Kostas Kaimakoglou - Unics Kazan - EC12 (photo unics.ru)Unics Kazan cruised to 82-73 win over Panionios BC Athens on Wednesday to remain unbeaten and atop Group F standings. Panionios dropped to 0-4 with two games remaining. Unics never trailed after it opened the first quarter with a 12-2 run and scored 14 unanswered points at the beginning of the second quarter. Nikos Pappas kept visitors in range with 25 points before halftime, but Unics pulled away with a 9-0 spurt midway through the third quarter en route to victory. Ian Vougioukas led Unics with 17 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks, while Mire Chatman had 12 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Chuck Eidson scored 15 and Kostas Kaimakoglou had 14 in victory. Pappas finished with game-high 34 points in less than 31 minutes for Panionios, and Chris Booker collected 12 points and 10 rebounds in defeat.

Vougioukas hit a pair of free throws to open the game and start a 12-2 charge. The hosts converted on seven of the first eight possessions, including a couple of jumpers from Kaimakoglou, a layup from Chatman and a dunk by Vougioukas. A layup by Eidson made it 16-5 as up to that point Pappas was the lone scorer for Panionios. But Pappas did not stop there as he went on a run of his own, stringing together a layup, a basket-plus-foul and a three-pointer to account for 14 visitor's points while the scoreboard flashed 22-17. Panionios completely erased the deficit by quarter’s end, as a Strahinja Dragicevic layup made it 22-21 after 10 minutes. However, the visitors did not manage to take a lead. Unics opened the second quarter with a 14-0 run, started with another Kaimakoglou jumper and highlighted with back-to-back-to-back triples from Pavel Sergeev. Chatman made it 36-21 before Pappas hit a triple to end Panionios’s drought and the visitors continued to ride his hot hand. Pappas hit three more jumpers before halftime while Landon Milbourne and Chris Booker helped with baskets of their own. Unics got a slam and a jump shot from Eidson to keep the margin in double figures, but Pappas raised his total to 25 points with a pair of free throws that made it 43-36 at the break.

Kaimakoglou hit a pair of free throws and Eidson sunk a three to start the third quarter and pushed the lead back to 10 points. While Vougioukas made back-to-back baskets on one end, Panionios answered on the other through Booker, Pappas and Giorgos Bogris. The visitors cut it to 54-46 with an Ashton Gibbs jumper, however Eidson replied with a triple that started another Unics run, this time 9-0. A Vougioukas jumper made it 63-46 before Bogris and Eidson traded dunks. The quarter ended with Chatman’s jumper for 69-52, and Vladimir Vermeenko opened the fourth quarter with two baskets inside that extended the lead to 73-52. Marios Batis hit a three-pointer for Panionios, but it was the team’s lone field goal in the first five minutes of the final quarter. The drought ended with Pappas scoring a triple of his own and Booker added couple of baskets. Meanwhile, Igor Zamanskiy strung together 7 points for Unics, including a triple, to keep the lead at 80-64 before another Batis triple and Pappas layup cut it to 80-71. It was too late for a big comeback, though, as a Chatman layup put an end to Panionios’s hopes.

"At the break I was unsatisfied with the fact that we hadn’t taken control of the game. The players on the bench should have done their job as well. Besides, we had suffered a number of mistakes playing zone defense. However, I’m pleased with the number of assists by Vougioukas and Chatman, and we had had good control of the rebounds. I’m happy to celebrate the fourth win in the Eurocup, though we need to win one more time to book 100% first place in our group. "
SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Panionios BC Athens
"Congratulations to Unics. They deserved this win. They started well from the very first moments, while we didn’t do well during the first five minutes of the first quarter. Later on we started to fight, we played smarter and almost returned by the end of the first quarter. Unics has quality, which was clear in the second and the third periods, especially when they got a 20-point lead. During these periods we also had some good parts of course, but we were not stable. What I liked most about my team today is that my players fought until the end, which is very important for our mentality. I have been working just for a couple of days with Panionios, so it’s very important for me now to start building new parts of the game step by step, thus improving the game itself. What I learned from this game is that we are able to improve and we have good chances for the future. Once again congratulations to Unics and good luck for the future."

"Pappas scored 34 points today, though his team lost. We were ahead nearly all the game, but for the last quarter. It was very important for us to clinch this win to book the first place in our group. We played pretty good in defense, though at times we lost concentration. We are pleased we have won."
PAPPAS, NIKOS
Panionios BC Athens
"The start of the game was very difficult for us, and we didn’t manage to get back in the game soon enough. We allowed a number of baskets and fast breaks, and maybe that was the key moment in this game. We tried more in the second half. We played better in defense, and we stopped some key Unics players. We fought till the end. We had some chances to come back and win the game, we didn’t use them; it was very difficult."
