THE TAKE

Lukoil Academic of Bulgaria will host undefeated Group B leader Gescrap Bilbao in Week 3. A win for the hosts would let it tie Bilbao for first place in the group, while another victory by the visitors would be a big step for them on the road to the next round. There are two tandems going up against one another under the glass, with Mohamed Aboukar and Darryl Watkins combining for 33.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per night so far, while Lamont Hamilton and Axel Hervelle of Bilbao amass 25.5 points and 15 boards per game. In the backcourts, the host has Brandon Heat and Bozidhar Avramov to contend with the visitor’s Nikos Zisis and Kostas Vasiliadis, plus there are some quality bench players who could have major impact: for Lukoil, Todor Stoykov and Pavel Marinov; for Bilbao, Roger Grimau and Milovan Rakovic. It will be a big battle, in which details will make the difference at the top of Group B.

Quotes Head Coaches

DOKUZOVSKI, MARIN
Lukoil Academic Sofia
"The team of Bilbao is an absolute favorite, not just for this game against us in Bulgaria, but for each game in our group. They are a very strong squad, they are coming from an excellent league like teh ACB and last season they played in Euroleague. I don't think we can find a better motivation to play and prove what we can. I expect an interesting game, in which we must fight for each basket under the boards and to show our great desire to succeed in the tournament. Bilbao use their strength in the low post, where they have great forwards and tall guys. We must be ready for their aggressive style and we need to have an answer in rebounds. I think we are ready and I hope my team will demonstrate a high devotion for the game against the Spaniards on Wednesday."
KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Uxue Bilbao Basket
"It is a very good team, as we showed in the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds, which was eliminated by Cantu due to small details. He is talented and well balanced. Collective work is important and if we win in Sofia while the group can control."

Players

ABUKAR, MOHAMED
Lukoil Academic Sofia
"We missed a great opportunity to win in Podgorica and it's a pity, because that was a chance to face Bilbao on Wednesday after two big victories in the group. Now we are focused and ready to be back on the winning track. We know what we can do on the court and it depends only on us what will be the result in our next game. Bilbao is a big challenge for each team in Europe, they have a lot of experience and we must give more than 100% to beat them. I hope the fans will come to support us, they are important part of our way of success."
GRIMAU, ROGER
Uxue Bilbao Basket
"We know that Lukoil Academic will cause more problems than the Spirou Charleroi. We do not know a lot about our opponents. We have seen a video of the game with the Belgians and they seem a better team, but we have not studied them yet. We hope to extend our winning streak, but above all the most important thing is not to let our current good dynamics go. Sure you lose some games but, regardless of winning or losing, there is good chemistry and you have to try to keep the level of play."
Lamont Hamilton - Gescrap Bilbao Basket - EC (photo Lukoil Academic)Gescrap Bilbao Basket ended the first leg of the Regular Season on a high note on Wednesday night thanks to a 64-85 road win at Lukoil Academic Sofia. The win leaves Gescrap undefeated with a 3-0 record for sole possession of Group B leadership, while Lukoil drops to 1-2. A solid defense in the third and fourth periods allowed the guests to keep building a strong lead that was unsurmountable for Lukoil in the end, despite its good start to the game. Lamont Hamilton led the winners with his 19 points, Kostas Vasileiadis added 15, Alex Mumbru had 13 points and 8 assists and FRan Pilepic posted 10. For Lukoil, Devin Green had 13 points plus 11 rebounds, Mohamed Abukar added 11 and Darryl Watkins contributed 10.

Two straight threes by Alex Mumbru and Axel Hervelle put Gescrap Bilbao Basket soon up by 0-6. However, Lukoil Academic Sofia didn't panic and, little by little, regrouped until two free throws by Devin Green managed to tie the game at 10-10 in minute 5 and then make it 11-10 for the hosts. A slam also by Green even made it 15-10 to complete a 10-0 run for Lukoil. Mumbru and Hervelle were the most active players for the guests, and between them, Bilbao was back to the fight for 19-21 after Mumbru's layup. Mohamed Abukar, the other offensive force in Lukoil during the first quarter, was the one to put the final touch to the score after 10 minutes, 25-23 for the hosts. Tencho Banev's three-point play helped neutralize the first bucket by Mumbru in the second quarter. Neither team managed to have a solid margin during the rest of the second period, and there were several lead changes. With both teams tied in turnovers (6-6) and assists (10-10) after 20 minutes, it would come to the better performance from the arc by Bilbao to give them the slim edge at the break, 42-43, as Lamont Hamilton was up to 13 points already.

The third period saw Gescrap start with a 0-7 including a three by Kostas Vasileiadis that made it 42-50. Hamilton soon joined the party to slam the ball and Green stopped the bleeding from the arc with a three for the 45-52. However, Bilbao tightened its defense on the hosts and soon was increasing the gap with Mumbru, Hervelle and Vasileiadis still adding points and Milovan Rakovic slamming for the 47-57. Lukoil was simply stopped as Nikos Zisis hit a layup for the 51-64 after 30 minutes. The last period also started with a 1-5 Bilbao run capped by Roger Grimau's free throw for 52-69. Banev was trying to keep Lukoil in the game, but Zisis and Hamilton blasted straight threes for the guests for a 57-75 with five minutes to go. Fran Pilepic kept the fire alive for Bilbao while Abukar and Green desperately tried to maintain Lukoil's hopes. However, the clock was ticking away and when Vasileiadis blasted a new three for 61-81 150 seconds to go, the guests started celebrating the third win of the season.

Head Coaches

DOKUZOVSKI, MARIN
Lukoil Academic Sofia
"A team plays as much as it is being allowed to, by its opposing team. Bilbao played high quality basketball for 40 minutes and they played even better as we went further into the game. On the other hand, our team went down physically and psychologically in the second half. Our concentration also went down following halftime. Bilbao has 10 good players and they play in a much stronger domestic league. In the second half, they played significantly more aggressive defense. They also changed their defense and our players were unable to adapt to it. We don’t have these kinds of games with such aggressive defense in our local championship."
KATSIKARIS, FOTIOS
Uxue Bilbao Basket
"We were ready for a tough game; Lukoil is a very good team. We didn’t play that well on defense in the first half. We didn’t play hard on the defensive side and we were unable to fill in the gaps in their defense. We allowed them to score 42 points by halftime, which is a lot for our team. In the second half we were more focused. We did our best to play as good as possible on defense and we were in control of the rebounding. We made fewer mistakes and we won the game. I don’t want my players to think that we’ll have an easy game playing at home. I want to keep the same concentration level."
