The Take

In an all-German showdown, FC Bayern Munich (1-0) hosts ratiopharm Ulm (0-1) for the second time in 10 days. Two teams met in the German League clash at the Audi Dome on January 3, and Bayern beat Ulm 101-85 behind five double-digit scorers, paced by 22 points and 8 rebounds from Bryce Taylor. Bayern hopes for a repeat of that outcome after getting off to a good start with a road win in its Last 32 opener. The same is true for Dominion Bilbao Basket (1-0) which welcomes Banvit Bandirma (0-1) to Spain. The two teams have combined to play 153 games in the competition in the past eight seasons, but have never played each other. Bilbao is on a seven-game winning streak, and has one of competition's best offenses, ranking fourth with 86.3 points per night. Banvit has third-most offensive rebounds, 143 through 11 games, good for an average of 13 per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

PESIC, SVETISLAV
FC Bayern Munich
"Compared to our last matchup with Ulm in the German League some days ago, we are now expecting a totally different game. In my whole career as a coach I experienced that the progress of two games is never the same, every game is different. But one thing we know for sure - the next game will be a really tough one. We have to be ready and well prepared for this one."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"The short All-Star break really served us well and helped the players coming back more energetic after an intense first half of the season. In preparing for the game against Bayern, we intensely dealt with the first game at Munich, especially the first half. We really slept in the first minutes of the game and allowed Munich a strong start; they played much more intensely than we did. Our focus now is to have a better start than the last time. However, that won’t be easy, because with Munich, there is a steamroller coming at us; they start every game with full steam and full throttle. Nevertheless I expect my team to now allow 100 points again. We have to play a nearly perfect game in order to win at Munich, but we have beaten some very strong teams already – not only at home, but also on the road.”

Players

TAYLOR, BRYCE
FC Bayern Munich
"lm struggled against Bilbao, so we are obviously expecting them to respond as a team. Even though we beat them in the German League a few days ago, we cannot expect that this game will automatically go the same way. We have to stay focused and find the right approach to the game."

Bayern downs German rival Ulm

In an all-German showdown, FC Bayern Munich defeated ratiopharm Ulm 83-69 to improve to 2-0 in Group G action on Wednesday night. Ulm dropped to 0-2 in a game Bayern took control in the first quarter, and opened a double-digit lead in the second. For the remainder of the game Ulm never got closer than 6 points, 53-47 in the third quarter, after which Bayern responded with a 9-1 run and cruised the rest of the way. Bryce Taylor finished the game with 19 points, and Nihad Djedovic scored 15. Alex Renfroe and Jhon Bryant had 14 points apiece in victory. Raymar Morgan had 23 points plus 7 rebounds for the visitors, and Augustine Rubit chipped in with 14 points in defeat.

Back-to-back triples from Rubit and Morgan put Ulm in front 3-8 after 100 seconds, but Taylor and Dusko Savanovic answered, hitting from long range for Bayern on consecutive possessions. Teams traded leads as Taylor and Renfroe had buckets for the hosts, and Morgan scored for Ulm, 13-14. Savanovic made plays on both ends of the floor that fueled an 8-1 run and helped Bayern hold 22-19 at the end of first quarter. Taylor opened the second quarter with a triple, and with help from Paul Zipser it was Bayern with the first double-digit lead of the night, 29-19. Justin Cobbs kept the margin at 10 points, before Rubit on one end and Nihad Djedovic on the other each hit a triple. Deon Thompson made it 38-26, but Chris Babb and Morgan made sure the hosts don’t run away, and Morgan worked the offensive glass to get Rubit a second chance point that made it 42-34. Bayern replied with back-to-back threes from Renfroe and Bryant, opening a 14-point margin, before Morgan’s put-back made it 48-36 at the break.

Morgan and Taylor traded triples to start third quarter, before Rubit and Taylor Braun combined for 8 points as Ulm closed within 53-47. But Bayern allowed only one field goal in more than 4 minutes, as Thompson and Bryant helped it open 62-49 lead. Per Guenther hit a triple for Ulm, but big man Bryant hit one for Bayern, making it 66-52 at the end of the third quarter. Djedovic extended it to 16 points early in the fourth. Morgan had a three-point play for the visitors, but a pair of threes from Renfroe put Bayern at 76-61. Taylor also added a three-pointer for the hosts, as they did not look back, comfortably closing out the game.

Head Coaches

PESIC, SVETISLAV
FC Bayern Munich
"We did not expect Ulm to play such excellent defense, so it was not easy for us to organize our offense as we are used to. A win by 14 points is good, especially after we had to deal with some injury problems this week. Dusko Savanovic was not able to train as we wanted him to and Alex Renfroe had his first practice session this Tuesday. We have two wins by now, but our group is still very balanced."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"I have to pay my team a huge compliment. We defended very well and did not allow our opponent to score fast points, but at the end we could not make our open shots and missed too many free throws. It is hard that we lost, but we can take many positive things out of this game."
