ALBA Berlin rallies past Reggio Emilia

ALBA Berlin earned its first win of the Eurocup season with a come-from-behind 82-76 victory over Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia on Tuesday at Mercedes-Benz Arena. The hosts trailed by 10 in the third quarter before turning things around. Dragan Milosavljevic was 9 for 9 from the foul line and finished with 17 points for the winners. Will Cherry added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, while Kresimir Loncar scored 11 and Jordan Taylor 10. Achille Polonara paced Reggio Emilia with 19 points and 8 rebounds, Pietro Aradori scored 17 and Amedeo Della Valle had 13 in defeat. Reggio Emilia made 66.7% of its two-point shots, but ALBA outrebounded Reggio Emilia 43-24, including 18-5 on the offensive glass.

Mitchell Watt scored first for ALBA, but Reggio Emilia responded with 7 straight points, the last ones coming on a triple by Polonara. Ojars Silins made it 4-10 and a second Polonara three pushed the difference to 7, but an Alex King three put ALBA back on track. Niels Giffey closed the gap to 2 before Andrea De Nicolao scored for Reggio Emilia to end the quarter with the visitors up 16-20. The teams traded baskets for the first few minutes of the second quarter. Milosavljevic free throws drew the hosts within 1 before back-to-back baskets by Aradori and Polonara made it 24-29. Aradori scored 10 points in the span of three minutes and then Polonara’s third three of the game gave Reggio Emilia a 29-37 advantage. After Milosavljevic and Polonara traded threes, Taylor drew a foul shooting a three, netted the resulting free throws and closed the gap to 40-45 at the break.

Reggio Emilia further extended its lead by scoring the first 5 points of the second half for a double-digit advantage. Watt scored twice inside in a 9-0 run that carried ALBA back into the game. The teams traded baskets until Cherry drilled a three to tie the game at 56-56. Giffey soon gave ALBA its first lead since the opening minutes, but Polonara’s tip-in at the third-quarter buzzer tied the game at 61-61. Della Valle started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, but ALBA regained the lead on a Watt’s tip-in. Milosavljevic added 3 free throws to make it 72-68 midway through the quarter. Then a Cherry triple combined with ALBA defense that limited its opponents to a single free throw over the next three minutes all but sealed the outcome. It was 78-69 after Milosavljevic free throws with two minutes to go. Cherry boosted the difference to 11 before a late basket by Darjus Lavrinovic and a Della Valle three set the final difference at 6.

"I am very happy for this win because we beat a big team that had not lost till now - including wins over the two Italian Euroleague teams, Sassari and Milan. It is not easy to play them as every player is a threat and everyone can score. We still made many mistakes today, but in the second half we finally found good energy and started to play our game. In the end we did not finish very clever, but most important is the win, which should be a great impulse for my new team."
MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"This was a nice game for fans to watch as both teams played for the win till the end. We played great for the first 20 minutes, putting ALBA in trouble with our ball-movement. In the second half we had problems attacking the physical defense ALBA played. It also hurt us that we were missing our best player at the moment, Rimantas Kaukenas, but I am still happy because we played a good game and kept the score difference little."
