The Take

In a clash of fellow German clubs on Tuesday, ALBA Berlin (4-1) welcomes MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg (3-2). Ludwigsburg comfortably won their Round 1 match 79-60, but ALBA has been on a four-game winning streak ever since, including a pair of four-point road wins. In Tuesday's other game, group co-leader Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas (4-1) plays host to Le Mans Sarthe Basket (1-4). A win would all but mathematically secure a place in the Last 32 for Gran Canaria, which scores the second-most points at home in the competition, 91.3, and leads the Eurocup with 13 three-point shots made per game. A Le Mans loss together with a win for ALBA would also put the Berliners on the verge of qualification. In an all-Italian showdown, winless newcomer Enel Basket Brindisi (0-5) hosts Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia (3-2). In both pervious home losses Brindisi has not eclipsed 70 points, ranking it second-to-last in that category.

Quotes Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
ALBA Berlin
"We play this game only 48 hours after our game in the national league against Bayern Munich, but I don't think that this schedule will hurt us because we still have an open bill with Ludwigsburg. They are the only team, which has beaten us so far in this season and in this first round loss we did not look good at all. Of course, we want to look different on Tuesday."
PATRICK, JOHN
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"Berlin is in the driver's seat in the German league and in Eurocup right now. In the league they just beat and dominated Bayern Munich. Belrin has a bunch of guys that perform on a very high level. They are well coached and play hard together. It is a tough game for us."

Players

TAYLOR, JORDAN
ALBA Berlin
"We still have plenty of games left. We take it one game at a time and focus now on Ludwigsburg in Eurocup. They have a good team and just one loss in BBL. It’s gonna be fun. I feel like we didn’t have our best game the last time we faced Ludwigsburg. It will be a fun challenge in front of our home crowd and we looking forward to."
McCRAY, DAVID
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"So far, Berlin have only lost one single game this season – against us. I am sure they are ready and want to take revenge for that. They play an aggressive style. The big guys are very good. Their guards attack the basket very well. We have to be ready for that."

MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg beats ALBA in all-German League clash

MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg completed a sweep of German League rival ALBA Berlin and moved into at least second place in Group B with a 79-90 victory at Mercedes-Benz Arena in the German capital on Tuesday. Brad Loesing scored 18, David McCray 16, Royce O’Neale 14 and Mustafa Shakur collected 12 points and 10 assists for the winners, who moved into second place with a 4-2 record, the same as ALBA. The visitors led from start to finish after scoring the game’s first 8 points. It was 29-54 at halftime with Ludwigsburg making 8 of 12 three-pointers in the first half. ALBA used a 14-0 run to start the fourth quarter to give its fans hope, but Ludwigsburg responded before the situation grew dire. Eldemdin Kikanovic and Dragan Milosavljevic scored 18 points apiece for ALBA and Jordan Taylor added 14 in defeat.

A pair of McCray triples and O’Neale free throws gave Ludwigsburg a 0-8 start. After a Mitchell Watt tip-in got the hosts on the scoreboard, O’Neale added a three-pointer and a block. Kikanovic helped the hosts close the gap to 10-15 with 8 points, but Loesing added another Ludwigsburg three and Tekele Cotton’s steal and layup established a 10-point lead. Ludwigsburg reeled off 9 straight points with Cotton draining another triple to make it 12-29. Will Cherry’s first basket and O’Neale free throws made it 14-31 after 10 minutes. Loesing and Shakur each scored twice in a 2-10 run to start the second quarter. Threes by Adam Waleskowski and Loesing pushed the difference to 21-47. Kreso Loncar and Shawn Huff traded threes before Shakur made it a 29-point game. Niels Giffey was fouled making a three and sank the resulting free throws to put 29-54 on the scoreboard at halftime.

ALBA’s defense held Ludwigsburg without a basket for the first six minutes of the second half. Taylor and Milosavljevic heated up as the hosts closed the gap to 15. However McCray scored 5 points in a 0-9 run capped by Shakur free throws to make it 42-66. McCray and huff knocked down threes to keep Ludwigsburg comfortable. Kikanovic’s free throws ended the third quarter at 51-75. ALBA took charge in the fourth quarter with 14 unanswered points; Milosavljevic and Taylor led the way. After Shakur ended the Ludwigsburg drought with free throws, Cherry’s triple made it 68-77 with two and a half minutes remaining. O’Neale and Cotton scored to help ice the game with time to spare.

ALBA Berlin
"Ludwigsburg deserved this win without any doubt. In the second half we played better, but I have to apologize to our fans for the first half. I can’t remember that we ever played like this. Maybe my team didn’t handle the recent successes well. If we are not ready to give 100 percent for 40 minutes, we can lose every game. We do not have the quality or experience to win in other ways. What we have to do is to fight with 100 percent.”
PATRICK, JOHN
MHP RIESEN Ludwigsburg
"I am very proud that my club won for the first time since 1993 in Berlin. It was also a very important win for us in this group. We had two injured players with Trice and Munoz, but our bench did a great job today – especially David McCray. For the first 19 minutes we played excellently. Then ALBA fought back and we started to commit stupid fouls. ALBA had the momentum in the end and I am happy the game did not go a couple of minutes longer."
