The Take

On Tuesday, Valencia Basket (3-2) takes Paris Levallois (4-1). Valencia is undefeated at home and already beat Paris on the road. Group C leader Ratiopharm Ulm (4-1) visits difficult Asvel Villeurbanne Lyon (3-2) in a direct fight for first place. Cimberio Varese (1-4) hosts Union Olimpija Ljubljana (3-2). It is Olimpija's first visits to Varese since 1971, which adds even more anticipation to this showdown.

Quotes Head Coaches

VINCENT, PIERRE
Asvel Villeurbanne Lyon
"Ratiopharm Ulm is a good team, they play coherent basketball, they have a well defined style, with qualities but with limits as well. Eurocup is a tight competition, and we are in a good position at the moment. So tomorrow's game is really important for us but a victory won't guarantee anything, we will just be one step closer to qualification to Last 32!"
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Ratiopharm Ulm
"Starting in the second half of the Eurocup regular season we have a pretty comfortable point of departure. But there’s still no time to relax – at least four teams are able to reach the Eurocup Last 32. Our goal is to defend the advantage we created through two wins on the road. We have the chance to win at Lyon but we know that they will be stronger than a few weeks ago. If our Center Trent Plaisted is missing we have to find other solutions. For example, our youngster Jonathan Maier showed his potential last weekend. To stop Lyon’s topscorer Edwin Jackson at shooting we will defend him as close as possible."

Players

JOSEPH, GEORGI
Asvel Villeurbanne Lyon
"At the moment we feel good, but even after our victory against Valencia, we are still focus on our objectives. I don't know if we would be closer to qualification, I'm only focus on the game that we have to play and we have to take one's revenge on Ulm's team."
NANKIVIL, KEATON
Ratiopharm Ulm
"The schedule is a bonus for us: After the loss in Berlin we don`t have time to think about it too much. I personally won`t go back to much on my strong shooting in the first game against Lyon. But I can imagine that Asvel will do it – what makes it tougher for me. If Trent Plaisted is out we have to focus more on team rebounding. No one can make up Trent`s eight rebounds per game – but when everybody catches one rebound more that would help."
Cameron Long - Ratiopharm Ulm - EC13 (photo Asvel Villeurbanne)Ratiopharm Ulm led from start to finish, handling Asvel Villeurbanne Lyon 60-78 for its fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday. Win keeps Ulm atop of the Group C standings with 5-1 record, while Asvel drops to 3-3. The visitors took control at the start of the game with 5-18 lead, and they never looked back. Asvel did not manage to bring the deficit down to single digits, and Ulm cruised to an important away victory, sweeping Asvel this season, and making another big step towards a place in the Last 32. Cameron Long paced the winners with 19 points, Adam Hess scored 12, and Per Guenther netted 10 with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Uche Nsonwu finished with 13 points for the hosts, and Travis Leslie scored 9 in defeat.

Ulm to the lead from the start with triples on the first two trips down the floor from Guenther and Long. Hess and Jonathan Maier added a couple of baskets each, before Keaton Nankivil made it 5-18. Thomas Larrouquis scored twice and Paccelis Morlende triple helped the hosts halved the deficit, but Matt Howard ended quarter with a three-pointer for 14-26. Howard made two easy layups early in the second, extending it to 16-32. On the other end, Nsonwu scored twice inside, and also sunk a jumper, but a triple from Philipp Schwethelm, a dunk from Will Clyburn, and a jumper from Daniel Theis made it 22-39. The hosts did manage to hold Ulm to only one field goal during 4 minutes late in the second quarter, and during that span Nsonwu made 7of 9 free throws, cutting it to 34-44 at halftime. Right after the break, Long and Edwin Jackson traded three-pointers, before layups from Long and Guenther, plus a put-back from Hess, extended it to 39-55. Jackson hit another one from downtown for the hosts, but a dunk from Theis and a triple from Long kept them at bay, and Ulm held 46-62 after three quarters. In the fourth, Chris Wright sunk a triple, and Amara Sy a two-point shot. But Howard and Long scored layups, before threes from Guenther and Hess extended it to 53-72, sealing the deal.

Head Coaches

VINCENT, PIERRE
Asvel Villeurbanne Lyon
"We are less talented than Ulm. And to control a team like this, we ought to play more intensively from the beginning. We let them play their game, they gained confidence and it became very, very difficult for us… We were dominated in each part of the game. We fought with our strength, but we didn't respect enough what we prepared for the game. I'm just focused on the next game and I'm not interested by the other games."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
Ratiopharm Ulm
"We didn't expect to win from 18 points, especially without two of our main players. I'm very happy with our strong defense. I'm proud because we had to struggle a lot with that point in [the German League]. It allows us to be more efficient offensively. We played a very good game, with tough shots and spectacular dunks. Asvel has a good chance to reach the next round and we are now two games ahead of them. We wish them all the best for the future."
