ARIS BSA 2003 makes David Blatt head coach
David BlattTwo days after its second coach this season resigned, Aris BSA 2003 has landed another big name for its bench, David Blatt, who arrived in Thessaloniki on Friday afternoon to sign his contract and take command of the Yellows. Blatt arrives to Aris after having led another team, Dynamo Moscow, to the Eurocup Final Eight last season. Blatt won fame as the lead assistant coach when Maccabi Tel Aviv won two Euroleague and one Suproleague title between 2001 and 2005. As head coach since then, Blatt won the 2004-05 FIBA Europe League with Dynamo St Petersburg, the 2005-06 Italian National League, the Italian Super Cup and the 2006-07 Italian National Cup with Benetton Treviso. He also led the national team of Russia to the gold medal at the 2007 European Championships, held in Madrid. Blatt, 51, was born in Boston and played at the Princeton University. He moved to Israel in 1981 to play for Maccabi Haifa, Hapoel Jerusalem, Maccabi Netanya, Elitzur Netanya, Hapoel Galil Elyon, Ironi Naarija and Maccabi Hedera. He retired from playing basketball in 1993 and immediately started his coaching career, which included Hapoel Galil Elyon before he landed at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Blatt replaces Fotis Katsikaris, who resigned after leading Aris to its group title in the Eurocup regular season. Katsikaris had replaced Andrea Mazzon, who left the team after losing in the Euroleague qualifying round last autumn.
