Quotes Head Coaches

STELMAHERS, ROBERTS
Ventspils
"We faced Karsiyaka two seasons ago during the FIBA EuroChallenge Cup. I have to say for sure that this team hasn’t become weaker after our last encounter on court. Karsiyaka has won the Turkish SuperCup, it is the leader of the national championship. This achievement doesn’t require any additional comments. They have very good foreign players, they are playing big minutes. This Turkish club is made of good and very well experienced players. They play fast and aggressive basketball, we have to be patient, and we have to try to enforce our style of the game on them. Their leader Dixon is very fast and aggressive players, he makes on average 17 shots per game, shoots from the distance, and goes in transition. He is the kind of a player who if allowed would win a game singlehandedly. Palacios is great help to him, last season he played for Lietuvas Rytas, he is a high-quality player, Diebler, too, is with a very good shot. They are a very strong team but we are not afraid, we know that can win this team."

MEIERS, MARTINS
Ventspils
"I remember those games from two years ago, but this time around both teams are different. The rosters of both teams have changed. Yes, the Turkish players are older, stronger and more experienced, but I don’t think that is major plus for them. Yes, we are quite the youngster team and a lot of our players don’t have Eurocup experience, but we have a brave heart, big vigour to fight, and if we concentrate solely on the game and we fight until the very last second of the game, then we can win them and every other rival. We have gained some experience from the game against Lokomotiv, whom we could have beat, but we lacked the experience to finish some vital episodes, we became nervous and didn’t believe in ourselves. The main thing for us is that we can’t stop, no matter who we face on the court, we have to play and fight until the end, and that is half way to victory."

Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir left Latvia with a 72-81 victory over Ventspils to raise its record to 2-1 to join PAOK Thessaloniki in second place in Group F. The hosts dropped to 1-2. Karsiyaka used an 11-0 second-quarter run to take the first big lead, 20-34. The visitors stretched it to 20 points in the third on a Jon Diebler triple and controlled the game in the final 10 minutes. Juan Palacios amassed 18 points and 10 rebounds, Kenny Gabriel added 18 points on 6-of-7 two-point shooting and 8 rebounds, and Bobby Dixon also scored 18 points to lead the winners, while Jon Diebler posted 16. Ventspils got 13 points with 5 assist from Mire Chatman, 11 from Ate Artis, while Andreis Grazulis bagged 10 with a perfect shooting performance.

Palacios’s 6 points put the visitors ahead 3-8, but veteran point guard Chatman from long distance put Ventspils in front 10-8. Palacios converted a three-point play with seconds left in the quarter to give his team an 18-23 lead. Zanis Peiners opened the scoring in the second quarter for the home team. Gabriel soon capped a 0-11 for a 20-34 advantage. A jumper by Dixon and a triple from Gabriel sent Karsiyaka to a 24-41 cushion. Chatman, again from downtown, kept the hosts in charge. Palacios and Ate exchanged baskets to make it 34-47 for the guests at halftime.

Ventpsils made an attempt at a comeback by closing within 38-47 through Harvey Grant from the foul line, but Gabriel finished a break with a huge dunk to rebuild a 14-point cushion. Diebler hit from beyond the arc to make it a 20-point game, 42-62, with three minutes left in the quarter. Andrejs Grazulis with a three-point-play and Martins Mejers with free throws tried to keep the hosts alive, but Soner Senturk went to the rim to make it 50-69 through three quarters. Ten consecutive points from the home team led by a brilliant Gardulis put them back in the game at 60-69. Palacios, assisted by Yunus Sonsirma, scored to restore a double-digit margin, 65-77, with two minutes left. Dixon free throws sealed the visitors’s victory.

Head Coaches

STELMAHERS, ROBERTS
Ventspils
"We knew that our opponents play physical basketball. They are players of a higher class, very good players. We tried to change the situation and come back in the last quarter, but we did not manage to change the situation. I think that Pinar Karsiyaka is one of the leaders of the Eurocup. This game was an education for our young players for whom this is the first experience in a tournament of such a high level."
SARICA, UFUK
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir
"This was a great win for us, especially, because now we have won two games on the road. We fought well, especially, in defense. We rebounded, we passed the ball well to each other and throughout the game we were ahead. We are happy and will now prepare for the next Eurocup game in Turkey. "

Players

ATE, ARTIS
Ventspils
"We began good, but then we allowed our opponents to score easy shots and they opened up a margin. In the second half we had to stop them, but they were more professional and our defense was not as good, so we lost. "
GABRIEL, KENNY
Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir
"We knew that this was going to be a tough game and we would have to play all 40 minutes. We relaxed a little bit in the last quarter, but we pulled ourselves together and the win was ours. I wanted to show and do my best in this game. "
