The Take

In an all-German showdown in Group A on Wednesday, Telekom Baskets Bonn hosts EWE Baskets Oldenburg. Interestingly, these two teams already played each other in the Eurocup three seasons ago and split road victories. Last season in the German League, they split home wins. In a high-profile clash of two teams that return to the Eurocup after a year away, Dominion Bilbao Basket welcomes JSF Nanterre. In two previous home games against French teams, Bilbao has won twice. Also on Wednesday, Union Olimpija Ljubljana plays host to newcomer Dolomiti Energia Trento. For its European debut, Trento travels 400 kilometers northeast to the Slovenian capital, where Olimpija will try to continue its streak of winning season openers in each of the past three seasons.

"The game didn't start the way we wanted. We were not able to execute the things that we wanted to do and had too much respect for our opponent. We knew Nanterre is a high-level team, very physical, with a good shooting percentage, like they showed tonight. In the first half, we were not able to do what we wanted to do. We did good things, but not all the time. We found good, close shots on offense, which we missed and that made us be a bit frustrated in the first half and we paid a high price for it. Everything changed after the break; we held Nanterre scoreless for five or six minutes and had more fun, getting better options on offense and defense. The game was on our side when we were up by 6 with four minutes left, but there was some situation, especially a steal that we didn't get anything from and to which Nanterre answered with a three-pointer. We have to learn from this, especially those players who haven't played this competition for a long time or are here for the first time. We have to be tougher and braver. I loved the way my team bounced back; we don't have to be afraid of anyone."

"It was a difficult game to win, as we played against a club from the Spanish league. It is very important to win the first game to finish in the top four of the group. It is important to win away from home, if we lose at home."
