The Take

Looking for a victory that would earn it a spot in the Last 32, Avtodor Saratov (5-2) and Round 7 co-MVP Paul Stoll welcome Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (2-5). The hosts have the highest-scoring offense (90.7) and have won five of their last six games with an average margin of 15.8 points. During that streak, they beat Rytas in Vilnius 81-97 as eight Avtodor players scored in double figures. Meanwhile, Rytas has two road wins in three games this season and forces a Eurocup-high 18.6 turnovers per contest. Already-qualified group leader Zenit St. Petersburg (6-1) hosts red-hot Szolnoki Olaj (3-4). The Hungarian champs are on a three-game winning streak, and a fourth would put them on the verge of a historic success and a place in the Last 32. But Zenit and three-point marksman Ryan Toolson, who averages 4.25 triples per game, aim for a victory that would help them clinch first place in the group. In a pivotal matchup for both teams, Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul (3-4) welcomes PAOK Thessaloniki (2-5). The visitors have dropped five of their last six games, while Besiktas has allowed a league-worst 92.7 points in the last three weeks. However, Besiktas aims for a performance similar to the one in Round 3, when it beat PAOK on the road 80-100.

Quotes Head Coaches

ULUG, YAGIZER HAMDI
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
"This game is so important because of determining the ranking in the group. We must win tonight. We won away against our opponent and we need to repeat it. Maceij Lampe is still injured so he will miss the game. We want to play a good basketball with the support of our fans and we will win tonight. "
MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"A very difficult game against a very powerful team, awaits. The first round bout turned out really bad for us and we surely have to show a different attitude in order to gain something better from this contest, which is one of the last, if not the last, chances at staying in the hunt for a place in the Last 32. We must stay completely focused on our plan, pay attention to defense and rebounding, try to have control of the rhythm of the game and make good choices on offense."

"The last couple games are being played in the first phase. We had unlucky defeats. As an assertive team at home, we want to win tonight and have a big step to qualify. We beat our opponent at Greece and I hope we will win again."
DUVNJAK, UROS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"It's basically a game without tomorrow for us. We know that in order to stay in contention for qualification to the next round, we must defeat Besiktas, a very good team, at their home court. The group has many results that constantly turn things around, so everything's possible, but a win will give us better odds at completing our already hard task. I believe that we're slowly finding our identity, building chemistry as a team, as time is necessary when changes are made to a team. We will have to do our job on the court well to have a shot at victory. Attention to defense, grabbing rebounds and good decisions on offense."

Hatcher leads PAOK past Besiktas in overtime

PAOK Thessaloniki kept its Last 32 hopes alive and kicking with a 73-75 overtime victory over Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul on Wednesday at the Sinan Erdem Dome. Hatcher starred with 32 points, including 2 free throws to tie it with 7 seconds left in overtime and a pull-up jumper to win it. In between, his defense forced Besiktas guard Nate Wolters into a backcourt violation that gave PAOK the extra shot to win it. The result lifted PAOK to 3-5 in Group E alongside Besiktas and Szolnoki Olaj. However Besiktas, which beat PAOK by 20 in Round 3 in Greece, retained the potential tiebreak advantage between the sides. Kostas Vasileiadis added 10 points for the winners. Wolters led Besiktas with 16 points, Erik Murphy posted 14 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks, Cenk Akyol scored 12 – including a triple that sent the game to overtime – and Tremmell Darden 11.

The teams looked evenly matched at the start; there were six different leads in the first eight minutes and neither team led by more than a shot until Darden put Besiktas ahead 17-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Besiktas defense held the visitors scoreless for 10 full minutes bridging the first and second quarters, during which the hosts reeled off 14 straight points. Nikola Markovic scored 5 quick pointes to rejuvenate PAOK at 23-17, but another run, this time 11-0 led by Lamont Hamilton and Wolters, saw Besiktas double up its opponent. A Vasileiadis three-pointer made it 34-20 at halftime.

The teams traded blows to start the second half before PAOK broke loose with a 2-14 charge to get back in that game at 42-39. Hatcher scored 5 and Evangelos Margaritis 4 in the PAOK run. Murphy rescued Besiktas, but Margaritis free throws brought PAOK within 45-41 through three quarters. Murphy opened the fourth quarter with a shot from downtown, but before long Georgios Dedas answered with a three and Hatcher had PAOK within 48-47. Murphy connected from deep again and Besiktas led 53-49 midway through the fourth. Back-to-back threes by Uros Duvnjak and Hatcher and a three-point play by the latter put PAOK in control. Darden made it 55-58 with two minutes remaining. Even though Besiktas was unable to come up with a defensive stop, a missed free throw by Hatcher gave Akyol the opportunity to tie it at 62-62 with a three with 7 seconds remaining and force overtime.

Akyol’s baseline jumper made it 68-66 with two minutes on the clock, but Hatcher tied it from the line. After Hatcher and Akyol traded threes, it was 72-71 with 45 seconds remaining. After Murphy split free throws, Hatcher tied it at 73-73 with 2 from the line with 7 seconds to go. Hatcher forced Wolters into a backcourt violation, which allotted the visitors a final possession. Hatcher buried a long pull-up jumper that proved to be the difference as PAOK celebrated.
