The Take

Swans Gmunden looks to pull off a major surprise as it faces DKV Joventut. Head coach Bob Gonnen's Swans was up and down all season and finished with a 5-5 record. The Austrian team struggled on the boards, with just 29 rebounds per game and made just 31% from long range - the sixth-worst showing in the ULEB Cup. The heart and soul of Gonnen's team is guard Deteri Mayes, who averaged 21.1 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Power forward Kevin Johnson played a major role as well with 12.4 points and 9.2 rebounds. But Gonnen also got support from small forward Ian Boylan (13.3 ppg, 5 apg, 2.1 spg) shooting guard Peter Hutter (9.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.6 asp) and center Matthias Mayer (7.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.1 apg). But Swans will have its hands full trying to stop Joventut. Head coach Aito Reneses's Joventut won its first seven games before losing at Turk Telekom and eventually finishing with a 9-1 record. The Spanish team closed its Group A campaign strong with a 17-point win over Bosna and a 36-point victory at Siauliai. Joventut's 91 points per game was the third highest in the competition while the team shot 61% from inside the arc, 42% from beyond the stripe, 79% from the free throw line while grabbing a ULEB Cup-best 36 rebounds per game and dishing out a tournament-high 18 assists per game. And Reneses has plenty of weapons to choose from. Point guard Rudy Fernandez led the team with 14.3 points and dished out 4.4 assists while shooting guard Demond Mallet had 13.5 points and 2.7 assists. Young star Ricky Rubio shined with 7.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.1 steals in 20 minutes of action. But the guard trio was not alone in its production. Center Jan Jagla collected 12.7 points and 7.9 rebounds while fellow big man Petar Popovic added 11.7 points. Power forward Lubos Barton scored 10.5 points a game and center Eduardo Hernandz Sonseca chipped in 5.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks off the bench. But Reneses will not have the services of big man Lonny Baxter, who left the team after averaging 5.4 points and 3.7 rebounds. Still, Reneses should have enough firepower to knock off Swans.

Demond Mallet - DKV JoventutDKV Joventut is one step away from advancing to the ULEB Cup eigthfinals as it stunned the Allianz Swans Gmunden on the road by 59-89 on Tuesday night. The Spanish team took off in the secodn quarter and never looked back, despite the Swans' efforts to try to stay in the fight. Demond Mallet led the winners with 28 points behind 6 of 9 three-pointers. Jerome Moiso added 15, Lubos Barton 11 and Rudy Fernandez, who was not on the starting five, 10. For Gmunden, Petter Hutter led the way with 15 points and Matthias Mayer added 13. The second game of the series will take place next Tuesday in Badalona, Spain as DKV Joventut will hold a 30-point advantage to face that second duel in order to advance to the next round.

Matthias Mayer started on fire for the Swans as he scored 7 of Gmunden's first 10 points without miss for a 10-7 lead for the hosts. However, Jerome Moiso and Pau Ribas scored straight buckets to put DKV Joventut ahead, 10-11. Starting at that moment, the guests started forging a more solid lead, and when Rudy Fernandez stepped on the court Joventut reached a 17-23 with his first basket that put an end to the first quarter. Joventut started the second period with a 0-7 burst capped by Edu Hernandez-Sonseca, but Mayer and two free throws by Peter Hutter got the Swans going. Demond Mallet however, had a good night from the arc and sank 4 of 5 threes to launch Joventut to a 26-45 lead in minute 17 after Rudy's new three. The quarter still had some time for a Ferran Laviña triple and a new bomb by Mallet to leave an almost decisive 28-51 at the break.

The third quarter started with Joventut dominating and quickly rising up to 33-61, but a 7-0 run by the hosts capped by Ian Boylan's basket made it 40-61. Joventut reacted and free throws by Mallet allowed the guests to rack up two more points to add to the score difference as the scoreboard showed a 44-69 after 30. Six points by Lubos Barton kept pushing Joventut in the last period while Gmunden never surrendered as Hutter's three made it 55-82 in minute 34. The last minutes of the game saw both teams waiting for the final buzzer as Joventut made things easier for the second game next week in Badalona with a 30-point final win.
