THE TAKE

Spartak St. Petersburg is visited by Stelmet Zielona Gora in a critical match in Group K. Spartak could advance to the next round by winning the game, thanks to a potential 2-0 record in the head-to-head with the Polish side. That will depend also on Lokomotiv Kuban defeating winless Cajasol Seville. In short, then, Zielona Gora needs the win just to stay alive in the competition. A week ago Spartak beat Zielona Gora 69-89 on the road, thanks to a great defensive performance and an excellent two-point shooting percentage (62.2). A balanced offense, with all the starters scoring in double digits, and a good contribution from the bench by Janis Strelnieks and Nikita Kurbanov were the other keys for the Russian side. Containing Zielona Gora’s Walter Hodge will be this first worry for the home team, while inside duels pitting Vladimir Dragicevic and Loukas Mavrokefalides of Spartak against Dejan Borovnjak and Oliver Stevic will also be critical to the outcome. A 2012 semifinalist, Spartak St Petersburg has a great chance of reaching this year’s quarterfinals if it takes advantage of this week's home game. It will have, however, have to be very wary of Zielona Gora, which has already won twice on the road.

Quotes Head Coaches

ZDOVC, JURE
Spartak St. Petersburg
"Zielona Gora is a tough opponent. We won by a lot of points in the previous game with them and this fact can allow us to relax automatically. We all know that Zielona Gora is a very good offensive team, they won a lot of games. They beat Unics in Kazan easy. Unics won in Zielona Gora, relaxed after this and lost at home. So we must forget about the first game. It’s a good thing that we take a lesson from our game with CSKA. It will be a very important game for us. If we beat Zielona Gora and Lokomotiv Kuban beats Cajasol at home, we’ll be in the quarterfinals."

Players

Zach Wright - Spartak St.Petersburg - EC12 (photo Spartak SPB)Spartak St. Petersburg routed Stelmet Zielona Gora 81-54 on Wednesday evening to march into the quarterfinals. Spartak improved to 3-1 in Last 16 Group K and 9-1 this season in securing a ticket to the next round, along with fellow Russian side Lokomotiv Kuban, which also advanced following Spartak’s victory. A second quarter capitulation from Stelmet – in which it scored just 7 points to Spartak’s 22 – had a large say in the outcome. Zach Wright led the way with 17 points for Spartak, including the final points of the night with a dunk. He also provided 8 assists. Vladamir Dragisevic added 14 points for the winners, Joshua Carter 13, Loukas Mavrokefalides 11 and Fedor Dmitriev 10. Dejan Borovnjak and Oliver Stevic led the visitors with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The advantage went back-and-forth right from the moment Marcin Sroka scored the game's first basket, under 7 seconds in. Sroka would be Stelmet's most persistent scorer in the quarter, although his only other baskets would come from the free throw line. Having more success from open play was Spartak's Wright, whose dunks proved to be the main offensive weapon for the hosts in the first quarter. He threw down 8 points before the first buzzer -enough to put his team 18-17 ahead. Wright went outside in the second quarter and knocked down a three-pointer that took him into double digits with 11 points. A further two baskets inside by Wright capped off a run of 10 unanswered points for Spartak, while Stelmet experienced a barren spell that would not be terminated until almost seven minutes into the quarter. Rob Jones finally got Stelmet going with a free throw, but the road side was comprehensively outscored 22-7 in what would prove to be a pivotal quarter. The game went into halftime with Spartak in front, 40-24.

Stelmet needed a response in the third quarter after the previous disastrous 10 minutes, but outscoring a Spartak side in full flight was to prove a tough task. Borovnjak decided to take matters into his own hands for the road team, and was its only player to score more than one basket in the quarter; he sank 4 inside shots. He was matched, however, by Dragisevic and an impressive quarter from Carter, as the lead remained almost insurmountable. A final exclamation point was added to the period when Spartak’s Yaroslav Koralev and Nikita Kurbanov both sank late three-pointers to take the score to 65-42. With the job almost done, Carter and Dragisevic were benched during the final quarter and the reserves were given the job of maintaining the Spartak advantage. Up until the halfway mark, the teams were level for scoring. A flurry of points for Spartak newcomer Darius Johnson-Odom and a Wright dunk later, and the home side had outscored Stelmet again. It had done so in every quarter, and thus took an 81-54 win.

Head Coaches

ZDOVC, JURE
Spartak St. Petersburg
"Thank you the coach of Zielona Gora for the good words about us and congratulations to my players. Our opponent is a dangerous team, it had some big victories in the Eurocup and is one of the best offensive teams in Eurocup. After we lost to Lokomotiv-Kuban, we needed to win our next games. And the games with Zielona Gora were very important for us. We won in Poland with a big difference and if we relaxed, the opponent could have won. We had to be focused on our defense to stop the main players of the opponent. They played without Hosley; he is a very important player . We played hard tonight and deserved this victory."
UVALIN, MIHAILO
Stelmet Zielona Gora
"Congratulations to Spartak. They deserved to win. These two games showed that Spartak is a better team than we are. They deserve to go to quarterfinals. In this game we had more downs than ups. We could have stopped Spartak in the third quarter, we played zone, but the advantage didn’t decrease to less than 15 points. We played almost equal with them in the beginning of the game and during some minutes in the second half. But Spartak is more high class and has other goals than we have. We are glad that we are in the Last 16 and we had good victories in the Eurocup. But we have to have real goals."
