The Take

On Tuesday, ALBA Berlin (0-1) opens the action in this group when it welcomes Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia (1-0). For the visitors, this is the first non-Italian team they face this season, in which they have six victories in as many games in all competitions. On Wednesday, Enel Basket Brindisi (0-1) makes its Eurocup home debut when it faces Le Mans Sarthe Basket (0-1). Both teams will be gunning for their first win of the season after narrow losses in Round 1. This is the ninth season in the competition for Le Mans, which has only twice started the season with back-to-back defeats. Also on Wednesday, Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas (1-0) hosts MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg (1-0). The two teams faced each other last time Ludwigsburg played in the competition, back in 2007-08, and Gran Canaria – last season's Eurocup runner-up – swept that series eight years ago with two double-digit wins.

Quotes Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"All games are different and difficult. In this case is very different because MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg has a game style very aggressive with real physical strength, trap defense, etc. It is something we are not used to. Right now some teams are in the 80% of their capacity, and others at 40%. We are maybe at 60%, but we must get closer to the 100%. We are in the path to achieve it, but it is not the 100% of the team, and if we are not able to improve, we will suffer in the future."
PATRICK, JOHN
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"Gran Canaria is really a strong team. They play very well together and don’t have actual weaknesses. Even their very tall centers have very good basketball skills. In the Spanish league they are the dominating team right now and are still undefeated. Gran Canaria come off a huge win at Bilbao. There is not much more to add."

Players

PAULI, ORIOL
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"To play in our arena always is important. I want to help the team wherever I can. This year I have practiced in the point guard position to adapt myself, so if the team needs me some minutes in that spot, I will try my best. Right now we have seen a few things of our rival, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, but we know that they are a very strong team in defense with high intensity in both ends of the floor. We must equal that energy if we want to have chances to win. We had three games with really good defense and we should do it again."

Gran Canaria hits 17 triples, cruises against Ludwigsburg

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas buried 17 three-pointers to cruise to 95-75 win over MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg on Wednesday night. By hitting 17 triples on 36 attempts, Gran Canaria tied its club record in the competition for three-point shots made in a game. Win improved Gran Canaria to 2-0 and first place in Group B, while Eurocup newcomer Ludwigsburg has 1-1 record in a share of second place. Sasu Salin had 17 points on 4-for-8 from downtown, Kyle Kuric also hit 4 triples and had 15 points, while Pablo Aguilar and Brad Newley each knocked down a pair of three-pointers while netting 14 points apiece. Ludwigsburg’s Mustafa Shakur was game’s highest scorer with 18 points, Shawn Huff netted 14, Jon Brockman collected 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Rocky Trice had 10 points and 7 rebounds in defeat.

Brockman scored 6 points and Huff hit a triple to give the visitors 7-13 early on, but Alen Omic sparked a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Xavi Rabaseda for 16-13. A second-chance three from Aguilar put Gran Canaria in control, giving it 23-15 after 10 minutes. A three from Salin helped the hosts to 27-17, but a three-point play from Shakur and a three-point shot from Huff had Ludwigsburg back within 29-25 midway through the second. Gran Canaria replied through Aguilar again, and with a triple from Kuric, but Jason Boone and Trice made it 37-32. Anzejs Pasecniks and Kuric hit back-to-back from downtown for 43-32, but Trice scored again to make it 43-35 at halftime.

Kuric hit two more shots from long range and Kevin Pangos added one for Gran Canaria, opening 54-37 margin after 3 minutes in the third quarter. Brad Loesing nailed one from downtown for the visitors, and Tekel Cotton and Shakur added baskets to Ludwigsburg’s tally. But a three from Newley, and two more from Salin kept the hosts in control, and with 67-55 lead after three quarters. Eulis Baez hit from downtown for 72-55 early in the fourth, before Huff answered with his third long-range shot, and Shakur scored twice for 72-62. But Salin hit his fourth three-point dagger, Newley added to the lead, and after a put-back from Brockman, a triple from Aguilar made it 83-68, icing the game with 4 minutes to go. Before game’s end, Newley hit Gran Canaria’s 17th three-pointer of the night, and also scored the final basket of the game to round things out at 20 points, the largest margin of the contest.

Head Coaches

GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
“Our team played a great game and I think it was a great show for the fans because this team works so much. The most important thing is that we attacked well their main virtue, that is the full-court defense with traps. By the way, we had a very good passing between our players to create good shots from the outside.”

Players

SAVANE, SITAPHA
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
“We feel great because of the score and our form. We solved the game against a team that we knew would create problems for us. It was another game where everyone participated and that is important for all the players, because every day we can shoot different from another.”
