Unbeaten Bayern cruises past Podgorica

FC Bayern Munich returns home from the Montenegrin capital with sole possession of first place in Group B after defeating Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 60-76 in a battle of two previously unbeaten teams on Wednesday night. Bayern improved to 4-0 on the season, while Buducnost dropped to 3-1. In a packed Moraca Arena, Bayern pulled away in the second quarter when Devin Booker scored 11 points in a span of four minutes to lead the visitors to a double-digit margin. A 0-9 run early in the third opened an 18-point margin and Bayern never looked back. Booker finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds, Nihad Dedovic had 13 points, Milan Macvan scored 11, and Miak Zirbes added 10 in victory. Kyle Landry collected 15 points plus 9 rebounds for the hosts and Kyle Gibson netted 13 in defeat.

Buducnost started red-hot from long range, with Gibson, Suad Sehovic and Nemanja Gordic all connecting once from downtown, with Sehovic’s being a four-point play. Landry’s mid-range basket made it 12-5, but Bayern quickly caught up. Reggie Redding drove the baseline and Zirbes had a dunk and a put-back, helping make it 18-18 after 10 minutes. Petar Popovic opened the second quarter with a runner for the hosts, but Dedovic answered with a triple to give Bayern its first lead of the night, 20-21. Bayern’s defense forced Buducnost far away from the hoop, and Dedovic’s driving layup sparked a 0-11 run, during which Booker had a three-point play and an alley-oop dunk. Buducnost was held scoreless for almost four minutes, before Nikola Ivanovic had a three-point play to end the drought. But Booker made a long baseline jumper, and a dunk, as the margin was extended to 14 points, before Bayern went into halftime up 29-41.

Gibson opened the second half with a three-pointer, but Jared Cunningham scored 5 points, Macvan scored inside and fed Danilo Barthel for a dunk and a 32-50 lead after only three minutes in the third quarter. Landry scored 9 points, a three-point play and a pair of corner three-pointers, single-handedly halving the deficit to 45-53. But Dedovic sparked Bayern’s offense once again, and Anton Gavel’s triple made it 46-61 at the end of three quarters. Braydon Hobbs opened the final quarter with a three to restore an 18-point margin, and Dedovic’s fastbreak layup broke the 20-point barrier, 46-66. Bayern cruised the rest of the way. Gibson had a four-point play, and Gordic scored a fastbreak layup that made it 58-70, but Macvan replied with a three-point play to keep the hosts at bay with three minutes to go and seal the outcome.

"Bayern is a better team than us, there is no doubt about it. We tried to do our best at this moment. The first quarter was okay on our part ,but our level dropped in the second and they pulled away. And the rest of the game was them keep that margin. We had a good number of open shots, but we simply did not hit them. I can’t even say we forced shots. We did not hit them, shots which we were hitting earlier. They are really good. Bayern is specific in the way how they can switch players in their front line, where they switch their players at positions four and five. That created problems for us, especially with Ilic missing the game due to injury. In general, I am not unsatisfied. There were things that were really good, things we have to work on, but they are a really good team. Thanks to the crowd which packed Moraca."

"It is an important win for us in an early stage of the competition. We played a good game, defensively tough. We knew the strong sides of Buducnost, but we controlled the game and had initiative most of the night. It was a win by our defense. We can do better offensively, but we will need time for that. We pushed them away from the basket, and in the second quarter with a lot of points in transition we built a lead that gave us security and strength for the rest of the game. Thanks to the crowd in the arena for the atmosphere. "

"We surely could have done more. We will see what we did bad. Bayern played a really good game, they were tougher than us. We were not ourselves, but there is not much time to pout and think about it. "
