Spartak St. Petersburg inks Ponkrashov
Jul 21, 2010
Spartak St. Petersburg improved its backcourt and got stronger to face the Eurocup Qualifying Round by inking guard Anton Ponkrashov to a two-year deal, the club announced Tuesday. Ponkrashov (200, 24) arrives from CSKA Moscow, where he averaged 2.8 points in 20 Euroleague games last season. He helped CSKA to win the Russian League and the Russian Cup titles, as well as making it to the Final Four. In 2008-09, Ponkrashov played for Khimki and went as far as the Eurocup title game, where his team finished runner-up. Over 13 Eurocup games, Ponkrashov averaged 4.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 18 minutes for Khimki. Ponkrashov started his career in his native St. Petersburg and joined Spartak from 2004 to 2006 before playing for CSKA in 2006-07, winning both the Russian League and Russian Cup. He helped CSKA to make it to the Euroleague final in 2007. One of the tallest point guards anywhere, Ponkrashov has enjoyed international success as European champion with the Russian national team in 2007.
