The Take

Eurocup newcomer Trabzonspor Medical Park (1-1) hosts Buducnost VOLI Podgorica (1-1) in an intriguing encounter of two teams meeting for the first time ever. Historically, Buducnost has not had much success on Turkish soil, holding a 9-2 all-time record after having lost the last seven games in that country. Its last win in Turkey came in 1999. Unics Kazan (2-0) welcomes Aris Thessaloniki (1-1) for their first battle in 16 years. No Eurocup team has been as dominant in the first two weeks as Unics, which ranks third in scoring with 89.5 points per game. Another newcomer, Steaua CSM Eximbank Bucharest (1-1) will go for its second consecutive home win against last year's semifinalist Banvit Bandirma (0-2), whose point guard A.J. Slaughter was the top scorer in Round 2 with 29 points against Unics. However, the visitors are still winless despite being the best offensive rebounding team in the competition, pulling down 18.5 of their own misses per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"Aris is a very serious opponent. There are good Americans and experienced Greek players in their roster. The team plays well-organized basketball. Generally speaking, our task is to improve on our game every time we go out on court, and play to win. To win in this game we shall play defensively, like we did against Avtodor in the VTB United League during three quarters. We shall fight for every inch of the court, do not let opponents make open shots, move the ball fast so that when the ball is in play all our players should be in as well, which will also give our leaders opportunity to show their strong sides."
PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
Aris Thessaloniki
"We are prepared for a tough game. It’s clear that we have very difficult task in Russia, facing one of the favorites to win the Eurocup. Unics Kazan is a Euroleague level team. We will fight to gain what we can from this match. Furthermore, playing two games each week, we try to improve as a team. We want to be competitive against Unics and to do that, we must control the rhythm and limit the productivity of the opponent as much as we can."

Players

KAIMAKOGLOU, KOSTAS
Unics Kazan
"The game against Aris will be very important for us. We will play at home and we would very much like to continue on our winning path. We will play a good team with good chemistry. They have some new American players in their roster and a Greek guy. They are very experienced, they know how to play basketball, and they created a good team with good energy. Until now they show a very good game. In Eurocup they have recently defeated Buducnost at home, and in the Greek League, have just had a big game against PAOK. We will be ready for the big challenge and will give our best to win."
PELEKANOS, MICHALIS
Aris Thessaloniki
"We come from three consecutive wins, two in the Greek league and one on the second day of the Eurocup. We showed that we have found our pace and as the games go through, I think will continually improve. We have a difficult game against Unics. It’s a team with a strong and experienced roster and the big favorite to win first place in our group. The fact that we play on their home court makes our task even more difficult, however, this doesn’t mean that we intend to surrender without a fight. We will fight with all our strength for a surprise victory."

Aris escapes from Kazan with thrilling overtime win

Aris Thessaloniki claimed a big upset by escaping from Kazan with an overtime 73-74 victory over Unics in Group D on Wednesday. Now Unics and Aris have the same 2-1 records to share first place in the group with Trabzonspor Medical Park. Kostas Kaimakoglou forced the game to an extra session by scoring a deep three at the buzzer to tie it at 64-64 after Aris lead for all of the fourth quarter. The lead changed hands seven times during overtime, the last when Jerel McNeal hit a jumper to make it 73-74 with a minute left and eventually give the win to the visitors. McNeal was the main contributor for the winners with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Jamelle Hagins added 16 points and Okaro White and Dominic Waters scored 10 each. Keith Langford netted 19 points for Unics, Kaimakoglou posted 14 points and 8 boards, Quino Colom totalled 12 points with 8 assists and Arturas Milaknis chipped in 11 in defeat.

McNeal scored from long distance for the only basket of the first five minutes before the Unics attack started to catch fire with Arturas Milaknis and Valeriy Likhodey giving the hosts a 9-5 margin. Milaknis and Kaimakoglou scored for Unics, while a three by Jake Cohen fixed the score at 15-14 for the home team after 10 minutes. Cohen put the visitors in front 17-18. Kaimakogou and Petr Gubanov pushed Unics to a 23-18 lead. Hagins came through with 4 points in a row for a 24-26 Aris lead. The score was tied twice, before Milaknis and McNeal exchanged threes to finish 31-31 at halftime.

Michalis Pelekanos completed from long distance a 7-0 run for Aris to open the third quarter at 31-38. Latavious Williams and McNeal fueled the respective sides and Colom brought Unics within 41-45. Spyrous Mourtos with a long three inspired the guests to finish the third quarter up 42-50. Hagins pushed the difference to 44-52 three minutes into the quarter. Then Aris held a slim margin fueled by White with 5 consecutive points, 55-61. Colom carried Unics within 60-61, but Dominic Waters used an offensive rebound grabbed by Hagins for an easy basket to lead 60-63. He then scored 1 of 2 free throws with 4 seconds left before Kaimakoglou tied the game with an incredible three at the buzzer. Langford put Unics in front early in the extra session, 66-65, and then Kaimakoglou gave a 71-67 edge to Unics, before Pelekanos cut the deficit from downtown and McNeal from mid-range scored what proved to be the game-winner with a minute left.

"Aris Thessaloniki earned this win. We did not show enough in defense, we did not move the ball enough in the third quarter. We evidently wanted to take this game via our class. It turned out that the game did not go the way we planned. Our defense was not that effective and even a wide rotation did not break the unhappy line for us. Players started to make mistakes. We lacked concentration in overtime and our mistakes allowed our opponents to celebrate the win."
PRIFTIS, DIMITRIS
Aris Thessaloniki
This is a very important road win for us. Unics is a very good team, very difficult to play against; they usually play well in defense, and it is very difficult to make them concede more than 60 points. This evening we scored 64 points in regular time. It was very important for us that we did not let our opponents shoot easy shots. Our mistake in the fourth quarter brought the game into overtime, but in the decisive moments we pulled ourselves together and won.
