THE TAKE

Undefeated Group K leader Lokomotiv Kuban (4-0) faces another team already advanced to the quarterfinals, Spartak St. Petersburg (3-1), in an all-Russian tussle for the top spot in Group K. If Lokomotiv wins the game, then first place goes its way. Otherwise, it has to keep a losing deficit to under 14 points and then win the last game of the round. For Spartak, a win by over 14 points and a victory next week would see it take first place in the group. The home team has many big players in its roster, with a backcourt consisting of Mantas Kalnietis and former Euroleague champ Nick Calathes. That pairing has to challenge Spartak newcomer Darius Johnson-Odom and Zach Wright in what will be a fun matchup to watch. But it is under the glasses that Lokomotiv has built its success so far in the Last 16. Aleks Maric and Derrick Brown have been joined by former Euroleague champ Aleksey Savrasenko and former Euroleague MVP of the Week Richard Hendrix to provide a wealth of options on rebounding and inside scoring. It won't be easy for Vladimir Dragicveic and Loukas Mavrokefalides to keep them under control, but that will be the task of the evening for the Spartak pair if their team is going to keep battling for first place in the group.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
PBC Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"Spartak is on the run now. This ambitious team has gained some important victories in European competition, and meeting with them will be decisive for us . Spartak has very strong and experienced players - Carter, Mavrokefalidis, Rait and others. Our task is to neutralize the leaders, playing with good energy and show our quality team basketball."
ZDOVC, JURE
Spartak St. Petersburg
"The game against Lokomotiv will be very important but mostly it’s the game of prestige. They beat us in St.Petersburg so if the players have the pride they will try to make the revenge. But this game willn’t be the death game. We and Lokomotiv are qualified for quarterfinal. And in 2 days we’ll have a very important game in Samara in VTB United league. Also we’ll play later with Lokomotiv in PBL Russian championships. So we haven’t to show everything in this game. We have to play in normal basketball and if we have a chance to win certainly we have to take this chance."

"It is a decisive match and winning therein is very important for us. Spartak is playing mostly on defense, and playing with them is never easy. Zdovc is a very good coach who prioritizes in the game and confesses active smart basketball. A simple walk isn't worth waiting for. It is great that we won the first match, that to us, Spartak will come not just to win, but win with a large difference in the score."
Derrick Brown - Lokomotiv Kuban - EC12 (photo Spartak St. Petersburg)Lokomotiv Kuban became the Group K champion by routing Spartak St. Petersburg 77-72 on Wednesday in Krasnodar, Russia. Lokomotiv remained undefeated with a 5-0 record, while Spartak, which had already qualified for the quarterfinals, is second at 3-2. The home team led 36-31 at halftime and used a 20-6 third-quarter run to break the game open, 59-41. Spartak came close in the final minutes, 71-68, but Lokomotiv never lost the lead. Derrick Brown led the winners with 18 points, Aleks Maric bagged 16, Simas Jasaitis 15, Mantas Kalnietis contributed 11 and Nick Calathes had more rebounds (9) than points (8). Josh Carter of Spartak led all the scorers with 20 points, Loukas Mavrokefalides netted 12 and Darius Johnson-Odom 10.

Lokomotiv got going with back-to-back lay ups by Maric before a mid-range jumper from Mavrokefalides tied it. A Brown dunk inflated the cushion to 9-4 before Johnson Odom’s jumper and easy points in the open court from Vladimir Dragicevic gave Spartak its first advantage, 11-13. Brown from downtown and Jasaitis from mid range gave a 16-13 margin to Lokomotiv after 10 minutes. Early in the second quarter a three-point-play by Mavrokefalides put the visitors up 18-19. The lead proceeded to change hands five times before 4 points from Kalnietis allowed the hosts to grab a 31-27 lead. Dragicevic tied it at 31-31, but a final 5-0 run capped by a steal and dunk by Kalnietis gave Lokomotiv a 36-31 halftime advantage.

Maric opened the third quarter with a bucket, but Dragicevic answered in the paint to stay close, 39-35. Lokomotiv soon went on a 13-2 run highlighted by Brown with 7 points to break the game open and lead 52-37. Johnosn-Odom scored for Spartak, but a triple by Jasaitis and a layup by Kalnietis extended the difference to 59-41. Johnson-Odom ended the quarter with a huge dunk for a 59-45 lead after 30 minutes. Carter from long distance kept Spartak in the hunt at 59-48, but the answer was a triple by Jasaitis and a jumper from Brown to push the hosts on 64-48. Mavrokefalides opened a 2-12 Spartak run in which Zach Wright scored 7 points to bring his team within 66-60 with four minutes left. Coming off it, Maric scored 2 free throws and Kalnietis fueled his side from long distance to reestablish a double-digit margin, 71-60. Carter hit back with three-pointers to close the gap to 71-68 with 1:42 left in the game. However Maric scored a layup with 46 seconds on the game clock to make it 75-70 and Calathes sealed the win from the foul line.

"It was a tough game. Before the game we knew our opponent had the same incentive to win as we had. That's why we expected that it wouldn't be easy. In the second half we gained an advantage of 18 points. We had a very good third quarter. Unfortunately we let them to cut it to three points. But we managed to concentrate and won the game. The main thing is that we got first place in Group K."
