The Take

On Tuesday, Valencia Baskets (3-0) welcomes Umana Reyer Venice (2-1) in their first meeting ever. No team takes better care of the ball than Valencia, which makes only 8.7 turnovers per game. Venice, a newcomer in the competition, has not eclipsed 73 points yet, but nonetheless won its last two games. One team will come away with its first victory this season when SLUC Nancy (0-3) plays at home against Proximus Spirou Charleroi (0-3) on Wednesday. Only 300 kilometers separate cities of Nancy, France and Charleroi, Belgium. When they played this time last year, Nancy won both of their regular season clashes by at least 15 points. CAI Zaragoza (2-1) returns home after two weeks away to host ratiopharm Ulm (2-1) and break their part of a second-place tie. Despite struggling from the three-point arc with only 16 triples on 26.2% accuracy so far, a win would give CAI its best-ever Eurocup start. Ulm averages 84 points per contest behind Raymar Morgan, who ranks third in performance index rating at 27 per game.

Quotes Head Coaches

WEISZ, ALAIN
SLUC Nancy
"I think this game is the last chance for both teams. After three losses by 2 or 3 points, both teams want and need this win. It is a necessity to stay alivei n the race for the Last 32. During this game, Randal Falker will make his comeback to the paint."
STAS, JACQUES
Proximus Spirou Charleroi
"We'll have to play our best basketball to have a winning opportunity at Nancy. Our opponent, like last season, is physically very strong and I remember we were shoved in the two games. More than us, Nancy lost by just a few points and is close to get its first win. All is still possible in this group, even if we lose tomorrow, but surely a success would launch our European campaign before the coming of Valencia next week. My roster is still incomplete but I feel my players focused on this goal."

Players

SY, BANDJA

"It will be a chance for us to get our first win against a team that has the same record as us. They have a talented team and could have won a game already. It will be up to us to do the job required to get our first win. This is do-or.die for us."

Nancy edges visiting Spirou

In a hard fought game between two previously winless teams, SLUC Nancy edged Proximus Spirou Charleroi 67-63 on Wednesday night. Nancy improved to 1-3 in fifth place, while Spirou sits at 0-4 in the last place of Group C. Nancy went in front 57-46 with a 14-0 run that ended the third quarter and started off the fourth, but Spirou responded with a 3-15 run to regain the lead. However, in the final 3 minutes, the hosts made 7 of 8 free throws and pulled out a victory. Bandja Sy paced Nancy with 15 points, Andy Panko and Morris Curry each netted 12, while Alando Tucker scored 10. Florent Pietrus grabbed 11 rebounds in victory as Nancy outrebounded Spirou 43-32. For the visitors, Billy Baron was the only one in double figures with 17 points, and also dished 7 assists. Jimmy Baron scored 9 in defeat.

Fast breaks from Billy Baron and Pavel Pumperla got Spirou to a better start and 2-8. A put-back from Kevin Tumba had the visitors at 6-11 lead, but baskets from Curry, Tucker and James Bell had Nancy cut it to 13-15. At the start of the second quarter, Sy tied it at 17-17, but Jimmy and Billy Baron put the visitors back in front. After Panko and Billy Baron traded triples, consecutive put-backs from Panko and Pietrus tied it at 26-26. Jimmy Baron hit a triple for Spirou, Curry nailed one for the hosts, before Billy Baron scored in the final seconds to make it 31-33 at halftime.

In the early going of the third quarter, Jordan Heath hit from long range for the visitors, but Curry's triple made it 36-36, and Panko's three put Nancy ahead 40-38. Pumprla had a three-point play, and Sacha Massot a three-pointer that gave Spirou 43-46, but Sy strung together 6 points to spark a run for the hosts. Tucker added a basket-plus-foul, and Sy finished the quarter off with a three-pointer and 55-46 at the end of the third. Randal Falker made it an 11-point contest to start the fourth, but Loic Schwartz and Maxime Gaudoux hit back-to-back triples for Spirou, Billy Baron scored on consecutive possessions, before another three from Gaudoux and a basket from Heath put the visitors in front 60-61 with under 3 minutes to go in the fourth. But Benjamin Sene hit 3 of 4 from the line, and Sy made a pair of free throws for 65-61 with 90 seconds left. The visitors just managed two free throws from Billy Baron, and Sy sealed the deal in the final seconds.

Head Coaches

WEISZ, ALAIN
SLUC Nancy
"It's a good win. When you have lost nine games in a row, it's a great feeling to get the first win. It's a different game than the others. We led by 11 during the third quarter and we started to play bad. We missed free throws and committed turnovers, which is a very bad cocktail. We won tonight on our defense. It was important to stop the Baron brothers and we did the job. Randal helped us on our defense; his return is very nice for the team. It's a good win."
STAS, JACQUES
Proximus Spirou Charleroi
"It's disappointing. We can't say my team didn't fight tonight. We didn't negotiate the important balls at the end of the game. When you lose the battle of rebounds with 13 offensive rebounds in a defense game, it's complicated to win... Nothing is over for my team in regards to the Last 32. "

Players

CURRY, MORRIS
SLUC Nancy
"To get the first win, we needed confidence and good defense. We did the job on defense. It's our first win this year, so it's very positive. We are starting to play better. We keep working every day and I hope this win will help us to continue."
