The Take

On Tuesday, Szolnoki Olaj (0-1) welcomes former two-time Eurocup champion Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (0-1). Rytas is winless in three consecutive Eurocup games dating back to last season, and aims to snap the streak against the Hungarian champion. Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul (1-0) hosts Avtodor Saratov (0-1) while hoping to continue its three-game home winning streak against Russian teams. In the past two seasons, Besiktas has beaten on its home floor Nizhny Novgorod, Khimki Moscow Region and Zenit St. Petersburg, and intends to add Avtodor to the list. Meanwhile, Zenit St. Petersburg (1-0) and hot-shooting Ryan Toolson welcome PAOK Thessaloniki (1-0). Toolson hit 8 triples in the season opener. At the very least the visitors will try stop the trend of big losses in Russia, as PAOK has been defeated by at least 19 points in every road game against Russian opponents since 1999.

Quotes Head Coaches

ALEKSIC, DRAGAN
Szolnoki Olaj
"Our next opponent is a very experienced team that features a couple of Lithuanian national players. After their defeat at the first round I am pretty sure that they will be very motivated against us. The level of play is high at Lietuvos rytas, we respect them, but we shall not respect them too much. We want to win all of our home games, that is out of question."

Players

VOJVODA, DAVID
Szolnoki Olaj
"We are looking for a tough battle. Our rival plays in a very psychical way, they are not afraid of heavy contacts. Lithuanian basketball is on a different level to Hungary's, their results in Olympic games and European Championship speak for themselves. This is a rare occasion for our supporters to see a quality opponent in Szolnok."

Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius roars past Szolnoki Olaj

Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius stormed past Szolnoki Olaj 65-89 Tuesday for its first win of the new Eurocup season. Rytas improved to 1-1 in Group E, while keeping Szolnoki winless. Deividas Gailius paced the Rytas attack with 19 points, Gediminas Orelik added 16, Nicolas Laprovittola scored 13 and Rokas Giedraitis 10, while Arturas Gugaitis grabbed 10 rebounds and Mindaugas Lukauskas dished 8 assists. Kyryl Natyazhko led Szolnoki with 16 points and 8 rebounds, David Vojvoda scored 14, Strahinja Milosevic 11 and Akos Keller posted 10 points and 8 boards. Szolnoki was undone by its 19 turnovers and making only 8 of 18 free throws.

Lukauskas scored the game’s first points for Rytas from the line before Dino Gregory got the hosts on the scoreboard. Threes by Gailius and Orelik gave the visitors the lead, but Keller and Vojvoda tied it at 8-8. Gailius and Laprovittola scored to put Rytas back in front. Ksistof Lavrinovic and Arturas Gudaitis added to the difference for a 12-21 Rytas lead after 10 minutes. Back-to-back threes by Giedraitis and Laprovittola to start the second quarter pushed the difference to 15. Milosevic’s basket and Keller’s put-back were not enough to spark a Szolnoki rally. The teams traded points until the break, with Rytas holding a comfortable lead. A Marius Runkauskas triple gave the visitors a 28-46 halftime lead.

Gailius extended the difference to 20 early in the second half. He then posted a three-point play as Rytas faced little resistance. Gailius then capped a 0-12 run that made it 35-68. Szolnoki fought back to 52-76 on a Natyazhko basket to end the third quarter. Natyazhko added a triple and Milosevic scored 4 in a 9-0 fourth-quarter run that made it 62-80, but that was as close as the hosts would get as Rytas cruised to victory.

Head Coaches

ALEKSIC, DRAGAN
Szolnoki Olaj
"Have to congratulate to Vilnius, they played strong, fast and on a high level that we could not produce. They destroyed our offense with sharp defence after they started the game really well. They were as good as a Euroleague team and we cannot play at that level yet. I am really disappointed, it seems that we are not ready for this league yet. "
NICOLA, MARCELO
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"We started the game as we should have and got an early lead that set the tone for us. We played excellent defense, made our threes and shared the ball; we had 23 assists, which is remarkable. "

Players

WITTMANN, KRISZTIAN
Szolnoki Olaj
"Lietuvos Rytas played fantastic tonight, we have to congratulate them, they were the deserved winners. We missed open shots and a lot of free throws. The positive side of this loss that after we fell 30 points behind, we didn’t gave up to lose by 40-something; we came back. This intensity is too quick and strong for us. "
GAILIUS, DEIVIDAS
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"After we made a good start, Szolnok hesitated and we capitalised on their mistakes. After the way we lost the opening game in the first round, we wanted to show that we are a much better team and make up for the defeat. "
