THE TAKE

Cibona Zagreb comes back to the Eurocup with a roster that can compete with the best. Experienced players like Davor Kus, Andrija Zizic and Ivan Tomas are some of the familiar faces, as well as big man Tomislav Zubcic and newcomers DJ Strawberry, Justin Hamilton and talented youngster Marko Arapovic. 2012 finalist Spartak St. Petersburg retain coach Jure Zdvoc, with 2012 Eurocup MVP Patrick Beverley, Loukas Mavrokefalides and Vladimir Dragicevic joined by American players on the perimeter Joshua Carter and Zach Wright. Stopping Beverley will be the main goal for the home team and, while both sides have plenty of shooters and finishers, the fight in the paint could be crucial for deciding the winner.

Quotes Head Coaches

MRSIC, VELJKO
KK Cibona Zagreb
"We welcome the start of the Eurocup. From now until the end of the year we will have two games per week. It will be extremely hard for the team, but maybe the guys will like it more than to train every day. BC Spartak St. Petersburg is one of the favorites of the Eurocup competition. The team is unbeaten in the VTB League. It will be an interesting match and I hope we will find a way to respond to this team."
ZDOVC, JURE
Spartak St. Petersburg
“In Eurocup every game is important. We can’t allow any kicks in all 6 games of the group round. We will play the first game with Cibona which is a good team with history. There are some good foreign players, experienced Croatian players and young players in their roster. They have a full roster with 12 players. For sure it will be a very difficult game for us. As last year, every team will play against us with concentration and motivation. If you want to compete on a high level, with the best teams, it’s normal, it’s part of the game. We will try to win, we will do everything, but with Cibona, as I said before, we will have a tough game. They play better and better, they won the last game. It will be very interesting how this game will finish."

Cibona was limited to just 3 points in 7 minutes and free throws by Masic only brought the hosts within 54-61. Dmitriev and Mavrokefalidis made sure to keep Spartak way ahead until the final buzzer.

Head Coaches

MRSIC, VELJKO
KK Cibona Zagreb
"We expected this kind of game. We played against tough team. They play good defense. We had a chance to win, but we did not realize some of our shots. We lost in a few minutes of the last quarter. They were physically dominant. I believed we could win this game, but you play as long as your opponent lets you to play. We must improve our game in offense. It is good that we held Spartak to only 64 points. Our problem is ball flow and speed of execution. But we are missing some athletic players for that. In the future, we will try to win games with good defense."
ZDOVC, JURE

"First of all, I have to congratulate my guys on the victory. We played against a team that is rising in form, although they have had problems with injuries. Cibona is covered on every positions. But because of the injury to Hamilton, they posted other players and we had problems in the beginning. I can say that we won thanks to our good defense. I set a goal in front of my boys; you must not allow more than 60 points! We did it! In every game our goal is to make a difference with good defense. Today we made too many mistakes. Cibona tried to slow us down with zone defense and we shot free throws badly - only 47%. I did not like the beginning because it was too easy. After 0-8, my team was not enough concentrated. Cibona got wings. Fortunately we stopped them."
