The Take

In a high-profile showdown, Aris Thessaloniki (4-3) hosts Unics Kazan (5-2). The first clash between two sides this season went into overtime, and Aris prevailed on the road 73-74. Aris is 3-0 at home this season, but Unics arrives knowing it can clinch a Last 32 berth with a victory. Banvit Banidrma (3-4) looks to get back to the winning ways at home against Steaua CSM Eximbank Bucharest (2-5). It’s a must-win game for both teams. A victory would boost the Last 32 chances for Banvit, the competition's best offensive rebounding team at 15.4 per game, while the same result for Steaua would keep its hopes to advace alive. Buducnost VOLI Podgorica (3-4) aims to stay unbeaten at home when Trabzonspor Medical Park (4-3) pays a visit. Buducnost is 3-0 in Podgorica this season, and has won each of those games by a double-digit margin. It will be important for the Montenegrin champs to continue that streak against Trabzonspor, which won their Round 3 game 75-71. Trabzonspor has yet to win on the road in Eurocup, but if it does so in Podgorica, and Banvit beats Steaua, it would qualify for the Last 32.

Quotes Head Coaches

PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
Aris Thessaloniki
"We have a very tough game ahead. Unics Kazan is one of the strongest teams in the competition and one of the favorites to go until the end. They are in very good shape, according to their results and performances lately. We won in Russia a month ago, but this will be a totally different game. We know that if we win this game, we will make the biggest step to qualify to the next round. Against such a good team, we must be focused for 40 minutes, play very good defense and control the rebounds. We expect to see a packed “Nick Galis Hall”. Our fans helped us a lot so far and their support will be very important in such a difficult game."
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"Aris is a serious team with a number of good American players. This is why our task will be to neutralize their leaders. To be competitive in this game we shall play defensively the way we did during the recent three games: we played tough, established full contact, and retained top concentration. We shall be very careful about rebounds in the coming game, and move the ball fast in offense. I have no doubts, that the clash against Aris will not be an easy stroll. Our opponents will play at home, and therefore will have an advantage enjoying fantastic support of their fans."

Players

XANTHOPOULOS, VASSILIS
Aris Thessaloniki
"The game against Unics Kazan is crucial for us. We know that if we win, it will be very difficult to lose the qualification to the next round of the Eurocup. We will face a very tough opponent, who plays much better now, compared to the first game between us. Unics has a great quality in it’s roster and is one of the candidates to win this season’s cup. We must fight hard from the first minute and not lose our concentration in any part of the game. Keeping our opponent low in scoring, will be the key factor for tomorrow’s game."
KAIMAKOGLOU, KOSTAS
Unics Kazan
"It will be a pleasure for me to come back to my Motherland, Greece, and play there against Aris. Our opponents are a strong team, which play clever basketball. They have a number of good American players in their roster, they are the leaders of the team, which engineer Aris showing a good game. Aris has a lot of fans, which are usually very loudly supporting their team. I can expect them shout 40 minutes long. We will definitely have a difficult match-up. We shall take a lot of pangs to win on the road this time. Anyway, we shall do our best to take this win and keep the leaders spot in our group."

Aris beats Unics and storms to top spot in Group D

Aris Thessaloniki outlasted Unics Kazan 76-70 on Wednesday to storm into first place in Group D. Dominic Waters scored 19 points, including a pair of crucial free throws with 13.9 seconds left that made it a two-possession, as Aris beat Unics for the second time this season. The two teams now sport identical 5-3 records. Unics started strong through Keith Langford’s 12 first-quarter points and Art Parakhouski’s dominance in the paint to lead by double figures in the first quarter. But Aris outscored the visitors 63-50 over the remaining three to score the victory. Jerel McNeal netted 15 points and Jake Cohen and Jamelle Hagins added 14 each for the winners. Langford finished with 25 points for Unics, Parakhouski posted 11 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks and Kostas Kaimakoglou and Quino Colom accounted for 11 points each.

Langford finished a three-chance Unics attack with a three-point play to start the scoring. After McNeal got Aris on the scoreboard, Parakhouski and Langford teamed up on a 0-9 run that gave the visitors a double-digit lead, 2-12. Cohen scored 5 straight points to halve the deficit for Aris. Latavious Williams scored twice – surrounding Cohen free throws – to make it 13-20 at the end of the first quarter. Hagins brought Aris back within 5, but a Colom triple kept the visitors in charge. After a Parakhouski put-back, Spyros Mourtos and Waters rallied the hosts to within 25-28. Parakhouski continued to dominate with offensive rebounds and blocks before Langford pushed the lead back to 7. Cohen sank 4 free throws and his rejection of Lanford set up a McNeal fast break score to trim the difference to 32-34 at the break.

An Okaro White three-pointer gave Aris its first lead, 37-34, a minute into the second half. Waters added a three to push the lead to 4, but Colom evened things at 42-42 with free throws. A pair of Kaimakoglou tripled pushed Unics in front, 46-48, but Waters responded for the hosts to first tie it and then send Aris to a 56-52 advantage. Langford’s basket-plus-foul made it 56-55 through three quarters. Aris threatened to pull away through McNeal’s three-point play and Hagins’s layup off of Vassilis Xanthopoulos’s steal to take a 6-point lead. Parakhouski went to work inside, but threes from McNeal and Theodoros Zaras gave Aris a 67-59 cushion. Unics’s defense silenced the hosts for more than four minutes, but still trailed by 3 with two minutes to go after a three by Langford. Waters made it 70-65 with a minute-plus to play, however Anton Ponkrashov and combined for the next 4 points. White attacked the rim with 17.5 seconds left, drew a foul and made the resulting free throws. After Langford split free throws and Waters made 2, it was a two-possession game, which Hagins iced from the line.

Head Coaches

PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
Aris Thessaloniki
“It was a tough game. Congratulations to my players for their courage in the second half. In the first quarter we had a big problem in rebounds and we didn’t fight as needed. We got better in the second quarter. It was a huge victory against a big opponent. We’d like to thank our fans for their incredible support. It was very hard for the opponent to be effective in its game.”
PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
“We didn’t play good defense in the last quarter. We lost control at that time. Aris plays tough and it was allowed to do that; we didn’t play strong enough. We did in the last five minutes, but it wasn’t enough. We must improve our defense, become tougher, we don’t have another choice. We must give everything on the court to reach victory."

Players

MOURTOS, SPYROS
Aris Thessaloniki
“It was a big victory against a great team. Unics is the favorite for the first place in our group and one of the candidates to win this season’s Eurocup. We won because we were very focused, we played very good defense and we had very good choices on offense. We are happy tonight, but tomorrow is another day."
COLOM, QUINO
Unics Kazan
“It was a tough game. We had the control in the first half. We played as planned, with good defense and kept our opponent to 32 points. But in the second half Aris found its way in offense, moved the ball really well and made crucial three-point shots. They believed that they could win and they did it."
