Ostend gets historical win in Seville

Telenet Ostend took a major step forwards to reach the elimination rounds in Group L by overwhelming Baloncesto Seville 63-94 on the road on Wednesday. Ostend will try to confirm its great moment against the other winner in Group L this week, Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius, next week. Pierre Antoine Gillet paced the winners with 15 points. Mateusz Ponitka added 13, John Prince had 12, Wes Wilkinson got 11 while Jean Salumu contributed 10 for Ostend. Kristaps Porzingis led Seville with 14 points. Derrick Byars added 11 for the hosts. Ostend led 8-17 after 10 minutes, boosted its margin to 26-45 at halftime and then again to 48-72 after 30 minutes, cruising to a well-deserved, no-doubt-about-it road win. It is Ostend's biggest win in European competitions in over a decade - since it beat BBC Etzella of Luxembourg 105-49 back in 1999.

Ponitka got Ostend going with a layup which Quentin Serron followed with a triple for a 0-5 lead. Byars hit a jumper which Khalid Boukichou bettered with a layup-plus-foul. Pierre Oriola and Wilkinson exchanged layups and a three-pointer by Prince boosted the guests' lead to 4-13. Ponitka hit free throws and Prince scored again for a 6-17 margin. Ben Woodside brought Seville within 8-17 after 10 minutes. Jared Berggen dunked early in the second quarter but Ondrej Balvin did better with a layup-plus-foul. Gillet stepped up with back-to-back triples and a layup by Niels Marnegrave made the hosts call timeout at 13-27. Nikola Radicevic and Porzingis tried to change things for Seville and a free throw by Oriola brought the hosts a bit closer, 22-35. Three-pointers by Salumu and Wilkinson, however, broke the game open, 22-45, after a 0-10 Ostend run. Porzingis singlehandedly brought Seville within 26-45 at halftime. Back-to-back triples by Wilkinson and Ponitka made it a 25-point game, 26-51, right after the break. Willy Hernangomez shined with a tip-in and a three-point play but Boukichou and an unstoppable Ponitka answered to keep Ostend way ahead, 33-57. Prince and Wilkinson struck from downtown and Salumu boosted the guests' margin to 38-67, enough for Ostend to lead 48-72 after 30 minutes. Nothing changed in the fourth quarter and a dunk by Aleksandar Marelja helped Ostend seal an outstanding road win in style.

"First of all, I am very happy for my team and the way we started the Last 32. During all 40 minutes, we played like a team, shared the ball and finished the game with 23 assists. We were afraid that we would have a rebounding problem, but the key to the game was being confident on playing well. I didn't think about other teams until now - like I said, we were afraid of this game tonight because we watched their game on Sunday [against Herbalife Gran Canaria in the Spanish League] and saw what we had in front of us. What we saw in Gran Canaria was great, in my opinion. They played a great game and we knew we have to play very aggressive, which we did and it paid off tonight."

"We weren't even close to the team we were the other day [in the Spanish League against Herbalife Gran Canaria]. Again, our opponent played tougher than us, moved the ball better than us and did everything better than ever. When a team plays better than you and you are trailing, turning things around is difficult because you make more and more mistakes."
