CEZ Basketball Nymburk climbed out of an early hole to defeat visiting EWE Baskets Oldenburg 77-71 on Tuesday. The victory was Nymburk’s first in Group C, while EWE Baskets dropped to 0-2. The hosts trailed 10-27 in the second quarter before Tre Simmons sparked a 14-2 run that brought Nymburk within 32-35 at halftime. Darius gave Nymburk the lead in the third quarter and Coach Kestutis Kemzura’s men held strong down the stretch. Petr Benda led the winners with 15 points, Washington scored 14, Pavel Houska and Simmons netted 13 apiece and Rado Rancik had 11. Rickey Paulding led the Oldenburg attack with 18 points and Adam Chubb tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.

After Rancik scored on the hosts’ first possession, Paulding put EWE Baskets on top with 5 straight points. Chubb dominated on the glass and a second Paulding triple gave the visitors a 4-14 lead. Simmons and Jiri Welsch chipped away at the Nymburk deficit, but back-to-back threes by Julius Jenkins and Dominic Lockhart gave Oldenburg a double-digit advantage that held up at the end of the quarter, 10-20. Jenkins connected again from deep to cap a 0-7 start to the second quarter for a 17-point lead. Houska and Welsch scored on the offensive glass, but Paulding had Oldenburg cruising at 18-33 midway through the corner. Welsch and Houska closed the gap to 10 and the momentum remained with the hosts. Simmons added a steal and layup and finished the half with a triple and a jumper to complete a 14-2 charge – in which he accounted for 7 points and 2 assists – to close the gap to 32-35.

The teams traded baskets early in the third quarter with Washington starting to heat up. His triple brought Nymburk within 39-40 and he later gave the Czech champs their first lead since the opening minutes. The lead proceeded to change hands seven times before back-to-back threes by Washington and Rancik made it 53-48. Simmons extended the difference to 58-50 before Phillip Zwiener countered with a three to keep Oldenburg within 5 at the end of the quarter. Simmons pushed the hosts to 65-56 early in the fourth, but Paulding hit from downtown to keep EWE Baskets in the picture. Chub free throws made it 68-63 with three minutes to go. Benda scored on back-to-back possessions before fouling out and Nymburk matched Oldenburg down the stretch to hold on for the win.

KEMZURA, KESTUTIS
CEZ Basketball Nymburk
"The beginning was terrible. Really slow even. We talked about being ready and focused for the intensive game. But we didn’t execute anything that we talked about before the game. Sprinting back, defending three-pointers, running fast breaks. We dribbled too much and looked really bad. It seemed like not Oldenburg, but that we travelled 10 hours to the game. Then we tried to do some things differently, we tried to mix up some things, change the rhythm of the game. We used zone defense, which worked well tonight and it helped us. I thing we also got a little bit lucky because they missed quick shots, we grabbed rebounds and ran back. In the third quarter we started more focused. Also on the offensive end we found what worked for us."
MACHOWSKI, SEBASTIAN
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"Congratulation to coach Kemzura and his team for this deserved win. Even though we had a great start of the game, we couldn´t keep defensive intensity and offensive rhythm longer than for 15 minutes. Around halftime it seemed to be an open game. But Nymburk took the lead. We didn´t manage to find our offensive rhythm, which would be necessary to eventually win this game. Even though we tried to do different things, we were not successful. Even though we had some open looks inside and open three-point shots, we couldn´t knock them down. That’s how we lost this game."
