Limoges win in Berlin, is on verge of Top 16

Limoges CSP took a big step towards reaching the 7DAYS EuroCup Top 16 in coming from behind for a 78-84 win at ALBA Berlin. Danny Gibson nailed 4 three-pointers in scoring 16 points to go with 6 assists for Limoges, which improved to 4-4 in Group C. After trailing for most of the first half, Limoges used a 3-23 run in the third quarter to take control and never trailed again. Axel Bouteille and Mam Jaiteh both scored 13 points for the winners and Dru Joyce chipped in 12 points and 5 assists. Limoges can lock up a Top 16 spot if RETAbet Bilbao Basket defeats Partizan NIS Belgrade on Wednesday. ALBA, which is already guaranteed a spot in the next round, dropped to 5-3. Stefan Peno scored 13 points with 5 assists, Luke Sikma added 11 points and 9 rebounds and Bogdan Radosavljevic scored 11 in defeat.

Dennis Clifford gave the hosts the lead first and Brian Conklin answered with the guests’ first basket. A Jaiteh reverse gave Limoges the lead again before back-to-back threes from Akeem Vargas and Sikma made it 15-8. After having picked up 3 assists, Joyce took over some scoring along with Jaiteh, but Tim Schneider hit a jumper and three and fellow reserve Radosavljevic added two scores to push the ALBA advantage to 26-18 after 10 minutes. Limoges kept ALBA scoreless for the first two minutes of the second quarter and Tautvydas Lydeka’s hook shot made it 26-22. Schneider and Lydeka swapped dunks, but ALBA pushed the lead back to 8 points on a Clifford tip-in. Limoges fought its way back into the game with Joyce and Bouteille hitting three-pointers to trim the margin to 44-42. Spencer Butterfield ended the first half with a three of his own and the hosts led 47-42 at the break.

Butterfield started the second half with another three and a Marius Grigonis layup gave ALBA its first double-digit lead 52-42. But Limoges charged back with Jaiteh baskets and three-pointers from Joyce and William Howard to knot the game at 52-52. With ALBA held nearly five minutes without a score, Bouteille gave Limoges the lead at 52-54. Sikma free throws stopped the drought, but Gibson nailed back-to-back threes in a 1-11 push as the visitors coasted to 57-65 after 30 minutes. A big Radosavljevic dunk early in the fourth had the deficit down to 62-68. And it was again 6 points after Peno’s three-point play, 65-71. Gibson, however, followed with back-to-back threes and a Jean-Frederic Morency dunk increased the cushion to 12. ALBA gave it one final push with an 8-2 spurt on Grigonis’s three-pointer to get within 78-84 with 36 seconds left, but that was all ALBA could do.

ALBA Berlin
"We lost the game mainly because the two playmakers they have, Joyce and Gibson, played very well, especially in the pick-and-roll, taking a lot of points, taking a lot of advantage with different kinds of passes, inside and outside. We did not defend the pick-and-roll well. This is the situation. And the second situation that was very bad for us is to have a lot of trepidation. We were in a hurry and we gave a lot of passes in the beginning of offenses instead of continuing to play more seconds, going to the next option, next option. Sometimes, four or five offenses in a row, we lost the ball in the first seconds with difficult passes. In the end we had 3 steals and 17 turnovers. This shows that mentally we were not prepared for this situation."
MILLING, KYLE
Limoges CSP
"The game was a very important game for us. We know that Berlin was already qualified and you can go two ways when a team plays without pressure. They can be really free and hit a lot of shots and play completely free, which Berlin did in the first quarter. But I told my guys that defensively we weren’t so bad because they hit a lot of shots at the end of the shot clock, we had to just keep going and going and going. Our intensity I think was a little bit more than them in the second half. And we made the difference in the second half. All my guys gave something. "

SCHNEIDER, TIM

"We were mentally not ready in the third quarter. We made a lot of bad decisions in offense and defense. A lot of turnovers. And defensively we gave up a lot of easy shots for them."
SIKMA, LUKE
ALBA Berlin
"I thought we didn’t handle their pressure very well. They really got into us. We made a lot of turnovers, especially myself. We just can’t have that. That’s not how we want to play. They were fighting to advance and we just didn’t come with the right intensity. A combination of those two things made it a difficult game for us."
GIBSON, DANNY
Limoges CSP
"This is a great place to play, a tough place to play and a really good ALBA Berlin team. But we just came in here and fought, and I am happy for my teammates. We are just trying to move on. In the second half we just focused in. We got locked in. We knew we had a chance, that’s what we said at halftime. We wanted to come out and show a different face."
