The Take

On Tuesday, JSF Nanterre (3-2) hosts Dominion Bilbao Basket (3-2) in the French capital, with the winner assured of at least a share of first place in the Group A standings. Nanterre won their first game in Bilbao 73-76, however, Bilbao has won all three of its road games since then and through five games has knocked down a Eurocup-leading 58 three-point shots. In an all-German showdown, EWE Baskets Oldenburg (2-3) hosts Telekom Baskets Bonn (2-3). After starting its Eurocup campaign with three double-digit defeats, Oldenburg has won two straight games by a combined margin of 4 points in the last two weeks. The hosts go into the game allowing 84.8 points per game, the fourth-most in the competition, while Bonn has allowed even more, 88.2 points per game, more than all but one other Eurocup team. Dolomiti Energia Trento (3-2) plays at home against Union Olimpija Ljubljana (2-3). In a shootout to start the season, Olimpija celebrated a 98-97 win, but it could be a different game this time around, because Trento has been really solid defensively at home, holding opponents to just 68 points, the lowest average for teams that have already played three home games.

Quotes Head Coaches

DRIJENCIC, MLADEN
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"There might be no opponents that know each other better than Bonn and Oldenburg. We have played against them many times, there won't be any secrets. Bonn moves the ball well and plays as a team. It will be important to be intense on the defensive end and to control the rebound."
FISCHER, MATHIAS
Telekom Baskets Bonn
"Simply put: If we want to be in contention for the second stage in Eurocup action we have to win. In our last two games against Nanterre and Bayreuth our readiness wasn’t at the level we were able to bring to the table earlier this season. Oldenburg is a well-known opponent we have to respect on whatever stage we face each other. I expect my players to fight for each inch on the defensive end and let the ball do the work on offense."

Players

SCHWETHELM, PHILIPP
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"The situation in our group is close, all teams are within one win. We lost our first three games, but could put us back in a good situation again with a third win. Having won five games in BBL and Eurocup in a row gives us a lot of confidence. We want to beat Bonn and hope, that our fans will give us huge support in this important game."
MADRICH, DIRK
Telekom Baskets Bonn
"As we lost four games in a row it’s the exact opposite for Oldenburg these days with five consecutive wins. Our main task is to control the boards and the pace of the game. Both teams know each other extremely well, the winning formula is all about will and effort."

Kramer, Qvale lift Oldenburg past Bonn

In a critical, all-German showdown in Group A, EWE Baskets Oldenburg improved its chances to reach the Last 32 by downing Telekom Baskets Bonn 77-70 at home on Wednesday. Oldenburg improved to 3-3 while Bonn dropped to 2-4. Chris Kramer and Brian Qvale led the winners with 14 points each. Rickey Paulding added 11 for Oldenburg. Aaron White led Bonn with 15 points. Rotnei Clarke added 13 while Eugene Lawrence and Dirk Madrich each had 12 for the guests. Clarke and Lawrence shined early, allowing Bonn to get a 17-19 lead after 10 minutes. Tadas Klimavicius led a 0-6 run which boosted his team's lead to 23-30. Paulding rescued Oldenburg and got help from Nemanja Aleksandrov to give the hosts a 39-34 lead at halftime. White kept Bonn within 51-48 late in the third quarter but consecutive three-pointers by Philipp Schwethelm boosted Oldenburg's lead to 59-51 after 30 minutes. Bonn got within 74-69 already in the final minute but a three-pointer by Scott Machado sealed the outcome.

Kramer was the first player to score and Paulding soon added his own basket but three-pointers by Jimmy McKinney and Lawrence soon gave Bonn a 4-6 lead. Kramer joined the three-point shootout and bettered Lawrence's basket with another triple for a 10-8 Oldenburg lead. White and Vaughn Duggins exchanged baskets and a triple by Clarke put Bonn back ahead, 12-13. Madrick also struck from downtown but a three-point play by Aleksandrov and a basket by Machado restored a 17-16 Oldenburg lead. A three-pointer by Clarke put Bonn back ahead, 17-19, after 10 minutes. Back-to-back baskets by Madrich gave the guests a 19-23 margin early in the second quarter. Qvale quickly answered with consecutive baskets but Klimavicius had 4 points in a 0-6 run which boosted Bonn's margin to 23-30. Oldenburg called timeout and got 5 unanswered points from Paulding. By the time Paulding scored again, the game was tied at 32-32. Lawrence hit free throws but a 7-0 run which Aleksandrov capped with a triple gave the hosts a 39-34 edge at halftime.

Andrej Mangold and Qvale traded baskets right after the break and Madrich kept Bonn as close as 41-39. Machado hit free throws and Qvale scored around the basket but White singlehandedly kept the guests in the game, 45-42. Aleksandrov and Klemen Prepelic hit free throws and Qvale scored again but three-pointers by Clarke and Michal Chylinski brought Bonn as close as 51-48. Robin Smuelders scored down low and Schwethelm struck twice from downtown - beating the third-quarter buzzer with his second one for a 59-51 Oldenburg margin after 30 minutes. Qvale stepped up with a layup early in the fourth quarter which Lawrence erased with a backdoor basket. A driving layup by Madrich made Oldenburg call timeout at 61-56. Kramer rescued the hosts with a triple but Lawrence answered from downtown to keep Bonn alive, 64-59. Prepelic hit one from beyond the arc and free throws by Smuelders made it a double-digit game, 69-59, with 4 minutes left. Chylinski and Clarke managed to bring Bonn within 74-69 already in the final minute but a step-back triple by Machado sealed the outcome.

DRIJENCIC, MLADEN
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"We invested a lot in the game. Comparing the two games against Bonn in the Eurocup, today we allowed 70 points instead of 89 in the first game. So I can agree with what we did. For the first time this season we had all our players healthy. That´s the reason why we are getting better step by step."
FISCHER, MATHIAS
Telekom Baskets Bonn
"I´m not satisfied with the game. We made a lot of mistakes on defense and had terrible free throw shooting. Oldenburg made 100 percent of theirs and got more rebounds. Nevertheless, for us it was a step in the right direction after our bad game in Bayreuth. "
