The Take

In the Eurocup season-opener on Tuesday, SLUC Nancy hosts three-time Eurocup champion Valencia Basket. The two sides played last season in the Last 32 and Valencia swept the series; it holds a 4-0 all-time record against Nancy. On Wednesday, ratiopharm Ulm welcomes newcomer Umana Reyer Venice, which makes its first appearance in a European competition in more than three decades. For Ulm, this is a third Eurocup campaign, and previously it reached the quarterfinals once and the eighthfinals once. Also on Wednesday, CAI Zaragoza takes on Proximus Spirou Charleroi in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Spirou has not played on Spanish soil in more than a decade.

Quotes Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"Venice possesses the second-strongest roster in this group behind Valencia. They have a lot of experience, not only within their team, but also with Charly Recalcati at the coaching position. He’s one of the most successful coaches in the history of Italian Basketball. Like many Italian teams, Venice shows good fundamentals and ball movement; they are also very athletic. For us it’s good to play a lot of games right now. Not only because we have a pretty young roster, but also because some players of them missed the preseason. They need to play in order to get in rhythm."
RECALCATI, CARLO
Umana Reyer Venice
"We are about to have our debut in Eurocup, we are really excited and we want to compete. We know everything will count, shot differential included. We repect a lot Ratiopharm Ulm, a good team, very physical, that runs and excites. It's not the greatest moment for us, but we have just started the season. It's good to begin the Eurocup because the team suffers not to play as it would and probably get into such a big league as the Eurocup will increase our chemistry and confidence. Unfortunatly for this game our play, Mike Green, will be out for injurie. But it's a historic return in Europe for Reyer Venezia club and this gives us even more motivation to make a good European run. Moreover by playing twice a week can help our play to get more flowing and this is absolutely necessary for us."

"I remember my first game for Ulm in the Eurocup game about two years ago. It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to being part of this great competition once again. Besides improving our own game in practice, we started watching video of Venice and after running their systems we should be well prepared for this experienced team."
PERIC, HRVOJE
Umana Reyer Venice
"I've been playing several times in Eurocup reaching the Final Four with Treviso and the Final Eight with Zadar, I know it is a high level competition and I suppose it has grown even more over the last years. We are proud to lead Umana Reyer Venice back in Europe but since we are here we want to compete in the Eurocup. It's going to be tough because there are many good teams, facing them will test our squad level and help us get better. Playing in Eurocup can be an advantage for us because we can bounce back from our bad moment of shape. Moreover, by facing a couple of games a week we wont have time to think of what was right or wrong because we are going to focus only on the next game, that is really positive. Also for the European competition we are going to need fans support, for home and road games."

Ulm thrashes Venice in Eurocup season opener

ratiopharm Ulm had a strong start in Group C by downing Umana Reyer Venice 87-68 at home on Wednesday. Raymar Morgan paced the winners with 22 points on 9-of-12 two-point shots, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals, good for a performance index ranking of 41. Augustin Rubit and DeAndre Kane each had 12 while Philipp Neumann had 10 for Ulm, which outrebounded Venice by 41-31. Mike Bramos led the guests with 17 points. Benjamin Ortner added 14 for Venice. Ulm led 22-14 after 10 minutes and an outstanding Morgan allowed the hosts to boost their margin to 45-28 at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Ulm kept a double-digit margin until the final buzzer.

Morgan got Ulm going with a put-back basket which Bramos bettered with a triple for a 2-3 Venice lead. Morgan kept pacing Ulm and a three-pointer by Joschka Ferner gave the hosts a 9-6 lead. Morgan stayed unstoppable and a layup by Rubit gave Ulm a 15-8 margin. Phil Goss and Bramos stepped up for the guests but a three-pointer by Jose Arco and a final basket by Kane boosted the hosts' lead to 22-14 after 10 minutes. Bramos sank another triple and a put-back layup by Hrvoje Peric gave Venice hope at 25-19. It didn't last long, however, as a 10-0 run which Philipp Neumann capped with a basket broke the game open, 35-19. Ortner tried to change things with back-to-back baskets but Morgan singlehandedly kept Ulm way ahead, 41-23. Free throws by Kane gave the hosts a 45-28 margin at halftime.

Bramos sank back-to-back three-pointers immediately after the break but Rubit and an unstoppable Morgan kept Ulm out of trouble, 51-36. A red hot Bramos scored again but Kane and Rubit restored a 55-38 Ulm margin midway through the third quarter. Goss hit free throws and found Ortner for an easy basket but Bonn kept scoring fluently at the other end and a three-pointer by Arco boosted his team's margin to 63-44. Jarrus Jackson and Ortner allowed Venice to get within 66-52 after 30 minutes. Peric hit a jumper early in the fourth quarter and Stefano Tonut added another basket but the guests could not get closer. A 7-0 run highlighted by Arco's three-pointer sealed the outcome, 76-56, with under 6 minutes left. Goss and Ortner kept trying but Ulm had cruised to a well-deserved win.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
“All in all it was a good game that we dominated – unless the three point shots didn’t go in. The 68 points Venice scored make me angry. We had three quarters of solid defense. We dictated the action. But in the last 10 minutes we acted too passive. If we want to beat a top team, we have to defend on a solid level over four [quarters].”
RECALCATI, CARLO
Umana Reyer Venice
“First of all I want to congratulate our opponents, who played a great game. We had problems because we missed our starting point guard Mike Green, but especially Ulm was responsible for a lot of trouble we had in every part of the game. We also missed some open shots, but the defense of Ulm was very tough and well-organized. Ulm also dominated the rebounding.”

Players

MORGAN, RAYMAR
ratiopharm Ulm
"We played good defense over three quarters of the game – if we can do that over 40 minutes, we can play even better. After my nose injury in the last German League game, I had two days of rest. I guess that helped me somehow. But the key tonight was our defensive effort – and our ball movement."
BRAMOS, MICHAEL
Umana Reyer Venice
"They beat us from the beginning to the end, because they were better in every part of the game. We have to learn from that – it’s early in the season. Even though I had a good shooting night, I cannot be happy with my performance. "
