The Take

Two Tuesday games open the action in Group B, starting with Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia (2-1) playing at home against Le Mans Sarthe Basket (1-2) for the first time. Le Mans has the Eurocup's second-best offensive rebounding team (15.7) after three games, while Reggio Emilia's balanced attack boasts four players posting at least 13.7 points per game. In another first, MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg (1-2) hosts newcomer Enel Basket Brindisi (0-3). Both teams need a win as Ludwigsburg has dropped its last two games, while Brindisi is one of five winless teams left in the competition. On Wednesday, in a matchup of two classic Eurocup teams that never faced each other before, ALBA Berlin (2-1) faces the high-octane offense of Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas (3-0). The visitors, who were last season's runners-up, average 92.3 points with league-highs of 22 assists and 13 three-pointers per game. ALBA's form is on the rise after winning its last two games and scoring more than 80 points in each.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
ALBA Berlin
"We have started well into the new season, but only now we are reaching the phase where we really will see where we are. With Gran Canaria we are facing probably the best team in our group. They were finalists last season and I would say that as individuals they have the same quality this season. They have a good combination of young and experienced players and they all can score challenged shots from any position. Against a team full of so many good shooters we need our best team defense, because you cannot defend them just one by one."
GARCIA RENESES, AITO
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"ALBA Berlin is in first position in their league and they are a great team. My biggest concern is to recover Kyle Kuric, Pablo Aguilar and Brad Newley. If we are not healthy, it is more difficult. We are going to play the same way as in Vitoria, trying to play good and respecting our rival. They are very strong physically with two strong point guards and a high level team."

Players

MILOSAVLJEVIC, DRAGAN
ALBA Berlin
"We are getting better from week to week. But it's too early to relax because also our opponents are also getting better. Gran Canaria for sure is the strongest team we played so far. They are playing fast, they have great shooters and are the favorite in our group. But at home we should have a chance to beat them, although we still are not there, where want to be as a team."
NEWLEY, BRAD
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"It's part of the season, to lose some games. The test now is how we deal with the loss, it's important to focus now on ALBA Berlin and that starts today. My elbow is slowly recovering and my back is feeling a little bit better. Not 100 percent, but happened less than a week ago, so it takes time, but I will try my hardest as I always do to contribute to the team. We played a pretty good game yesterday in Vitoria. If we can improve a little bit in each aspect, I think we can have a good match. It's important to learn about ALBA Berlin first, which we are going to do today and then we will play the match the best as we can."

ALBA comes back to down unbeaten Gran Canaria

ALBA Berlin rallied from a 16-point first half deficit, then used a huge third quarter and a big game-ending run to beat Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas 84-71 on Wednesday night at the Mercedes-Benz arena in the German capital. Both teams now hold 3-1 record, and a three-team share of the lead in Group B. Gran Canaria opened the game with 10-26 lead, and held a comfortable margin until the second half. But the hosts made a 25-5 run in the third quarter to grab the lead. The game was going down to the wire, but ALBA broke a 71-71 tie and finished the game with a 13-0 run for its third consecutive win. Elmedin Kikanovic scored 24 points in victory. Dragan Milosavljevic had 11 points, and Niels Giffey had 10 in victory. Kevin Pangos was the only Gran Canaria scorer in double figures with 18 points. Albert Oliver and Alen Omic had 9 points apiece in the losing effort.

Gran Canaria stormed out of the gate. Xavi Rabaseda and Pangos each hit a triple, and Omic contributed with a pair of baskets to get 4-16. Another basket from Omic, and triples from Oliver and Oriol Pauli extended it to 10-26 after 8 minutes. Giffey and Kikanovic cut it to 17-28 at the end of the first, and Kikanovic added 5 quick points to start the second quarter, 22-28. But Pangos hit for two and for three, and Brad Newley scored his first basket, helping make it 24-39. But Kikanovic scored six points for ALBA, while baskets from Alex King and Cherry in the last two minutes of the half made it 35-47 at halftime.

The hosts had a much better start of the third quarter, as Kikanovic scored again, Cherry nailed a triple cutting it to 42-49. It was only a sign of things to come, as Milosavljevic sparked an 8-0 run that got ALBA within 50-51. The visitors were without a single basket for more than 3 minutes before free throws from Eulis Baez, but Jordan Taylor scored twice to give ALBA its first lead, and help reach 60-54 margin after three quarters. Oliver and Newley quickly made it 60-59 in the fourth. After a basket from Milosavljevic, Pangos hit from downtown and 62-62. Loncar and Giffey kept ALBA in front, but Sasu Salin hit a three-pointer for the visitors and 66-69. After a timeout for ALBA, Kikanovic scored a put-back, and followed it what a basket-plus-foul that made it 71-70. Oliver split free throws to tie the game, but Gran Canaria did not score another basket. King and Cherry nailed triples that gave the hosts 77-71 and started a game-ending 13-0 run. Milosavljevic hit from long range in the final minute, and Kikanovic rounded out the score in the final seconds.

"We have great respect for Gran Canaria, which only lost once in the whole season so far. We started the game badly and lost our confidence because of little things. Gran Canaria moved the ball very well and got everybody involved on offense. But with the energy we came out in the second half we were finally able to stop them. At the end we hit some tough shots to break the game."
