The Take

In a pivotal game on Tuesday, JSF Nanterre (3-5) hosts EWE Baskets Oldenburg (3-5). Either team can go through to the Last 32 with a victory and some help from another group result on Wednesday. To qualify, Nanterre needs both to win by at least 4 points – in order to overcome 84-81 Round 4 loss against Oldenburg – and already-qualified Energia Dolomiti Trento (6-2) to beat visiting Telekom Baskets Bonn (2-6). For Oldenburg, its own victory combined with one by Trento is enough to go through. However, if Bonn defeats Trento, Oldenburg and Nanterre will continue hunting the qualification in the final week of the regular season. Also on Wednesday, Union Olimpija Ljubljana (4-4) hosts already-qualified Dominion Bilbao Basket (6-2) knowing that it can secure a Last 32 berth with a victory. However, Bilbao is undefeated in four games on the road, and leads the Eurocup in defense, allowing just 64.5 points per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

POTOCNIK, GASPER
Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"Ahead of this game, we are thinking only how to prepare ourselves as well as possible to show our best performance in this moment. Only then can we think of a good result for us. Bilbao is a great team that is playing European competitions for many years now. We face a difficult task, because we all know how good their individual players are. They also added Mirza Begic a few days ago. We will need to show our best performance possible if we want to be successful."
ALONSO, SITO
Dominion Bilbao Basket
“Our aim for these days, before the game before Labor Kutxa, is to put Mirza Begic in the dynamic of the team. Because of that, we are going to take the game against Olimpija as an important one, because they beat us in Bilbao. Olimpija is a team with a lot of versatility, with very big exterior players. Lucic, who did not play in Bilbao, us is going to complicate further the defense of their interior players.”

Players

MAHKOVIC, BLAZ
Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"If we win this game, we are advancing to the Eurocup Last 32. We will give it our all on the basketball court, and I only hope that we can achieve a positive result. We are well prepared, but on the other hand we know that Bilbao, which is already qualified for the Last3 2, will not come to Ljubljana to lose the game. We know each other well and there are no secrets. We need to stop their best players with good defense. We need to play concentrated on defense and on offense we need to get comfortable and try to play our game."
BEGIC, MIRZA
Dominion Bilbao Basket
“I am happy to be a part of a team with so much character, a team that always wants to give good results at the highest level possible. With the talent that we have and hard work, we can do very good things this season. Olimpija is a very young team that likes to run. We must play very hard, because they do not have too much confidence in their defense and do not rebound very well.”

Bilbao cruises through Ljubljana, stays perfect on the road

Dominion Bilbao Basket kept its grip on the first place in Group A with a no-doubt-about it 63-84 road win over Union Olimpija Ljubljana. It is fifth win in as many regular season road games for Bilbao which improved to 7-2, in at least a share of the first place in the group. Olimpija dropped to 4-5, in a share of the third place. Dairis Bertans led Bilbao with 26 points. Alex Ruoff scored 14, and Clevin Hannah had 10 in victory. Luka Rupnik netted 11, and Sava Lesic scored 10 points in defeat.

Zach Wright got Olimpija going at the start, helping it to 10-5, but Bertans opened his account from downtown and Giorgios Bogris had a three-point play, 12-11. Olimpija extended the lead through Sasa Zagorac and Blaz Mesicek, 17-11. But after Alex Mumbru and Rupnik traded triples, Alex Suarez hit from downtown for the visitors, too, helping make it 21-19 after 10 minutes. Rupnik hit twice more from long range to start the second, but Mirza Begic scored 5 points against his former club, before Ruoff put Bilbao in front, 27-28. Bertans continued the run with seven points of his own, including a triple, before Borja Mendia and Hannah joined in to help open 33-43. A triple from Ruoff wrapped up the second quarter, making it 37-48 at halftime.

After the break Lesic started a run by Olimpija, and baskets from Zagorac and Gregor Hrovat cut it to 46-51. But Mumbru scored twice and Hannah added a triple in a 0-7 run that helped Bilbao remain in control and the visitors held 52-62 going into the fourth quarter. That’s when Ruoff sparked a game-breaking 2-14 run, which Bertans fueled with 7 points of his own. Hannah scored twice more, and Mendia opened 54-76 lead with 3:30 left on the clock, icing the game. Before it was all over, Blaz Mahkovic strung together 6 points for the hosts, but Bogris did not allow the margin to drop below 17 points at any point.

Head Coaches

POTOCNIK, GASPER
Union Olimpija Ljubljana
"We many too many mistakes and played individually. You cannot play basketball this way. Bilbao forced us with their good aggressive defense into some turnovers, but we should have reacted better. We had 26 turnovers and you cannot win a game in the Eurocup with so many turnovers. Our offense was terrible today. We played solid for the first quarter and maybe some minutes in the third quarter, but everything else was terrible. We made too many mistakes, also in defense and the result is a combination of everything. Bilbao more than deserved to win tonight."
ALONSO, SITO
Dominion Bilbao Basket
"We started the game so-so, because we were thinking too much about fouls and we wasted our time on things we cannot control. We respect Union Olimpija a lot. They showed good performances in the Eurocup so far and all teams struggled here against them. We took advantage of the low post situations. They defended very well in pick-and-roll situations. We defended much better than in the first game, which was crucial. We showed energy and we are very happy to have won the game. We will try to beat Trento in last game of regular season, so we can finish first."
