ESTUDIANTES extends coach Casimiro
Luis CasimiroAsefa Estudiantes has reached a new agreement with head coach Luis Casimiro to extend his contract until the end of the 2011-12 season, the club announced Wednesday. Casimiro, age 50, arrived to Estudiantes in summer 2008 and led the team to reach the Spanish League playoffs last season. He has also coached several other elite Spanish teams such as Fuenlabrada, Alicante, Valladolid, Valencia, Caceres, Gijon and Manresa, as well as leading Don Benito and Gandia earlier in his career. Casimiro helped Manresa to win the Spanish League title in 1998, in arguably one of the biggest surprises in competition history. He also made it to the 2002 Saporta Cup final with Valencia and helped Fuenlabrada to promote to the Spanish League in 2005. Last season, Casimiro led Estudiantes to finish seventh in the Spanish League regular season with a 19-15 record, reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2006. "I think that the club has grown a lot in the last two years, getting more stability, with everyone in the club working in the same direction. I am satisfies to feel that my work has helped the club to reach that stability," Casimiro said. "I am happy to have been able to contribute to take a historic, special club like Asefa Estudiantes closer to where it belongs. Estudiantes is a club worth to work for."
