Lucic, Bayern top UNICS in series opener

FC Bayern Munich used a big offensive second half and Vladimir Lucic scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter in holding off visiting UNICS Kazan 83-75 to take Game 1 of their best-of-three 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals series on Tuesday at Audi Dome. UNICS hosts Game 2 on Friday. It was a back-and-forth battle in the first half with the hosts holding a slim 33-32 halftime edge. Bayern never trailed in the second half, but UNICS kept threatening. In the end, Lucic and Devin Booker made key baskets down the stretch for Bayern to hold on. Booker collected 16 points and 9 rebounds, Cunningham scored 14 points and Danilo Barthel chipped in with 11 points in victory. Stefan Jovic dished 8 assists for Bayern, which missed its first 13 three-point attempts, but made 3 of 6 in the final quarter. Quino Colom led UNICS with 22 points on 5-for-7 three-point shooting. Stephane Lasme and Jamar Smith scored 13 apiece, and Evgeny Kolesnikov had 11 points for the visitors, who made 13 of 28 three-point shots, but that was not enough.

The two teams traded leads six times in the first six minutes. Melvin Ejim and Colom hit threes for the visitors, but Barthel dominated in the low post to score 6 consecutive points for Bayern and Cunningham’s reverse alley-oop dunk got the hosts to 15-10. Lasme knocked down consecutive jumpers for UNICS, but Nihad Dedovic made sure the hosts led 19-15 after 10 minutes. Dedovic’s banker made it 23-16 early in the second, but the visitors did not allow another field goal for more than four minutes, during which Trent Lockett had a jumper-plus-foul and Colom’s three helped put UNICS in front 24-27. A pair of baskets from Booker and a driving layup from Jovic got the hosts back in front and up 33-32 at halftime.

Bayern had a great start to the third quarter, going through Booker, who scored 8 points as the hosts opened a 45-35 lead midway through the quarter. But a triple from Smith and a three-point play and a three-pointer from Kolesnikov quickly got UNICS within 47-46. Braydon Hobbs hit a three-pointer with two minutes to go in the third quarter - Bayern’s first triple of the game - and then followed it with a transition three on the next trip down the floor. Anton Ponkrashov also hit twice from long range, including a banker to beat the shot-clock, to make it 55-52 going at the end of third quarter. At the start of the fourth, Lucic had an acrobatic reverse layup to score his first basket and followed it up with a three-pointer to restore a double-digit lead, 64-54. Colom hit back-to-back triples, including a four-point play, and Smith’s long-range dagger cut the deficit to 67-64. But Lucic had a dunk and another triple, and Jovic hit a long jumper over Lasme that made it 76-68 with two minutes left. Smith and Colom kept the visitors’ hopes alive, but Booker inside and Lucic, again from long range, sealed the outcome.

"It was tough night. Once the quarterfinals start, there is big pressure on the home team. Independent of how the result was in the end, you could see that a lot of pressure was in our players’ bodies and minds, in the first half especially. We did not make a three-pointer, which was maybe the first time in these couple of years, and that did not help in any way. Nevertheless, we were fighting and fighting on defense, trying to find our momentum. We were up by 10 points couple of times, but an unsportsmanlike foul and Kazan’s quick threes - they are a great shooting team - got them back within 3 or 4 points. We must understand individual tactics, in these games it is the most important thing. That is not something you can coach in a month or a year, it is something that players must live with and grow with. It is something that, at the end, gives the winning team a plus and the losing team a minus. Lucic had a really good night, he is growing day by day, and that is very important. Our bigs did a really good job, both Barthel and Booker, and Mike Zirbes, too, especially defensively. That was one of the keys to the game. As soon as we relieved our mind, stopped thinking about theory of basketball and started playing basketball, our basketball that we know how to play, we found something that is close to our characteristic as a team. Nothing is over; it will be a tough night on Friday. We have to have a short memory, forget this win. We must go there to win like we have been doing all year long against any opponent."
PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
UNICS Kazan
"Congrats to Bayern for the game. It was a tough game. In the first half we kept the score in the level that we wanted, and that put us in position to claim the game. Unfortunately in the second half we were horrible defensively. Although we did not have too many turnovers, we had an advantage in offensive rebounds and shot pretty well from three-pointers, we lost this game because of Bayern’s two-point shooting. They scored a lot of points driving to the basket, cutting to the ball behind our backs. This is something that we have to control. Both teams have to organize ourselves for another game, correct mistakes and make adjustments as we wait for Bayern in three days in Kazan."

"We knew it is going to be tough game for us, UNICS is a great team. They kind of slowed down our rhythm in the first half, and all the way until the middle of third quarter we could not find solutions against their match-up defense. In the end, I think we deserved this win. It is 1-0, and we need one more win to go into the semis. I feel good after my injury. It is behind me and I am ready to step up and play for my team."
SMITH, JAMAR
UNICS Kazan
"They played better defensively than we did. Towards the end when they needed to get stops, they got stops. And they made a lot of shots. I think we followed our plan well, making different guys shoot shots, but they were just making them."
