Reynolds powers Reggio Emilia over Zenit in Game 1

Jalen Reynolds posted a double-double to lead Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia to a 75-61 victory over Zenit St Petersburg in the opener of the teams’ best-of-three 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals series on Tuesday at PalaBigi. Jalen Reynolds dominated inside with 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting plus 11 rebounds in less than 20 minutes for the victors, who head to Russia for Game 2 on Friday knowing another victory is worth a spot in the quarterfinals. Amedeo Della Valle added 15 points and Julian Wright provided a handful of highlights among his 12 points for Reggio Emilia. Sergey Karasev paced Zenit with 19 points, Drew Gordon scored all of his 12 points before halftime and Malcolm Griffin scored 10. Reggio Emilia struggled with its outside shooting (3 of 16; 18.8% on threes), but recorded 19 assists to Zenit’s 9 and held Top 16 MVP Kyle Kuric to 3 points on 9 shot attempts.

Gordon made his impact felt early with Zenit’s first two baskets, but in between Della Valle connected from downtown to get Reggio Emilia going. Gordon kept the pressure on to put the visitors up 5-10, but Jalen Reynolds powered the hosts back. The big man scored three times as Reggio Emilia closed the gap to 13-14. Griffin's three-pointer gave Zenit a 13-17 lead advantage after 10 minutes. Karasev heated up for Zenit, however Riccardo Cervi scored twice for the hosts, who came back to tie it at 23-23. Julian Wright’s ferocious dunk gave the hosts their first lead, 27-25, and Della Valle capped an 8-0 run for a 6-point lead. Zenit revived its attack through Gordon and Griffin, but Della Valle free throws made it 35-29 at the break.

Kuric scored his first points with a triple in the second minute of the second half, which drew Zenit within 1, however Jalen Reynolds scored inside and Della Valle produced a steal and layup to make it 43-36 midway through the third quarter. The physical nature of the game saw a few players return to the bench with foul trouble. Julian Wright and Chris Wright each scored fantastic baskets late in the third quarter as the lead reached double figures for the first time. Evgeny Valiev scored for Zenit to make it 54-46 through three quarters. Julian Wright scored the first two baskets of the fourth quarter before Manuchar Markoishvili added a score. Chris Wright stretched the lead to 62-47. Karasev responded with a three-pointer and soon Griffin hit another to give Zenit some momentum, however Griffin fouled out with 4:30 remaining as Della Valle restored a double-digit lead with free throws. Karasev nailed back-to-back threes to give Zenit hope at 68-61 with a minute and a half to go, but a Jalen Reynolds slam and a Markoishvili triple put the game on ice.

MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"It was a really tough game. Every time that we did something to Zenit, like at the end, they pushed us into trouble, so that’s the focus on the second game. Now we have just a few minutes to celebrate 1-0. We know it will be really hard in the second game, but this was the right way to start the series. We were really focused on defense. There was an incredible atmosphere and we took energy from this. And if our focus was at 90 percent, to win at Zenit we need to be 100%."
KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"We lost this game on offense. On defense we played not so bad, but on offense we had a lot of problems."
