SPARTAK SPB lands coach Trifunovic
Spartak St. Petersburg found a new coach for its upcoming Eurocup debut in the 2009-10 season by inking Aleksandar Trifunovic to a one-year deal, the club announced Tuesday. Trifunovic, 42, arrives from Panionios On Telecoms. He helped Panionios to make it to the Greek Cup semifinals and the Greek League playoffs. Trifunovic also helped Panionios to get quality wins in the Euroleague record season, downing Real Madrid, Efes Pilsen or Partizan, but the team did not reach the Top 16. He previously led Lietuvos Rytas to the 2007 ULEB Cup final and then the 2008 Euroleague Top 16 in just a season-and-a-half with the club. Trifunovic arrived in Vilnius at the start of the 2006-07 season as assistant coach of Zmago Sagadin and was promoted to head coach in February 2007. He also won the 2007 Baltic League crown with L. Rytas. Trifunovic was previously the head coach for Red Star Belgrade in his native Serbia and also worked for the club as assistant coach and team manager.
