The Take

Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (1-1) hosts Avtodor Saratov (1-1), a newcomer that is also the highest scoring team in the competition so far, with 94 points per game. But offensive-minded Rytas is not far behind, ranking fifth with 88 points thanks in part to its 22 assists per night, second best through two games, and 10.5 three-pointers, third best. In a battle of black-and-whites, PAOK Thessaloniki (1-1) welcomes Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul (1-1). Both teams are coming off losses. Although Besiktas already has a road win this season, it also has allowed the most points in the first two Eurocup rounds. Hungarian champion Szolnoki Olaj (0-2) hosts Zenit St. Petersburg (2-0) for the second year in a row. The two teams beat each other at home last season. Szolnoki's 96-94 win over Zenit in Round 1 last season was the club's first Eurocup victory ever. This time, Szolnoki enters this contest as the lowest-scoring offense in the competition, while Zenit is one of eight undefeated teams.

Quotes Head Coaches

MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
"Besiktas is a team with very good players, experienced, that have played the Euroleague, like Darden and Lampe, but in general they are a team with a powerful roster and high level players. I don’t know what the change of the coach is going to bring for them on the floor. In any case, we want to be competitive, to maintain our rhythm and control all the important situations during the game, imposing our game."

Players

TSOCHLAS, APOLLON
PAOK Thessaloniki
"We need to return to winning and tomorrow’s game is a chance to recover and gain in confidence. Besiktas has a very full roster, they have Euroleague level players, we have watched them on video, pinpointed their weak spots and we need to attack those to win tomorrow. They’ve been having a lot of ups and downs with their performance, we know they have changed their coach, but we don’t know how this is going to affect them and the changes it’s going to bring to their style of playing. We need to play tough in defense and remain extremely focused during the entire game."

Lampe, Wolters lift Besiktas past PAOK

Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul moved up to 2-1 in Group E by downing PAOK Thessaloniki 80-100 in Greece on Wednesday. Nate Wolters paced the winners with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Maciej Lampe added 18 points and 15 rebounds, Erik Murphy had 15 points, Cenk Akyol and Engin Atsur each got 12 while Tremmell Darden contributed 10 in a big win for Besiktas. Nikola Markovic led PAOK with 17 points. William Hatcher added 15, Milenko Tepic had 14 while Kostas Vasileiadis got 11 for the hosts. Besiktas had 10-of-17 three-point shots and four players in double digits before halftime, with Lampe getting his double-double - 10 points, 10 rebounds - in the 11th minute of the game. Besiktas led 14-27 after 10 minutes and boosted its margin to 28-55 at halftime. PAOK managed to get within 57-66 but Atsur, Lampe and an outstanding Wolters stepped up to seal the outcome way before the final buzzer.

Wolters scored off a steal and Lampe soon gave Besiktas a 2-4 lead. Markovic and Evangelos Margaritis stepped up for PAOK, bringing the hosts within 8-9. Besiktas kept running its offense through a dominant Lampe, who got help from Darden and Murphy to make it a double-digit game, 8-18. Walters capped an 0-11 Besiktas run, as Tepic brought PAOK within 10-20. Lampe struck from downtown, igniting a 0-7 run which Murphy capped with a close basket. Tepic kept PAOK within 14-27 after 10 minutes. A red hot Lampe struck twice from downtown and fed Akyol for a layup to make Besiktas break the game open, 16-35, early in the second quarter. Wolters joined the three-point shootout and found help from D.J. Seeley to make it a 25-point game, 18-43. Tepic kept pacing PAOK with free throws but Akyol took over with consecutive three-pointers and Murphy added another one to give the guests a 28-55 margin at halftime.

Murphy and Darden kept Besiktas way ahead, 31-58, early in the fourth quarter. PAOK found a go-to guy in Vasileiadis, who struck twice from downtown in an 8-0 run that brought the hosts a bit closer, 39-58. Wolters insisted from downtown but PAOK kept finding good options on offense. Hatcher and Markovic combined for 8 points in another 10-0 run which brought the hosts back to life, 49-61. Atsur hit one from beyond the arc but Hatcher and Markovic answered from downtown to get PAOK within single digits, 57-66. Akyol and an unstoppable Wolters gave Besiktas some fresh air, 61-72, after 30 minutes. Lampe and Wolters kept leading Besiktas early in the fourth quarter but a three-pointer by Georgios Dedas kept PAOK as close as 65-76. Atsur stepped up with consecutive triples in an 0-8 run that sealed the outcome, 65-84, with 6 minutes left. Hatcher, Vasileadis and Kostas Kakaroudis brought PAOK within 76-89 but it was too little, too late for the hosts, as Besiktas had cruised to a well-deserved win.

Head Coaches

MARKOPOULOS, SOULIS
PAOK Thessaloniki
“We had to face a very good team with experienced players, some of whom were from the Euroleague, and after starting the game in a bad way, they got such a big lead in the first half. I don’t think that the way we played was a mental issue because it could have affected us mentally in the second half, but it didn’t. We are in a very tough group. This loss holds us back but we still have a long way to go.”
ULUG, YAGIZER HAMDI
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
“I’ve only been the coach of the team for a few hours. I basically had two full practices with the team and I tried to change some things on both defense and offense. I think that we did some things differently, we based the game around our players’ personality and we got a very big lead. PAOK’s reaction in the second half was natural, as was their cutting of the deficit, but we managed to react correctly and got a big win.”

Players

MARKOVIC, NIKOLA
PAOK Thessaloniki
“We came into the game without trying too hard, especially on defense. They have very experienced players that know how to capitalize on such opportunities, and get a big lead. We made a great effort in the second half, we managed to cut down the deficit, but it ultimately wasn’t enough for us to win the game.”
SEELEY, D.J.
Besiktas Sompo Japan Istanbul
“We had a very good start to the game, playing tough defense and moving the ball in offense. The best part was that we played very aggressive defense and that was the key that opened up the game for us and then everything was easy.”
