Ramel Curry - BC Donetsk (photo BC Donetsk)BCM Gravelines became the 2011-12 Eurocup regular season Group A champion despite an 80-69 road loss against BC Donetsk in Ukraine on Tuesday. Both teams tied for first place atop the standings, each with a 5-1 record, but Gravelines was first due to its 25-point home win against Donetsk in Week 2. Ramel Curry paced the winners with 21 points. Ivan Radenovic added 15, Darnell Jackson had 13 while Vule Avdalovic got 11 for Donetsk. J.R. Reynolds led Gravelines with 17 points. J.K. Edwards added 13 for the guests. Gravelines rallied from an early eight-poiny deficit to get a 19-24 edge after 10 minutes. Curry led a 9-0 run that put Donetsk back ahead, 28-24. Gravelines trailed until halftime but Yannick Bokolo shined after the break for a 43-46 edge. It didn't last long, however, as Curry, Radenovic and Avdalovic led a game-breaking 20-0 run that gave Donetsk a 63-46 margin late in the third quarter. Nothing changed from that moment, as Donetsk kept a safe lead until the final buzzer and Gravelines traded baskets to avoid further problems and finish first.

Rudy Jomby got Gravelines going with a three-pointer but Radenovic and Avdalovic fueled an 8-0 run that gave the hosts an 8-3 lead. Jomby split free throws but a layup by Viacheslav Kravtsov boosted Donetsk's lead to 10-4. Ludovic Vaty sank foul shots but Avdalovic and Curry made it an eight-point game, 14-6. Jomby and Reynolds combined for all points in a 2-10 run that tied the game, 16-16. Jackson split free throws and soon added a layup but back-to-back three-pointers by Juby Johnson completed the guests' comeback, 19-22. Free throws by Vaty fixed the score at 19-24 after 10 minutes. A layup by Dmytro Gliebov ignited a 9-0 run in which Curry had 5 points to put Donetsk back ahead, 28-24. Cyril Akpomedah stepped up with free throws off a timeout but Jackson followed a put-back basket with a layup for a 32-27 Donetsk lead. Akpomedah and Maksym Pustozvonov traded baskets and a three-point play by Bokolo kept Gravelines within 34-32. Dounia Issa hit a jumper and Andrew Albicy erased Radenovic's basket with free throws for a 36-36 tie. Curry and Avdalovic rescued Donetsk with back-to-back jumpers but a layup by Edwards got the guests within 40-39. Curry struck from downtown but a put-back basket by Edwards brought Gravelines as close as 43-41 at halftime.

Bokolo struck from downtown and added free throws to give Gravelines a 43-46 edge right after the break. Oleksandr Lypovyy scored down low and a jumper by Radenovic put Donetsk back ahead, 47-46. Gliebov followed free throws with a three-pointer and a layup by Oleg Saltovets broke the game open, 54-46. Gravelines called timeout after a layup by Curry but kept struggling to score. Curry struck from downtown and back-to-back baskets by Avdalovic and Radenovic capped a mamooth 20-0 run for a 63-46 Donetsk margin. Reynolds followed free throws with a three-pointer but a jumper by Curry kept Donetsk way ahead, 65-52, after 30 minutes. Jackson sank a jumper early in the fourth quarter but a jumper by Edwards and a layup by Reynolds brought Gravelines within 67-56. Edwards scored again and Issa made free throws but free throws by Kravtsov and a jumper by Radenovic restored a 71-60 Donetsk lead. Edwards and Reynolds tried to change things but an outstanding Radenovic and a jumper by Jackson sealed the outcome, 75-63. Nothing changed since that moment, as Donetsk registered a well-deserved win but Gravelines ended up winning Group A.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
BC Donetsk
“We had a very hard group, good teams, and despite this we managed to get five wins and go to the next round, which is a good result for us. We spent a lot of energy tonight and made several small mistakes that didn't let us achieve what we needed. Anyway we did a good job, our team is playing better and better with every game.”
MONSCHAU, CHRISTIAN
BCM Gravelines
“Both teams qualified to the next round of the competition so that's why it was not a very interesting game for either. I can't say that I'm satisfied with our game. I'm sure both teams didn't show 100 percent of their potential.”

Players

JACKSON, DARNELL
BC Donetsk
“Our coach did good work before the game to prepare us. We played well, followed the system, but we still have a lot of work to improve our game.”
EDWARDS, JUAN-KHALIF
BCM Gravelines
“It was a tough game, but we did what we planned — we didn't let the opponent win by more than 25 points. Of course we wanted to win but Donetsk played aggressively and almost did what they wanted. The key for us were several good shots in the last quarter.”
