The Take

With both of Group I's games scheduled for Tuesday, EWE Baskets Oldenburg (2-1) hosts PAOK Thessaloniki (1-2), hoping for a series sweep. Despite losing its three Eurocup home games, Oldenburg has excelled on the road, where it has won four of its last five. Last week, Oldenburg downed PAOK 68-81 as Chris Kramer had 8 steals, a Last 32 all-time record. PAOK, which has not played on German soil in more than a decade, hopes to cut down on its 17 turnovers per game, the most in the Last 32, to give itself a better chance to win. A little later Tuesday, French champion Limoges CSP (1-2) hosts Valencia Basket (2-1) in a much-anticipated rematch. Last week, in the debut of new head coach Dusko Vujosevic, Limoges defeated Valencia 72-92, and now aims to repeat this performance. Valencia suffered its first loss of the season last week, but is still unbeaten in six Eurocup games away from home. Despite last week's loss, Valencia still averages 86 points in the Last 32 – ranking sixth – and has nine players scoring 7.3 points per contest.

Quotes Head Coaches

DRIJENCIC, MLADEN
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"We will face a more difficult game than last week. With Schortsanitis on the floor, PAOK will have another dimension, so we have to prepare for different styles of play with him on an off the court. We need to control Schortsanitis and the outside shooting. Hopefully the support of our fans will give us additional energy."
MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"It's going to be a very difficult game for us, against a team that actually edged us with comfort last week in our home court and now we are in a very tough position in the group due to that result. We need to remain very focused in our game, not allow them to run the court and especially not allow them open court. It’s also important to bring the game inside the post and fight personal battles. If we fail to do that and the game goes according to the rhythm our opponent wants to set, then things are going to get tougher and our chances will diminish."

Players

MARKOVIC, NIKOLA
PAOK Thessaloniki
"We need to have a better approach to our game, especially in defense and play smarter than we did in our home game one week ago. I think that the game shall be decided by the defense. After our loss in Thessaloniki we are at a disadvantage, but we still have a chance to qualify and we want to build on it with a victory in Germany. We simply need to play up to our potential, play our game and not show the face we showed in our last two games, but rather the one we did in the previous two ones."

EWE Baskets Oldenburg sweeps PAOK and climbs atop Group I

EWE Baskets Oldenburg completed sweep of PAOK Thessaloniki with an 83-71 victory to climb atop the Group I standings with a 3-1 record. PAOK fell to 1-3 and last place in the group standings. PAOK was in the game for the first quarter and a half and led by 2 on an Apollon Tsochlas triple, but the hosts scored the last 8 points of the half to lead 48-39. Chris Kramer scored 8 in a 13-0 third-quarter run that took the difference into the 20s and the lead eventually peaked at 27 in the fourth quarter before Oldenburg eased up down the stretch. Kramer finished with 23 points and 5 assists, while Rickey Paulding, Nemanaja Aleksandrov and Vaughn Duggins scored 12 points each. Nikola Markovic paced PAOK with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Uros Duvnjak also scored 11 and Will Hatcher and Kostas Vasileiadis netted 10 apiece in defeat.

Paulding started the scoring for the home team with a pair of three-pointers sandwiched around a Sofoklis Schortsanitis free throw. Hatcher reeled off 5 straight points before Vasileiadis put PAOK ahead 6-8. Hatcher kept the visitors in front with 4 more points. Kramer and Duggins tied it and after Duvnjak and Aleksandrov traded threes, the first quarter ended at 24-24. Aleksandrov started the second quarter with a triple and Duggins’s steal led to a Kramer layup. Tsochlas scored 5 in a row to close the gap and Schortsanitis’s put-back gave PAOK a 32-33 edge. Tsochlas added a triple to put the visitors ahead by 2, but Philipp Schwethelm and Paulding reacted with back-to-back threes. After Vasileiadis connected from downtown to draw PAOK within 40-39, Paulding drained his fourth three, then stole the ball and set up Kramer for a layup before Jan Wimberg’s triple made it 48-39 at the break.

Despite a pair of Schortsanitis baskets early in the second half, Kramer heated up and extended the Oldenburg advantage. Kramer scored 8 in a 13-0 run that made it 66-43. Kostas Kakaroudis hit a three to keep PAOK alive, but a three by Schwethelm gave the home team a 74-49 advantage through three quarters. Oldenburg’s lead peaked at 27 points (76-49) after a Kramer free throw early in the fourth quarter. Markovic stood out for PAOK, but his best efforts were not enough to get the visitors back in the game. Duvnjak brought the deficit into the teens and Michail Liapis chiseled it down to 12, however the outcome was never in doubt as Oldenburg chalked up an important win.

"For about 30 minutes, the fans saw a great game from both teams. We deserved this win because we were well-prepared. We controlled the key players like Will Hatcher and Sofoklis Schortsanitis, too. Robin Smeulders and Dennis Kramer did a great job. I´m very satisfied that we have the quality to be with the best teams in the Eurocup. "
MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"Congratulations to Oldenburg. They played better and deserved this win. We started good and controlled the game. But after a while we made some wrong decisions und lost confidence. In the third quarter, Oldenburg played great… and we lost the game."
