THE TAKE

Akasvayu Girona got the best of BC Hemofarm Stada again and holds a 9-point margin as it hosts the ULEB Cup Last 16 return leg. Head coach Pedro Martinez's Girona used a big third quarter to grab an 80-71 road victory after having won at home and lost on the road against Hemofarm in the regular season. Akasvayu held Hemofarm to just 36% from the field and the Spanish club made 55% for the game. Center Marc Gasol decided the game with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 blocked shots. Guard Victor Sada was one of the three others with double figure scoring with 13 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Martinez's passing game worked tremendously as Girona amassed 20 assists for the game. Forward Branko Cvetikovic scored 15 points and guard Arriel McDonald had 12 while forward Erik Daniels had his first poor game with just 4 points. But Martinez needs to make sure his troops remember the 27-15 third quarter and not the fourth period, when Akasvayu collected just 10 points. With a Final Eight showdown against either Unics Kazan or Artland Dragons waiting in the wings, Girona has a great chance to advance as it has yet to lose at home this season in the ULEB Cup. Hemofarm meanwhile lost by 26 points at Girona in Week 2 but only have a 9-point deficit to make up. But head coach Miroslav Nikolic resigned over the weekend citing differences with club management and his assistants Miodrag Rajkovic and Goran Topic will take over the coaching duties against Girona. Hemofarm has struggled all season on the road, winning just two of six contests. Small forward Rawle Marshall continued his strong play with 21 points in the first leg - the seventh straight ULEB Cup game with at least 17 points. But the team clearly missed forward Goran Jagodnik - out with a knee injury. Center Milivoje Bozovic scored 12 points while guard Miljan Pavkovic added 11 and forward Milan Macvan 10 off the bench. But it was not nearly enough. Rajkovic and Topic will need to have some players step up their production to help Marshall if Hemofarm wants to reach the Final Eight.

Vukosavljevic kept pacing Hemofarm with a put-back layup but Gasol and a power layup by Middleton allowed Akasvayu to get a 53-45 edge after 30 minutes. Hemofarm needed a major comeback to return to the series, but it just didn't happen. Gasol provided the play of the night with a two-handed dunk over Vukosavljevic while Cvetkovic fired in one from downtown to make it a 13-point game, 58-45, and seal the outcome of the series. Sada fed Cvetkovic for an easy layup that Bozovic erased with a quick basket. Marshall nailed a triple, but Hemofarm needed much more than that. Meanwhile, a dunk-and-foul by Cvetkovic that gave the hosts a 70-53 lead allowed all Akasvayu fans to celebrate that their team is going to the ULEB Cup Final Eight!

Head Coaches

MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Akasvayu Girona
"We couldn't maintain the rhythm for the whole 40 minutes and we could have broken the game earlier. We demonstrated our superiority and we are fully satisfied with the result, which brings us to the Final Eight. We hope to get further in the competition."

Players

SAN EMETERIO, FERNANDO
Akasvayu Girona
"I think we had the game under control. We came out concentrated and strong. We could sense the end throughout the second half. It was our objective for the season and we are happy. We have to keep on working to try to get as far as we can in the championship."
JOKSIMOVIC, NEBOJSA
BC Hemofarm Stada
"My personal opinion is that we played a great first half, but we didn't hold their rhythm. The result was that we lost 22 balls. We lost the opportunity to play the Final Eight in the last game at home."
