury was able to get any offensive threat going in the early part of the quarter. Bogdanovic then stepped up for a pair of three-pointers in quick succession, making it a 9-pont game with just over five minutes left on the clock. Cajasol looked to be in with a chance of overhauling the deficit, but Maric layups and a dunk ended its hopes of a win against the Group K leader.

Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
PBC Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"Congratulations! This win brings us to the next round. Our goal is to enter the quarterfinals from first place and the win over Cajasol brings us closer to this goal. We are happy, but we are aware the game was not perfect. The first half was far from the game we played in the second one. We will take it into account and work on it. It’s not easy to compete with a team coached by Aito. Every game they suggest new kinds of interactions and new plans to which we try adapt every time. It’s difficult to adapt to their various schemes, but we did it for a while."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Cajasol Seville
"Lokomotiv Kuban and Cajasol played for different objectives tonight. Lokomotiv’s task was to succeed in the Eurocup, while we wished to try out our young players. We wished to include more Spanish guys in the game. We began with the youngest players we have. It was my goal to play with youth, while Lokomotiv played with experienced guys which physically stronger. We are not surprised with this loss. I am not upset with the defeat. To be continued!"

Players

BROWN, DERRICK
PBC Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"From the very beginning Cajasol was ready for tough game. First of all we failed on defense in the first half and as a result we didn’t succeed in offense. Especially the first quarter was disastrous. But then we showed our character and plucked up our courage. So we managed to reverse the game."
MARIC, ALEKS
PBC Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"Cajasol began with fast basketball, especially in the first quarter. We allowed 39 points first half and it was really nervous. I'm happy that we made such a spurt on the second half and even more happy that I was a part of this success. This is the second time against Cajasol that we have won."
BLAKNEY, RODERICK
Cajasol Seville
"It was a pleasure to come back to Krasnodar. I like how the fans treated me. It was warm! Although it took us too much time to get here from Spain. Of course this game was very difficult. It was going well till the third quarter, as it was in Spain. We made a lot of mistakes which allowed Loko to win. I wish them luck and wins in the Eurocup."
