Gran Canaria downs Lietkabelis, clinches first place in Group A

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas locked first place in Group A by downing Lietkabelis Panevezys 73-92 in Lithuania on Wednesday. Gran Canaria improved to 7-1, while Lietkabelis finished the regular season with a 3-5 record and will place fourth at the end of this round if Nizhny Novgorod beats MZT Skopje Aerodom later Wednesday. Kyle Kuric led the winners with 20 points. Royce O'Neale added 13, Darko Planinic scored 12 and Sasu Salin 10 for Gran Canaria. Ksistof Lavrinovic led Lietkabelis with 20 points, Ben Madgen added 14 and Zygimantas Janavicius had 11 for the hosts. Gran Canaria hit 8 of 18 three-point shots (44.4%), outrebounded Lietkabelis 25-32 and dished 23 assists. Gran Canaria excelled in two-point shooting (27 of 40, 67.5%) and limited Lietkabelis to just 45.2% shooting (19 of 42) inside the arc.

An alley-oop dunk by Oriol Pauli sparked a 0-7 opening run for the visitors that Eulis Baez capped with a three-pointer. Madgen stepped up with a triple and a layup and got help from Mindaugas Lukauskis and Simas Galdikas to bring Lietkabelis within 11-13. Salin struck from downtown and a layup by Richard Hendrix put Gran Canaria fully in charge at 11-18. Lavrinovic tried to change things for the hosts and brought his team a bit closer, 18-22. O'Neale followed a jumper with a dunk and Xavi Rabaseda banked in a buzzer-beating three-pointer for a 20-29 Gran Canaria lead after 10 minutes. Kuric joined the three-point shootout early in the second quarter, but Lavrinovic kept Lietkabelis within 24-35. Donatas Tarolis and Galdikas scored down low and a three-pointer by Lorenzo Williams brought the hosts within single digits, 32-41. Madgen took over with a layup and a corner triple and an unstoppable Lavrinovic brought Lietkabelis within 43-45 at halftime. O'Neale scored the opening 5 points in a 0-11 Gran Canaria run that Darko Planinic capped with a layup for a 43-56 score. Lavrinovic scored down low, but Planinic and an outstanding Salin helped Gran Canaria break the game open at 45-64. The guests kept a 54-72 margin after 30 minutes and extended it to 54-78 early in the fourth quarter, more than enough to seal the outcome and celebrate a first-place finish in Group A.

"The game had two very different parts. In the first half, we only played offense, in the second we also played very good defense. We outrebounded them and that was the key for the game."

Players

PAULI, ORIOL
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"We are really happy for winning another game. We started with a good rhythm. Then they played really well because of our bad defense. We talked as a team at halftime and changed our mind and that allowed us to begin to play better and achieve first place in our group."
