The Take

Looking for a victory that would earn it a spot in the Last 32, Avtodor Saratov (5-2) and Round 7 co-MVP Paul Stoll welcome Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (2-5). The hosts have the highest-scoring offense (90.7) and have won five of their last six games with an average margin of 15.8 points. During that streak, they beat Rytas in Vilnius 81-97 as eight Avtodor players scored in double figures. Meanwhile, Rytas has two road wins in three games this season and forces a Eurocup-high 18.6 turnovers per contest. Already-qualified group leader Zenit St. Petersburg (6-1) hosts red-hot Szolnoki Olaj (3-4). The Hungarian champs are on a three-game winning streak, and a fourth would put them on the verge of a historic success and a place in the Last 32. But Zenit and three-point marksman Ryan Toolson, who averages 4.25 triples per game, aim for a victory that would help them clinch first place in the group. In a pivotal matchup for both teams, Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul (3-4) welcomes PAOK Thessaloniki (2-5). The visitors have dropped five of their last six games, while Besiktas has allowed a league-worst 92.7 points in the last three weeks. However, Besiktas aims for a performance similar to the one in Round 3, when it beat PAOK on the road 80-100.

Chappell hit free throws, Peterson scored down low and a dunk by Zabelin broke the game open, 45-28. Gaulius struck from downtown immediately after the break and so did Laprovittola to keep Rytas within 52-41. Peterson joined the three-point shootout, Laprovittola hit another one and Lukashov gave Avtodor a 57-44 margin. Lavrinovic hit a jump hook but Koleshnikov did better with one from downtown. Lavrinovic scored again and a fast break slam by Gailius made the hosts call timeout at 60-50. Peterson quickly rescued Saratov with a basket and Brooks added free throws for a 64-50 score. Laprovittola and Gailius kept pacing Rytas but free throws by Stoll and Lukashov kept Avtodor way ahead, 74-56. Rytas called timeout but Stoll and Makiev soon made it a 20-point game, 78-58. Orelik and Lavrinovic brought the guests a bit closer, 78-62, after 30 minutes. Peterson nailed a triple from the top of the key early in the fourth quarter and Koleshnikov struck twice from downtown in an 11-0 run which allowed Avtodor to seal the outcome, 89-62. Lavrinovic hit a jump hook but so did Peterson. Rytas kept trying but everything was said and done already, as Avtodor had sealed its ticket to the next round.

Head Coaches

VASILYEV, ALEXEY
Avtodor Saratov
“I think we played well tonight. The opposing team had nothing to lose in the last quarter and scored many points. Lietuvos Rytas arrived in Saratov without two big men in their roster. That, however, made Lavrinovic even more dangerous playing center. Generally we were able to stop him. We were running well and shot well tonight.”
JASILIONIS, AURIMAS
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
“Congratulations to Avtodor Saratov. It was a great pleasure to play against such a good, balanced team. They proved they are better at the moment.”

Players

KOLESNIKOV, EVGENY
Avtodor Saratov
“We prepared well for Lietuvos Rytas, played easily and confidently. All our guys were well replaced by each other. We had a good feeling of the game rhythm. We were a little bit relaxed at the end of the game and allowed the opponents to score easy points and cut the difference. I feel good, the injury doesn’t bother me.”
LAPROVITTOLA, NICOLAS
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
“We didn’t play defense tonight. We didn’t follow our rules and plan for the game. If you receive more than 100 points, it’s very difficult to win at this level of basketball. We still have chances to advance into the Last 32,, but we need to change our mentality. We have to forget this game and start preparing for the next one.”
