The Take

In the Wednesday opener, Unics Kazan (2-2) hosts Trabzonspor Medical Park (3-1) for the first time. Unics is looking to bounce back after losing two straight. Trabzonspor's success comes with ball movement. Only one team has more than its 21.3 assists in the last three games, but Trabzonspor has lost its only road game of the season so far. Banvit Bandirma (1-3) welcomes Aris Thessaloniki (3-1). The hosts are the best offensive rebounding team, pulling down 15.8 of their own misses per game. But Aris has done a great job defensively. It ranks first in points allowed (67.5), in blocked shot (5.0) and three-point defense, allowing opponents just 20.7% accuracy from the three-point line. In addition, no team takes better care of the ball than Aris, which is tied for league-low 9.5 turnovers per contest. Newcomer Steaua CSM Eximbank Bucharest (1-3) plays Buducnost VOLI Podgorica (2-2) in the Romanian capital. Buducnost has never in its history played official game against a Romanian team. The Montenegrin champions allow the Eurocup's third-lowest 70.7 points per game, but that number rises to 75 points on the road.

Quotes Head Coaches

PASHUTIN, EVGENY
Unics Kazan
"Trabzonspor is a well-balanced team. They have a number of good players, among them Johnson-Odom, which might be dangerous collaborating together with Hardy. Kinsey is very good too, which can make a fastbreak as well as shoot out of the arc. These three Americans make up a driving force for the Turkish team. We shall also keep an eye on Kulig and Stipanovic inside. To be competitive in this game we shall be very concentrated all the 40 minutes long, do not allow our opponents have easy balls and destroy their chemistry. We shall play aggressively and dynamically, and keep to our style. We shall do our best to win at home to please our fans."

"We are expecting a difficult match-up. We have watched a number of our opponents’ games, and we know pretty well that they play good and speedy basketball, prefer to keep the ball for long and shoot at the last seconds. We know a number of players in their roster. We used to play Kulig in Eurocup, and Kinsey, which was a part of Nizhny Novgorod last year. We are sure, tomorrow we will not have an easy stroll, but we are going to do our best to win. The win will be crucially important for us after two road defeats."

Langford helps Unics Kazan beat Trabzonspor

Unics Kazan hit the midway points of the Eurocup Regular Season on a high note after a 78-64 victory over Trabzonspor Medical Park on Wednesday in Group D. The result left both teams with 3-2 records. At the end three quarters and a half balanced quarters, Unics Kazan used a crucial 9-0 run fueled by Kostas Kaimakoglou, Marko Banic and Keith Langford to get a 67-57 advantage and never looked back. Keith Langford led the winners by scoring 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Latavious Williams amassed a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, Banic scored 13 points, Artsiom Parakhouski added 10 and Quino Colom recorded 10 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Andrija Stipanovic and Dwight Hardy led Trabzonspor with 16 points apiece, while Novica Velickovic posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards.

The game started with the lead changing hands several times, but after Parakhoski made it 12-11 for the home team, Trabzonspor went on a 2-11 run boosted by three-pointers from Darius Johnson-Odom and Hardy for a 14-22 margin. Colom fixed the score at 16-22 after 10 minutes. Banic led the charge for Unics early in the second quarter by scoring 6 of 12 points for the hosts in a 12-1 charge for a 28-23 lead with four minutes left in the half. Andrija Stipanovic bagged six in a row for the visitors to get within 1. Tarence Kinsey hit from downtown to tie the game at 32-32, but Valeriy Likhodey answered with a deep three that gave Unics a 35-32 advantage at halftime.

Kinsey and Parakhouski fueled their respective teams early in the third quarter. After Johnson-Odom hit from mid-range and Hardy from long-distance, it was 42-46 for Trabzonspor. Late in the quarter, Williams converted an offensive rebound to tie the game at 50-50. Anton Ponkrashov hit a jumper for a slim 52-20 margin entering the fourth quarter. Kaimakoglou from mid-range extended the difference to 56-50 before Velickovic carried the visitors to within 58-57. Banic, Kaimakoglou and Langford fueled a 9-0 run for the hosts to get a 67-57 advantage with four minutes left in the game. Hardy tried to keep his side on track from long distance, but Langford hit a three to seal Unics’s victory.

"Our opponents are a strong team with good shooters in their roster. Before this round, Trabzonspor topped the group. Therefore we took serious preparations before this match, analyzed thoroughly our opponents and the way we played. Our task was to destroy the opponents' chemistry and make them play man to man. We managed to do to this in the fourth quarter, 26-14. The plan proved itself. We had a good rotation today with nine experienced players. We were good offensively and moved the ball fast, thus creating opportunity to make easy shots. Over the course of the match, we improved our the game, but I am sure we have to work hard to be competitive with other opponents and improve on the way we are playing."
MARKOVIC, NENAD
Trabzonspor Medical Park
"I congratulate Unics for this win. I cannot say I am satisfied with the way we played for three quarters, because we did not control the game's rhythm. We lost the last quarter. Unics did not do something special, while we let them score easy baskets; we were not aggressive enough on offense and we did not make good decisions in defense. It was not easy to play against Langford today. We tried to play Hardy and Kinsey, and all the guards we had, but he played a good game."
