THE TAKE

Two former Eurocup winners meet on Spanish soil this week, as Valencia and Unics collide in the quarterfinals. Valencia lifted the trophy in 2003 and 2010, while Unics did likewise in 2011 and enters into this stage as Group L winner. Both sides have deep benches and five players averaging in double digits on scoring, plus their performance index ratings are the two best overall so far in the competition. Another stat worth noting is that Valencia was the top team on three-point shooting percentage (40.6) in the Last 16, so Unics will have to watch out when the ball is beyond the arc. Inside, a big duel will take place under the boards - where both sides have size, skills and experience. Valencia’s Justin Doellman and Unics’s Kostas Kaimakoglou will provide the shooting ability from downtown, while one of the most talented young big man in the continent, Bojan Dubljevic, will use his athleticism and versatile skills. Vitor Faverani, and Serhiy Lishchuk are a key combo in the paint for Valencia, but equally impressive is the pairing of Ian Vougioukas and Vladimir Veremeenko for the visitors. All that rebounding fuels Valencia’s main strategy of running high pace at home, to fuel Rafa Martinez’s breaks and create open shots for Thomas Kelati and Pau Ribas. Unics has players of its own that it will want to bring into the game –none more so than Eurocup MVP Chuck Eidson and skillful scorer Terrell Lyday. The matchups on the perimeter will also be spectacular, like that at point guard between Valencia’s Stefan Markovic and Rodrigo San Miguel against Unics’s Mire Chatman and Petr Samoylenko.

Quotes Head Coaches

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Valencia Basket
"We have two games to decide our future in the Eurocup. We play against the leader of the VTB League in their group, a team with important players like Eidson, Lyday, Vougioukas or Kaimakoglou. After our last loss we are a little in doubt but we are aware that if we are OK, we can play against top level teams like Unics. So far, the team has responded in front of big appointments like in the Spanish King's Cup. Our greatest problem are the ups and downs in the games and we must try to correct that. We must focus on turnovers and defensive rebounds. We want to win this game and we want to eliminate Unics and we will face this game with the best possible attitude."
EREMIN, STANISLAV
Unics Kazan
"Valencia is one of the best teams in Spain. I saw them last year competing at the Eurocup Final Four in Khimki. They lost to Khimki in the final, though they played well and showed top quality basketball. Their head coach Velimir Perasovic has done a good job. The team is keeping to the tough and aggressive play, and constantly involves pressing. Valencia plays fast, like most Spanish teams do. They are easy going and mobile, and their centers are very quick. Especially at home, Valencia plays very well.

"Speaking about the roster, Valencia has got a good number of players to keep an eye on. Most of them are doing aggressively and shoot well, particularly, out of the arc. One of their leaders is Rafa Martinez, a very experienced player and a good sniper, always punishing opponents when left alone at the shooting point. His teammate is power forward Doellman. He does very well this season. Our fans might know Ukrainian Serhiy Lishchuk, who has been playing for Valencia for a long time already. He is very mobile, and from my viewpoint, does here much more attractively than for his national team. Kelati undergoes his second youth sparkling with his scoring qualities. In other words, the team is well-balanced, and almost all the 10 players are transposable. I’m convinced that the first quarterfinals match will be very important for our team. It will be important for us to stand still on the road, which will have a certain impact on our mood for the decisive return clash."

FAVERANI, VITOR

"In the last game we played pretty well but in the last minutes we failed to remain consistent. We know that this is a quality team we will practice hard, talk and be like before again. We are all aware of the importance of the first game against Unics and we must stick together and gove it all on the court."
VEREMEENKO, VLADIMIR
Unics Kazan
"Valencia Basket is a strong team, which plays well in defense. We know, that Valencia is doing well in the Spanish League, and that is no surprise, since the team’s roster is pretty strong. We know well some of their players. Among them Ukranian center Serhiy Lischuk, forward Thomas Kelati, who used to play for Khimki and strong guards Ribas and Markovic. There is no doubt that the coming clash will be very important for both opponents. On our side, we will definitely do our best to win it. The first match will take place on the road, so I guess we will have to play defensively. We should keep concentrated all the match long and control the game, since the last minutes might be in the end decisive."
Justin Doellman - Valencia Basket - EC12 (photo Valencia Basket)Valencia Basket defeated Unics Kazan 80-70 in Game 1 of their two-game quarterfinals series on Wednesday night. This win means that in Game 2, to be played in Kazan, Russia, in one week, a victory or a loss by up to 10 points will be enough for Valencia to advance. The Spanish side, led by Justin Doellman, took the lead for good in the second quarter. Unics had a red-hot Terrell Lday, but it never came closer than 4 points, while Valencia led by as much as 57-44 before settling for a 10-point advantage going into Game 2. Doellman had 18 points plus 8 rebounds and 5 steals off the bench, and Bojan Dubljevic scored 19 points in 18 minutes on the floor. Stefan Markovic chipped in with 10 points and 5 assists in victory. For Unics, Lyday nailed 28 points on 6-for-6 three-point shooting. Mire Chatman collected 13 points and 8 rebounds, while Chuck Eidson scored 11 points.

Ian Vougioukas and Serhiy Lishchuk each had couple of layups to start things up. After Markovic made a basket-plus-foul for 7-6, a jumper from Chatman and a triple from Eidson kept Unics's momentum. Lyday sank a three-pointer for a 13-17 lead and added another three-pointer a minute later, but Vitor Faverani answered, scoring 8 points in a short span giving the hosts a 21-20 edge after 10 minutes. Doellman and Vougioukas traded baskets at the start of the second quarter, and Valencia got separation when Markovic and Doellman scored 5 points apiece, including each sinking a triple, for 33-24. Lyday snapped a 10-2 run with a three-pointer, and Nikita Shabalkin cut it to 37-31 from close range, but Dubljevic scored 8 points before halftime – first a triple right after a timeout, then added a floater, before finishing the half with a floater-plus-foul to make it 45-35 going into the break.

At the start of the third quarter, Dubljevic and Markovic extended the lead to 12 points before Dubljevic and Lyday traded three-pointers, with Lyday getting a free throw as well, for 52-44. Valencia raised it to 57-44 with a triple from Rafa Martinez, however, Unics had an answer with Lyday nailing his fifth triple in as many attempts, and Chatman stealing two balls and racing for fastbreak baskets. Rodrigo San Miguel snapped the run with a timely three, and Lishchuk made the margin 8 points as Valencia tried with zone defense, but Nikita Shabalkin and Eidson made jump shots cutting it to 64-58 going into the final quarter. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Doellman scored from close and long range, then assisted Pau Ribas for an uncontested layup and 70-60. After Lyday and Ribas traded threes, Dubljevic and Doellman scored from under the hoop for 7 unanswered Valencia points to make it 77-65. Unics, though, used a series of offensive rebounds to end its drought, and Lyday drew 3 free throws and made them all. But, with every single point potentially critical, Doellman made a steal and raced for a dunk to round out the scoring at 80-70.

"We played against a very good team. We had energy, but not great shooting efficiency. It happens we you have a lot of energy. "
EREMIN, STANISLAV
Unics Kazan
"Ten points [difference] are more than we expected; in the first half we didn’t defend their big players. Lyday played a great game, but we needed more from our big players."
